Wow, Murdoch really unintentionally helped out our cause a lot by bringing it onto twitter to blast Obama about it.

Thank you Ryan, the more exposure we can get, the better!

ironic, considering News International haven't made mention of this in any of their media outlets and their emphatic support for this bill.

Mind you, anything he touches turns to effluent currently, so let's hope he continues to try and support it...

I saw it mentioned last night on news.com.au but didn't bother mentioning it as he never said anything directly about the bill, just took a swipe at Google who he seems to think is responsible for sharing pirating links but, like all those who support this bill, are too stupid to realise that it's not Google (or even the file sharing forums) that host the pirated material.

Barking up the wrong tree like always. **** he makes me shamed to be an Australian.

Maybe this has already been mentioned farther up the thread, but I see on Google that Seibertron.com has been confirmed for the Jan. 18th blackout. Thumbs up, Ryan. Everyone I've been talking to about this is apathetic as hell, or tell me they don't see how this applies to them. I guess Jefferson was right: people really do get the government they deserve.

pfft.. stupid government officials. as i said before in the RP Chatterbox, this is just a publicity stunt to make the fatcats fatter, and the working man poorer. Its a stunt to make the lazy corrupt political bastards more money and feel more secure in their pitiful lives because they want to be in control, and that their own families act against them - or rather - the politician's children are telling them to F**K right off.

I'm waving the middle finger here because no one - and I mean NO ONE - has the right or power to tell me what I can look at on the internet, what I can download and what I do in my spare time.

The sheer arrogance of the political structure to think that they are acting in our best interests is a freaking lie!

They should be all taken out and shot - and failing that, they should be removed - by force if neccessary!

this makes me sick...

They do have the right to tell you that you can't illegally download music or videos. While I am a proponent against SOPA and PIPA, I am not an advocate for piracy. That problem must be dealt with, but SOPA, PIPA, and other similar legislation is not the answer.

Actually, I just searched for a list of sites participating in the blackout and saw us on the list. None of the big guys are on it, but it's at 108 sites and growing. I'm hoping our international connections here will make a difference.

whilst what you say is true Seibs, the problem we all have is: whilst the price of stuff keeps rising - the more expensive it gets, the more piracy will keep going. Greed results in piracy as an act of revolution to the expensive prices.

I see your point, but piracy is not something Seibertron.com can ever condone.

This is only about piracy as a secondary issue, badly-thought-out and non-specific legislation such as this is counter productive to the Internet's creativity and freedom as a whole, and demonstrates the far more frightening prospect that those who are in a position to dictate what the Internet can and cant to are not only non-users of the internet, but are actually proud of that fact!

miller-mccune.com, December 29, 2011 wrote:When members of Congress earlier this month considered the Stop Online Piracy Act — better known to anyone who actually hangs out on the Internet as #SOPA — the most notable feature of the debate turned out to be the sheer ignorance of the elected officials discussing it. That is just wrong. A lot has changed in the 2 weeks since, but just this sentence here riles up more people that you can possibly imagine - how can these people litigate for a global resource they have no knowledge of?
Would you let a golf instructor set the rules for a football match?

They clearly underestimated the abilities of the internet but this still needs to go further so, please, link this (or any equivalent) article on every site you visit, be they cosy little forums or huge news aggregates, to be doubly sure they take SOPA seriously help to spread the word.

Apologies if this has been asked already (many, many comments and I'm feeling lazy) but as American politicians are once again looking to screw things up for everyone, is there anything us foreigners can do to help?

EDIT: Just for clarification I meant help to stop this, not help the bureaucrats.

Sadly, not directly.

We can spread the word and do all we can to encourage and show our American friends that their involvement is needed to stop this, and join in with a show of support for those who are doing something about this.

Im a brit living in the UK but I created this article for exactly that reason, this will affect us almost as much as them and if all I can do is spread the word then I'll jolly well do it properly! ;)

Oh fantastic! Always thinking of more imaginative ways to shaft good and honest folk, while murderers and rapists get let out of prison early for "good behaviour". I lack the words to express how tiresome I find the stupidity of the dinosaurs who run our world. I like to think I've got a good understanding of what's right and wrong, but I know sod all about politics. Is this the time I write to my MP and hope they pass my sentiments up the chain? Hopefully if Europe says 'no' then maybe the U.S. will take note, but I doubt it.

I actually just calmed down from a HUGE nerd rage after reading that quote.
This is seriously disappointing, though not surprising, that these bastards think the internet can be taxed, or censored, just because of piracy. And how they are handling this, making it into a sort of joke about how they aren't "nerds" makes me sick. No one has to be a nerd to simply view the internet. I hope a few of these "upstanding and respectable" (I use this in a totally insincere fashion) officials have their young nephew or niece show them just how big of a mistake they're making by showing them all of the backlash on one of the many, many, many websites out there. Twitter may be the best bet for letting it sink in fastest..

As for the issue of piracy, this bill will not prevent what has become a weekend hobby, thanks to the likes of Napster (prior to their shut down and re-launch as a legal download service), from going down easy. Piracy is now very much like a Hydra, you can cut off one head, but two will grow in its place.

There is no sure fire way to kill piracy, but by lowering the price of entertainment, one of the main reasons for the advocation of piracy will be lost, and more people will start to actually BUY instead of just downloading from BitTorrent website XYZ. There is more and more I can say on the issue of piracy, including positive notes about what piracy can teach a person, but this is a discussion about PIPA and SOPA, and their effects.

Clarification is still needed but it looks like SOPA has been shelved (not dropped, but still shelved)!

We cannot stop the pressure even if this is true though. The Senate equivalent, PIPA, is still out there and just becuase we have postponed one form of crazy does not mean we should sit back and let another take it's place. We also can be certain that SOPA will be back in one form or another eventually.

Stll work to do.

Re: SOPA and PIPA: the bills which could end Seibertron.com, your favorite websites, and the Internet!

We cannot stop the pressure even if this is true though. The Senate equivalent, PIPA, is still out there and just becuase we have postponed one form of crazy does not mean we should sit back and let another take it's place. We also can be certain that SOPA will be back in one form or another eventually.

Stll work to do.

Personally, I vote to continue on with the blackout, and I hope the other participating sites do as well. To not do so implies we were not serious in our indignation, and Cantor will pounce on that Iike a cat on a mouse. This is the man who said the Occupy Wall Street movement was made up of "peasants" who needed to get a job. While I didn't see eye to eye with the Occupiers myself, that kind of language suggests to me an elected official who has no intention of representing the concerns of the electorate.

Oh, I most certainly agree, especially as PIPA is still out there so this isn't over yet. Both of these bills have to go away completely, not just be hidden in a box until we're not looking any more.

The decision to continue to join the blackout is for the admin to decide on as more information comes in. Seibertron himself has been instrumental in helping us get this message across and know he is serious about wanting these bills gone too.
