How did Sound wave defeat Megatron in the comics to become leader?

Soundwave? Are you talking about the old Marvel comics from the 80's? If so, it was Shockwave who de-throned Megatron & took over as Decepticon leader. He just beat up Megatron plain & simple. Still, if you are talking about Soundwave, I can't think of an occasion where he tried to disobey Megs............

When TF's were in the initial stages over 20 years ago, Soundwave oringally planned to be the Decepticon leader, until a last minute change to Megatron.

There's even a comic cover showing Optimus and Soundwave locked in a pretty hardcore fight above the Earth.

Soundwave? Pffhhhh....No one would follow an unchrazzamatic bore like him.

I don't have them, but I thought Soundwave was a decepticon leader for while in the UK Marvel comics from the mid 1980s. There was time travel involved, and he was a future leader I think.

Soundwave has lead the Decepticons a number of times in the Marvel comics. I think his first time out was after Megatron was beaten by Ratchet and Prime had beat Shockwave, Soundwave assumed command in their absance and did a pretty good job as he was the Decepticon leader who caused the autobots all kinds of problems during the Dinobot hunt.

He latter handed command back to Shockwave and then brought Megatron and Shockwave together and got them to agree to share the leadership of the Decepticons and try both their approaches and let the results of each decide the eventual leader.

In the Marvel UK time line of the future, after Cyclonus and Scourge became leaders of the Decepticons thanks to Death's Head killing Shockwave, and they in turn were thrown back in time by Death's Head, Soundwave again assumed command of the Decepticons and lead them through the Space Pirates saga and brought the Terrorcons back in time during the events of Time Wars - after which, or should I say during which, he returned to his own time still as leader of the Decepticons.

That doesn't look so much like "Optimus and Soundwave locked in a pretty hardcore fight" so much as it looks like Prime getting pwn'd in the face.
