Summary of IDW's Transformers Regeneration One #80.5

Hey Seibertronians!
Oft-lurker, rare poster here. A buddy of mine in the comics biz was nice enough to get me a copy of this far, FAR earlier than scheduled...my understanding is that vendors tend to receive their shipments of FCBD comics well in advance of the date, as opposed to regular issues. I felt I'd be remiss for not spilling the beans - for those who don't mind being spoiled, of course. Without going word for word, I'll offer a synopsis, but in accordance with policy, won't be posting any scans (if people want proof, I can always show the already seen cover with a 'hello Seibertron from J_D' note or something. But I do ask you just give me the benefit of the doubt. :P )

Mods, if this really shouldn't be discussed yet for whatever reason, feel free to modify and lock the topic. I'll understand.

Without further ado:

The first few pages we've seen already; the Full Circle blurb, Counterpoint title page, and the following two with the repeated 'Witness!" per each panel depicting the spirit forms of Primus v. Unicron, Uni munching a planet, first TFs budding from Cybertron, and Megs taking a shot at Optimus.

Now, then. Page 3 shows us a busy evening in peaceful Iacon, '21 years after Reoccupation* (denoted by an asterisk as the planet-wide regenesis in TF 80). Prosperity and growth mentioned, Cybertronians are seen going about their daily business. Above it all The Last Autobot stands atop a large structure, seemingly acting as a still sentry overlooking the city. One text box describes the era as 'A time to unify, heal...and hope. Moving towards a brighter future envisioned by Primus and now nurtured by the enigmatic Last Autobot. A Utopia...where all are one.' But over in Polyhex, at Fort Scyk...

Page 4: Soundwave is speaking to a small group of Decepticons. I can't name anyone in this crowd apart from Ruckus (who I can only name as he's called by name later in the issue). Virtually all of these folks are definitely from the latter parts of the G1 line, and my memory for names stops shortly after the movie. My bad. :( Anyway, ol' tape-deck discusses how he views Megatron's controversial "Peace through Tyranny" motto as 'simply advocating a more trenchant route to the realization of Primus' dream of universal order'. He states that the conveniently "lost" covenant of Primus has become a license for the Autobots to mold Primus' vision into something that only smothers their true potential. he continues that Megatron understood that cybertronians, above all races, are superior beings, more than capable of shouldering the burden of universal guardianship. "That destiny is still ours! We just have to reach out--- ---and TAKE it!" The Decepticons raise their fists and voice their agreement with a series of "Yes!" cries.

Page 5 & 6: More Witness! recaps. Stretch panels:
-The ark flying through an asteroid belt blasting obstacles
-Megatron, Starscream, a red Frumble *cough*, a blurry seeker in the background, and Buzzsaw invading the Ark.
-The ark crashing
-Op and Megs duking it out among fallen warriors, Megs being on the receiving end of a piece of machinery Op has tossed at his head.

Page 7: Kup & Ultra Magnus on their way to see Prime, who's stationed in a citadel atop a large hill - Kup complains, and Magnus muses that Prime has gone to lengths to make himself distant. They meet up with Hot Rod, who we learn...Prime has elected to mentor. Kup quips 'tough being the chosen one, eh? Prime's expecting them...

Page 8: This is the page Chris Ryall shared on his twitter. Prime opens with a "What do you want?" Looks like he's stressed and weary again.

Long story short, Kup believes the seperatists are now a threat to planetary security, and that there have been incidents believed to be building toward a main strike, something designed to bring Ex-cons back. Kup wants to send in the Wreckers, but Prime says no - that'll draw support for the dissenters. He believes that with the passage of time, whatever threat posed will fade. "Hot Rod will show you out." Yikes, testy today.

Page 9 & 10: Witness!

-Huffer, Bumblebee, Hound and Prowl hung from the ceiling as Shockwave walks below
-The Dinobots going to town on Megatron
-Defensor vs. Bruticus
-Scorponok vs. Fort Max
Underbase-powered Starscream murdering several Autobots (panel's various shades of yellow apart from Screamer, so it's tough to hell who. One seems to be Bumblebee, but he was supposed to be in his Goldbug form at this time IIRC. A Cliffjumper retcon?

Page 11: The Kalis-Baird beaming transmitter. Soundwave's cons perform a sneak attack. Guards are shot, Rucks says it was easy, and a pink, purple and blue chopper (that doesn't seem like Vortex) calls him a blowhard. They're accompanied by a grey and mostly-red stubby plane and a pinkish fire-breathing bug-lizard looking thing, who melts a way in before they shoot everyone.

Page 12: Soundwave walks in, plugs into a terminal, and gets access to the orbital defense network. He gets control of an 'astroid-smasher' and adjusts its position before firing at Cybertron's surface...

Page 13 and 14: Witness!

-Thunderwing with the Matrix of Leadership. It's not called the Creation Matrix here. ;)
-Unicron in 'bot form scooping noms from Cybertron's surface into his mouth
-Prime dying on the floor as Prowl & co. attend him (his faceplate's still on - continuity error! :P)
-The Last Autobot awakened
-Prime kicking Bludgeon in the face

Page 15: Witness! The beginning...

The orbital blast descends and strikes the stationary Last Autobot, destroying him utterly. Montage shot of Soundwave with his fist clenched in victory, and Prime, Magnus, Kup and Hot Rod's horrified reaction.

...of the end.

Last page: A preview for #81: Cover is Megatron sitting on a throne in a ruined setting with red sky. His word bubble:"What kept you?"

Hey guys. That's me on the left. I have large handwriting.

When I read this, each of my heads made progressively louder and aggressive throat-clearing noises in turn.

And here's the last previously seen page...with a snippet of something more! (You guys can remove this at any time, just something extra)I've removed the dialogue save Prime's first, just to show how sassy he is. :D

Seibertron.com member Judge Deliberata managed to obtain his copy of the Free Comic Book Day exclusive Transformers Regeneration One issue 80.5 very very early.

For those that don't know, Transformers Regeneration One is idw's revival and continuation of the old Marvel comics continuity and will continue the story starting with issue #81, 20 years after the events of issue #80 while ignoring the Generation 2 material.

He has posted photographic evidence of the comic, which we provide for your here. He has also posted a summary of the issue, which contains a heavy amount of spoilers, so if you don't want to be spoiled don't continue on after the following images!

...W-Wow.

He states that the conveniently "lost" covenant of Primus has become a license for the Autobots to mold Primus' vision into something that only smothers their true potential.
Covenant of Primus! :-B :-B :-B

a pink, purple and blue chopper (that doesn't seem like Vortex)
Spinister?

a grey and mostly-red stubby plane
Windsweeper?

a pinkish fire-breathing bug-lizard looking thing,
Sparkstalker?

Page 12: Soundwave walks in, plugs into a terminal, and gets access to the orbital defense network. He gets control of an 'astroid-smasher' and adjusts its position before firing at Cybertron's surface...
This "asteroid-smasher" sounds eerily similar to the planetary defenses Furman mentioned in his pseudocanonical "Alignment" story. ;)

This seems awesome, and I've reeeally wanted a continuation... I just hope they don't develop the autobots like War Within.
...but the destruction of the last autobot sparking another conflict seems cool.

So the Last Autobot is the first to fall?

...Wow. Symbolism.

Overall, it does seem to have a very Marvel G1 feel to the story. I'm liking it!

A quick TFwiki check reveals to me that the first and last are definitely the bots we're looking for! Not too sure about Windsweeper, IIRC the bot's chest was grey, V-shaped, and everything else red. There's a bunch of guys in Soundwave's clique, I'll try and describe them later today after work, when I get back home. :)

'Kay.

Looking through the G1 toyline, I can't find much of anyone who'd fit that description. :-?

It probably was Cliffjumper, as his Classics incarnation mentioned at some point (possibly in a bio) that he had been offline after the Underbase.

I was very excited about this when it first became news. I am still looking forward to it, albeit a bit guarded. I will most likely have a stroke if iDW lets Furman write it as he did the Marvel stuff, it's been a long time since I read a good TF comic. I grew up on the G1 comics, as far as I'm concerned, no other continuity compares. Hopefully this will be done right.

Sorry, I have been hiding under a rock. So this series picks up from issue 80 from 20 years ago? So they are reviving the old continuity? And if so how does that mesh with the new continuity?

It doesn't, as far as I know. And I hope it won't. It needs to stand alone, if it lives up to the original.

What new continuity? You mean the one that encompasses WFC, Exodus, Prime, Exiles, Rescue Bots, and FOC?

Simply put, this is a G1 continuity comic, set in a version of the Marvel G1 comic continuity. It's its own entity, being tied to nothing but the Marvel G1 comics. ;)

I'm going to go on a limb and say that our red plane is Windsweeper after all; I think the grey V corresponds to the toy's chest sticker. He's very much in the background.

Soundwave's grunts, in a bit more depth after a 87-88 toy search:

In the first panel of his address, I believe I see Horri-bull - in his original grey and blue colors. Next to him is Crankcase, Spinister, and who I believe to be Needlenose. Next to Needlenose is..someone with a very Onslaught-ish dark green and black color scheme with what looks to be a large barrel on his back, has a mouthpiece and yellow visor. Below him is either Pounce or Wingspan, arms folded, lookin' all moody. :D

Up front, before the superior mixing machine, we have Ruckus...next to someone who is completely green and purple. I want to say Skullcruncher but the legs are completely purple, and the chest and groin are green, with a purple pectoral attachment.

Next panel, SW is standing in front of four bots who are of a mostly green and purple coloration, but lighter (No, not our favorite building team :P)...and one seems to have some form of shiny sphere in his belly. O_o Next to them, off to the right is someone I can't identify for the life of me; grey torso from the little that can be seen of him, red mouthpiece, light blue visor, grey head-top with what is apparently a fin accessory on top.

Welp, that's that! If only these guys had had more than 3 eps on the show back when I was a kid, I might not have been having such trouble! (Only post-86 figures I owned as a kid were Apeface, the Decepticon Sports Car Patrol, and for some reason Roadgrabber...who I think I still have somewhere. :p)

This^^

From what I understand of it, this follows directly on from the old Marvel late G1/early G2 run and won't cross over with any of the other series at all. Must admit, I am really looking forward to seeing this having read the original comic in its UK weekly format from issue 3 onwards as a kid.

So I got around to reading mine too, the story is OK and it really does erase G2 from continuity since nothing is mentioned in the recounting of all of the important events that have taken place thus far.

I won't be collecting it however, the art is too much like the original series, as in horrendous.

Just to confirm the identities of the mystery Decepticons...

'Soundwave's Cabal'

Panel 1:

Front row (L-R) Ruckus, Sparkstalker, Wingspan (or possibly Pounce)
Back row (L-R) Battletrap, Fangry, Spinister, Needlenose, Horri-Bull

Panel 2: No idea, don't recognise any of these. Possibly generics?

'Attack on the Transmitter'

Again, this is Ruckus, Spinister and Needlenose. The 'pinkish fire-breathing bug-lizard looking thing' is definitely Sparkstalker, although oddly he's drawn as walking on all-fours, rather than his usual T-rex style pose. It looks so weird seeing him on all fours, in fact, that at first I thought it was a miscoloured Bristleback.
