Hey guys,

I've just uploaded an article about another gem of a discovery, a Generation 2 hand-painted YELLOW and TURQUOISE Sideswipe mock-up.

Hope you enjoy and discuss plenty!

All the best

Garish.

It's almost like the designers were on a bender during the design phase.

Or, they just had a wheel with different colors and let it spin to pick the next scheme.

That is one ugly piece of TransFormers history, very much bootleggish.

*shakes head* But, thank you for posting it. Your posts of information are a vital boost that this fandom needs. We see rarities and learn things we never knew, all in one fell swoop.

Front paged Maz, and I really love that piece. I hope it is okay that I put a couple of your pics in the article.

I love these rarities! Especially this one!

That's one nice review there, and like many of the G1-G2 early 90's toys, he has a certain panache to him. I quite likes it.

Thanks for the info!

For some reason, he reminds me of those Hot Wheels that can out about the same time as G2 that would change colors when they were exposed to hot or cold water. You could give them two-tone paint designs by sticking part of the car in ice water.

There were Transformers with a similar design function, the Aqua Speeders that were released in the G1-G2 time period.

Maz wrote:...which brings up the rather interesting question of whether or not this G2 sample is actually supposed to be some kind of G2 Sunstreaker? Unlikely as that may be, the Sunstreaker mould having then just recently been re-used for the European gold-boxed Classic release and this sample being extremely close to the G1 Sunstreaker colour scheme, nothing should ever be totally ruled out. We know the Sunstreaker mould has been recently classified as unusable by Hasbro and Takara, and that could well have been a result of its use for the Classic early 90s Sunstreaker releases.

Regardless of exactly what this sample was meant to represent, a repainted G2 Sideswipe, a G2 Sunstreaker or the first step towards colour-changing Transformers, this beautiful specimen remains a hugely significant and historic relic from a time when anything and everything were being considered for Transformers in order to keep the line interesting, innovative and more importantly, alive.

I have to agree with on this. The fact that this could have been intended as G2 Sunstreaker has to be taken into consideration (the paint job sure as heck give you an impression of bright sunlight.) If the early 90's release of the mold was so intergral in said mold's degredation, then making a yellow Sideswipe would be the next logical step. It would also be in line with what they've basically always done, which is to recolor a mold and make it a new character (G1 Skywarp was the first I think, being recolored from Starscream.)
Still a nice find, and it would have gone great on the shelves besides Desert Camo Ramjet and the rainbow Dinobots. :)

amazing...oh, the memories. reminds me of all those G-2 reissues like Jazz and co., and the funky color-scheme is on pat with the time. and i'm also surprised that this toy held up for so long, considering that it's just a mock-up and the paint's not even done properly yet.

i guess late-comers will never really appreciate this beaut.

Intriguing... Sideswipe in Sinnertwin colours. I kinda like it...

Makes sense that he could well have been planned to be the new Sunstreaker, especially if it was the Classics re-release that killed the original mould. Alternatively, maybe this paintjob was actually the original plan for Sideswipe, before they decided on the black...

I appologize for not reading the article. I just checked out the pictures.

I went back and checked out your review and it's excellent. Glad I'm not the only one that thought about that after seeing it.
