What urked me about Gurren Lagann was that, in the beginning of the very first episode, the guy on deck with Simon, was the evolved human version of that little pig-mole, (Guuntah or somthing?) when he used siral energy. Re-watch that scene, its him. I dont get how that beginning part pieces in with the rest of the story. I think his slot as a perminent humanoid-animal character was taken by Viral, and they just said "**** it, turn him into that thing for 30 seconds the thats it!" Odd concept though. maybe it fits into the parrelel works? Those were cool (Exept one...)

At the beginning? I would have to rewatch it to find out what you're talking about. The only part I remember that pig mole thing being humanoid was at the end of the whole thing when he helped fight off the anti-spiral.

Yeah, when he evolved. That exact humanoid form can be sen abourd the Cathedral Terra/Super Galaxy Dai Gurren/Overly Convenient macguffin ship in the very first scene of the very first episode. Its on youtube, itd take you like ten seconds go see.

I watched the episode in question while I was calling you out on it and, much to my surprise, it didn't happen the way you said at all. They don't even tell you how far in to the battle they are until it's a few minutes in. Maybe you need to rewatch the series.

While we're at it, dare to compare Gundam 00. Season 2, episode 17/18; they go from every faction teaming up to prevent orbital debris from demolishing a city, and a major character dying...then the next episode, it's four months later and opens with Celestial Being in a giant battle, destroying an orbital cannon.

Dead Metal wrote:It doesn't just have funny moments, it goes over the top with them, while pointing out the clichés of the genre.

That doesn't strictly denote a parody. Kick-Ass, for instance. It's humorous, yes, it's pokes fun at the clichés of it's genre, yes, it's very over-the-top with them, absolutely, but it's not a parody.

Dead Metal wrote:The whole thing with being so over the top is a common thing with parodies, you take something silly that's very common in a genre or medium and poke fun of it by going utterly insane with it.

So...Dragon Ball Z is a parody, then? Because it's literally just Gurren Lagann without the robots.

Dead Metal wrote:Like the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles originally did, which parodied the dark, gritty and violent comics that where getting popular at the time by letting four Turtles being the ones who dish out all the violence.

Um...no. All kinds of no. That's not what TMNT did. They adapted it to be marketable to kids show, not to make fun of the source material.

Dead Metal wrote:And that's what Gurren Lagann did so great, it poked fun at the genre, included clever references to stuff, but still managed to have it's own story so it can be enjoyed by people not familiar with the genre and the stuff it parodies.

That's exactly what Evangelion did, actually. Everything that series did was a clever rip on something. Giant robot anime, giant robot anime protagonists (You didn't think Shinji was that bitchy by accident, did you?), anime fans, everything. Anno was not a happy camper when he made that series.

BeastProwl wrote:What urked me about Gurren Lagann was that, in the beginning of the very first episode, the guy on deck with Simon, was the evolved human version of that little pig-mole, (Guuntah or somthing?) when he used siral energy. The reason the first five minutes doesn't mesh with the rest of the series is...well, Gainax just kind of forgot. Literally, that was supposed to be a part of something, but as time went on, they ended up doing something else, and now they couldn't tell you what the original ending was supposed to be.

Wigglez wrote:Hmmm... Who f***ing loved Death Note? I did!

Loved Death Note. Loved it. Dealt with clichés of detective and supernatural series? Yep. Went amazingly over-the-top? Yep. Parody? by DM's definition, yep.

Did I ever state that it immediately says that it's the 6th day? No I did not but both it and the previous episode where purposely made to look like they where parts in two different multi-part stories. You can't deny that and that was the whole point of me bringing it up.

Looks like you have to not only re-watch Gurren Lagann but also Gundam 00 Season 2 ep 18 opens with an exposition speech by the Federation President the Celetrial being attack comes later after the exposition which is a few minutes.
So yea, it offers right from the start an explanation for what happened in the 4 months prior to that ep, unlike GLs skip.

Adding to that that Gundam 00 is a serious anime I really don't understand how you intended to make your point of GL not being a parody by bringing in a serious anime?
Apples and oranges Shadowman, apples and oranges.

You do know that parodies parody the serious things of a genre don't you? You don't honestly think that parodies just make stuff up or parody other parodies?

It's not as humours and over the top as Gurren Lagann is with it's clichés, that's where the difference lies.

Well as a matter of fact, Dragonball was originally just a parody of the story "Journey to the West". That's why Son goku is called Son Goku (Monkey King in Japanese), and the whole character rooster with a rich young girl, a bandit/ warrior and a pig.
And Dragonball got so silly that it basically degraded into self-parody by the Cell Saga. Although the series went down that road due to fan reaction wanting it to be more serious and mature.

The answer lies in the bolded part. You know, the original Turtles from the original Mirage comics. You know the old black and white comics the cartoon is based on.

I was never interested in Evangelion so I can't comment on that, but I highly doubt that it's as silly and in your face as Gurren Lagann.

That's fantastic. You're still wrong though. No sense arguing with you, you're clearly dead-set in your poor definition of "parody." It's like talking to a brick wall, except the wall misinterprets storytelling elements and humor while completely ignoring the original intent of the writers to make the series out to be something it isn't.

So they're doing a movie series (Animated, no live-action, I don't think most sane studios would fund that) of Berserk, based around the Golden Age Arc. Which is great because if there's one thing we needed, it's to see all the blood, gore, and rape in HD.

I have some respect for Berserk, in case that all sounded too critical. Still working on the Manga, though.

Typical Shadowman, first you get offended by something, barge in on it, then refuse to let go after everyone it originally concerned walked away from it, insult someone's intelligence, bring up unfounded points and after they've been refuted and you're shown to be wrong you suddenly want it all to end and let it look like the other one is the fool.

Then after a couple of weeks you forget all about it and it all starts anew.

How about the two of you take this to PMs if you want to continue arguing. I dont want my thread locked over some dumb argument between two people who have probably never even met.

So yeah. FUNimation took down dubbed episodes 5 and on of FMA Brotherhood on their youtube page. My guess is that they did it so people will buy the dvds just released.

Yea probably I can't Imagen that they could make nearly enough money from youtube alone.

But it's nice they offer a buy before you try option for their stuff. If only anime DVD prices weren't such rip-offs.

I can still find a way to watch it without buying the dvd or going to netflix. I know I sound cheep but I'm without a job. But there's a quite a list of shows to watch on the internet. Any suggestions on what to watch? I finished watching paranoia agent and I'm in the middle of S-cry-ed and FMA Brotherhood.

Well it's not anime nor is it complete since it was sadly cancelled after it's third season, but the animated Spawn series is really good. So far I like it more than the original comic, due to the writing and characters being better plus Kieth David's voice for Spawn is epic.

Then anime wise there would be The SoulTaker. As far as I remember it's best to watch this one dubbed, otherwise you might miss the action on screen and or what the hell's going on, atlast as far as I remember.

Black Lagoon is also pretty good, English dub will make the most sense though, apparently it's a brilliant dub, plus the characters are all meant to speak English anyway.

The Devil May Cry anime was pretty fun.

but then again you've probably seen all those already.

I remember watching Spawn on netflix (Or something) In a very long one shot episode. Not alot of action I can honestly say I remember. Alot of blah blah blah though...
Thats not always a bad thing, (Metal Gear) but it can be.

Like I said, an anime of MGS wouldnt be a bad thing...

Yea, Spawn is more about the bla bla bla, especially in the comics. I'm currently collecting all the old material in HC form and in those he hasn't done much over the past three or so years (material wise of the old series the HC collect a year's worth of material each) other than cry, over react, brood, get his ass kicked a few times and intimidate bums.

It was fan made, as an intro, using the theme from Lupin the 3rd for crying out loud. It was really well done though.
Also, did you know there is a live action MGS Movie? Its full, and 100 percent fan made, and I never watched the whole thing, but from what I could tell, it was OK.

There was going to be an actual non-fan made live action movie to come out. But it was never actually made. And I read David Hayter, the voice of Snake, was going to direct it also.
Now something back on-topic. GETSUGA TENSHOU!

You know what made Power Rangers so popular in the first place? The complexity of the fight scenes, which no other kids show had ever done before. You know what has an infamously poor range of motion? Anime.

Yeah, I know a ton of anime has really, really good animation, but it just wouldn't work the same way.

I watched the first episode of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. It only goes to show that suicidal depression is funny as hell.

If you could have any mech, out of anything in the world. What mech would you have? I would have Lagann just because it can attach to anything and make it like a body where Lagann fit perfectly like a head

I designed my own gunmen, Daikibatora. I like how everyone got there own personal gunmen with specific abilities. Lagann balongs to Simon. 8) deal with it

Okay I can take that. But I'm not talking about just gunman. Any mech from any series. But If I did had to make my own gunman, It's be a jet that transforms into battle armor. And I'd use the wings as swords. And the controls would be parts that go over my limbs so the mech can follow my exact movements. Kind of like this
