The Dr Who (and spin-offs) Thread *potential spoilers*

Now I know there's a bunch of us DW fans around and with the 2007 season just a few months away it's time to get discussions going!

Plus there was a lovely little tidbit on Outpost Gallifrey that just had to be shared.

Season 1 saw the return of The Daleks.
Season 2 saw the return of The Cybermen.

So which villian is coming back for Season 3? Highlight for spoilers ...

With the popular cult telefantasy series Life on Mars returning for a final time on BBC1 this Tuesday, the Independent on Sunday newspaper have a profile and interview with the lead actor, John Simm, which starts off with the statement:

"Travelling back through the years for hit show 'Life on Mars' has given the actor more fame than he knows how to cope with. But now he reveals to Liz Hoggard a new role that will mean seeing a Doctor."

During the course of the interview the article goes on to seemingly confirm a rumour first raised in the Sun by saying the following:

"Although the BBC is planning a spin-off to Life on Mars - called Ashes to Ashes, set in the 1980s and starring [Philip] Glenister, Simm is bowing out. 'My instinct tells me not to hang around too long.'

"He'd like to do some comedy 'in warm weather - preferably on a beach. I always seem to be doing drama in horrible brick locations.' And for years he's been dying to play a proper villain or a serial killer. The problem is Simm still looks 35 going on 15, but finally he's got the chance: he's just been cast in Dr Who - as the Master, the Doctor's evil nemesis. He'll be quite brilliant, of course, but heaven knows how he'll cope with a whole new horde of obsessive Tardis fans."

Is that true? I saw it a while ago, but it didn't look like confirmation to me.

Probably should be treated as a rumour but it's a villian that really needs to come back, as impossible as it may seem.

I heard about this as well but so far it has only been treated like a rumor.

I don't post there but OG is a damn good site. I've been looking at their episode guides and thinking ours could learn a lot from them.

I have never been there until now, and I have to agree. I think we may want to consider following their setup as best as we can. I would be willing to help.

OG has some damn fine members too. One guy helped me obtain my Genesis Ark set, a cyber leader cyberman, Doctor without trench coat and a Captain Jack figs.. All for retail prices too!!

Of course Whona has been stocking more figures from Character Options and their shipping and service is second to none.

Nope. I went to sign up when Season 2 was airing but they'd disabled new sign ups due to the increased traffic during S2 broadcasts and haven't gotten around to trying since.

I'm trying to stay spoiler-free with Doctor Who, but I think I already know who / what the villain for Series 3 will be. I need to get a bit torrent program or something, so I can watch these episodes not long after they've aired! Plus Torchwood, which no US station has picked up. :?

I'm also a member at OG, but I haven't posted much. I think my SN there is Spike, or Rogue.

I have the full first season of Torchwood and I enjoyed it.

I also have the first Sara Jane Adventures which is really refreshing and a great fun show to watch.

I think the baddies are the Sontarans, looking at the series 3 trailer.

... which implies they're now Rhino people, which makes me sad. :( If the two are the same, however. Might not be.

It's also not impossible to bring back the master- the Doctor brought him back during the time war , and implanted him into a robotic body as a companion. This is the Richard E. Grant series, mind you, which has been retconned. (And it's not known if it WAS the time war, but it's implied in his profile)

Last rumour i heard about the new series of the Dr was that everyones favourite giant fire extinguishers are coming back.

*edit* also i'm looking forward to how the new companion Dr chemistry works mind you she did play a character who died in one of the final episodes of series two before getting the new companion role.

The rhino guys are The Judoon.

And there are serious rumors that the master is returning.

You obviously didn't watch the preview for season 3 at the end of Runaway Bride did you?

It ended with nothing but the Dalek "heart beat" and Sec (oh it's so nice to be able to refer to a Dalek by name other than Davros) staring into the camera.

At which point I'm sure everyone was saying "enough with the Daleks already!"

Don't get me wrong, I know they're popular and all, but the fact that both they and the Time Lords wiped each other out starts to lose meaning when you realize that the Daleks have made four appearances in the show, and are going for Round Five very soon.

Of course, with the rumors that the Master is coming back, maybe the Time Lords aren't all dead, after all.

Yeah i did i was kinda hoping that the Darleks had finally buggered off after the season 2 ending.

it would be a twist to have the Time lords still alive inside a Life pod much like the darleks prison. as for the master was he the bad guy in the late 90's tv movie (i have a bad memory for the bad guys)

Yes. He was also a villain in the original series, played by Roger Delgado (with Pertwee), by Peter Pratt (in Tom Baker's story "The Deadly Assassin"), by Geoffrey Beevers (in Baker's story "The Keeper of Traken") and by Anthony Ainley (from "Logopolis" onwards.)

mmm Roger Delgado and Anthony Ainley. They were both great in the role of The Master.

Looking at a pic of this new guy, and recalling the mess that Eric Roberts did in the movie, I would hope at least the new guy grows a goatee.

Of course i'd still prefer Anthony Stewart Head to get the job, but they used him up as Mr Finch.

Bringing The Master back though ... should be interesting to see how they do it. Given that he's out of regenerations and was sucked into the Eye of Harmony in the movie.

As for The Daleks, I certaintly didn't say "enough with the Daleks already!". Probably because i'm really excited that after all these years we have this new breed of Dalek in Sec and the Cult of Skaro. It's always been about the mindless drones bossed around by Davros or the Emperor Dalek. But now there's Sec who's very much his own Dalek and more of a threat than any Dalek in the last 40 years. So I am looking forward to the Dalek episode(s) but I do hope they (or just Sec) take the centre stage in the season finale like they have the last two seasons.

Yup. That's true. And since he made an appearance in the Series Three trailer, that'll be happening soon.

"You are not alone"

Or would that be too obvious and tacky?

Too obvious BUT it could make for a interesting story of him wanting to track down the other time lords..

Of course he could also say

"The master is alive"
