Is it possible to fix lumpy heads? My Classics UM has an improperly molded head and it bugs me like mad. Can I fix it and if so what can I use?

rod removal

Postby coyotepack » Sun Nov 11, 2007 8:23 pm

I have a grimlock Classics transformer with a defective shoulder: can any one suggest a safe way to remove the metal rods connecting his shoulder to the piece on his body?

I'm a complete newbie and I have a few questions regarding repaints(never done it before, but I wanna try it sometime). I read through the thread and I'm wondering what kind of brush should I use for repaints? How many layers of basecoats do you normally apply and does it completely remove any signs of brushstrokes? How should I practice my painting as I don't want to ruin my toys(they're pretty pricey over here). Lastly how much roughly would it cost to get all the necessary equipment(and what are the necessary equipment)? Thank you for any input in advance.
For every 1000 hits I get from seibertron my sister will buy me a new TF.. Click! Click! Click!

It depends. for large areas, skip the brush and airbrush it. For medium through detailing, use smaller craft brushes. How many layers of basecoats do you normally apply and does it completely remove any signs of brushstrokes? You should apply 2-3 basecoats. Brushstrokes are a matter or how you paint, so just don't smack it down on the plastic.
How should I practice my painting as I don't want to ruin my toys(they're pretty pricey over here). Have any toys are objects you don't need or want? Use those.
Lastly how much roughly would it cost to get all the necessary equipment(and what are the necessary equipment)?
Can't help you there unless I know what country you're in.
Thank you for any input in advance.

My answers are in red.

I don't know bout these testor brand but tamiya is pretty easy to find here.. I might try with that.. Another question, when I want to paint a toy do I have to remove the original paint first? If yes what do I use to do it?

You don't have to remove it, but it is something you can do. To do so, there are lots of options, but many can have consequences, so for a first time, don't try it.

Anyone have fists and landing gear for G1 Thundercracker, Starscream, and Skywarp, and weapons for Thundercracker and Skywarp?

I also need a foot for Alternators Rumble if anyone knows where I can find one.

Hi Guys,

I am planning my first repaint, will start simple with a movie bumblebee. Paint wise i should be okay, so no questions on that. What i would like to know though is where to get those transformers symbols (decals) that i see on some of the repainted/kitbashed models.
I have used search, but that gave no results.

Thanks

OK, here is a tip I found working with Krylon Fusion paint over the Christmas break.

I was repainting movie starscream parts with a base of krylon flat black. Worked great! However, the next day, the rubberized bits on his arms, the fingers and the little drive wheel that makes the cannon spin was all gummy.

It took quite a bit to get all the gummy paint off. The rest of the bot was perfect, it was just those little bits that had an issue.

I've used Krylon Fusion on TFs before with no problems, it's great stuff. But if you have rubber parts be sure to mask those off!

Cheers and Happy New Year!

How do you drive out metal rods? Where can I find some more if needed? I've read through the topic and read all the comments, but most of them seem to be about repainting. I am not so worried about paints at the moment. :?

Anyone know where I could find a pair of Alternators Sideswipe hands? I need them put replace the unmovable hands of my Voyager movie Prime. Also, does anyone know if it's possible to find a pair of hands that have independently moving fingers that might fit? Finding those damn hands is holding me up with the stop motion film im working on

thanks, this is driving me crazy

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend which paint would be the best to repaint the Target exclusive scout class Storm Surge(repaint of Cybertron Shortround) into Seaspray and what shades of yellow and blue to use.

This can be a pain.

There are several methods but this is the general idea.

Many of the metal rods have a "big end" and a "little end", you want to push the little end in, and have the big end pop out.

"But what do I do THAT with?" you may ask. Try a small nail. You may need to get the parts braced up with something (or have a friend brace it against a workbench) leaving your hands free to hold the nail and a small hammer. You're looking to tap out the pin, not smash it out. :-)

If they do not move easily, heating the rod or the plastic with a hair dryer can soften the plastic, allowing the rods to pop out.

If that STILL doesn't work, you can heat the rod itself with a soldering iron, then push it out. Watch out! These pins can get HOT so don't burn yourself!

You can. You can also drill into the shell a bit and recess the magnet or you may be able to put the magnet under the skin, so to speak.

Jin offers a guide for this. Page down to the magna-joints section:

I prefer tamaya paints, but testors Model Master line is great as well.

You can always refer to Jin's site here for some paint tips:
http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotom ... Paint.html

Jin's site offers a lot of good info for the beginning customizer! I check it all the time.

There is also a pretty easy mod for cutting down those goofy monkey arms and affixing them to the feet. It makes him even more like seaspray. There are a couple gatchas to watch out for though. If I redid mine I'd do it a bit differently.

Good luck and happy customizing!
