But it's not what drives the genre. You could list a whole shit load of sci-fi movies that have had romance in them but the Stephanie Meyer sheep will jump up and down claiming that it was her who did it first.
And they'll get shut down twice as fast. It's not that common, though, I've only ever seen one instance like that; some girl wrote in to some website complaining about the depiction of werewolves in The Wolf Man remake, and that it rips off and ruins the werewolves from Twilight. That one, as I recall, ended with public humiliation.
Sci-fi is actually a safe area to set Meyer loose. There's no established rules or mythos so there's nothing for her to ruin. As long as we don't let her anywhere near an established franchise and no, I think Disney and Lucasfilm are smart enough to keep her away from a certain series involving Lightsabers...
