I think it goes like this - Jesus (if you choose to believe he existed) was a humble man who didn't believe in material posessions and distributed his wealth and helped the poor whenever he could. He would give his sermons in crowded marketplaces or wherever was necessary, and would stand in and amongst his people.
Then a bunch of greedy Italians decided to honour this by building huge, ornate and gaudy cathedrals, stockpiling gold and money, making everyone attend church and give them more money, so they could give their pontiff a hat made out of gold. The vatican has its own government, police force and an inestimatable amount of wealth. But it's ok because they occasionally throw loaves of bread at AIDS sufferers. Jesus would be proud.
