No, it's fine. This is about all things Sailor Moon in general.

The most recent topic of discussion has been the new manga release by Kodansha and the half-baked job they did at translating it.

Considering I've never owned any version of it (either the original Japanese or the original English translation), I'd rather have this than nothing at all.

But that's just me. I'm obviously not as hung up about it as Sabrblade is (no offense, dude), though I do understand where he is coming from.

I'm still buying it (wanting to own it in some physical form), but it really ought to have been given better treatment, since Kodansha has done so to some of their other less-nostalgic titles. That's the big issue with these. Kodansha knew these would be a big seller solely because the Sailor Moon name is a nostalgic moneymaker, and so they didn't bother to give it the quality that it deserves knowing it would sell well regardless of how well they translated it.

Tokyopop. More like Tokyopoop.

Kodansha's current releases are in most ways better than what Tokyopop did, but at the same time, they are also worse in some ways than what Tokyopop did.

Thus far,they've released the following:

All of which are mostly better than the Tokyopop version, but still pretty subpar in the translation department.

Would it really kill them to at least make the teenagers talk like teenagers (instead of like posh upperclass aristocrats)? And to do enough research to get all the names and attacks right? :BANG_HEAD:

What Kodansha does have going for them is that unlike Tokyopop they provide Translator Notes, giving insight on Japanese culture and whatnot, not to mention explanation behind the more trickier translations, which I always appreciate.

I'm currently enjoying the new translations, and my wife does too. Room for improvement, yes, but it has potential.

They got most right, but some still stand out as wrong. "Spark Ring Wide Pressure", "Hyperspatial Sphere Generate", "Prince Demande", "Malefic Black Crystal", "deVleene", "Bro", "Phantom Ace", "Princess Beryl Queen of the Dark Kingdom", "Lurga", "Demos", to name a few.

Yes, the artwork, the presentation, the story, the format, the intent of sticking to the Japanese version, all of that is superb and excellent. Though, to me, that's but the icing on the cake.

The actual translation script itself, is poor, with such weird phrases as "It's Bro!" and "Live more nervously!", among many others.

Not to mention such a use of honorifics that is so overly excessive that it looked abusive. "Usagi-chan's kitty-chan," and "Princess-sama," being notble offenders.

And everything reads just very stifled. The girls all speak like posh aristocrats instead of teenagers. Usagi says, "Oh honestly! Forcing a delicate young lady to stand in the hall!" and she's supposed to be a carefree, happy-go-lucky fourteen year old, not Queen Elizabeth. It would have sounded worlds better for it to have been instead written something like, "Aw man! Making a sweet girl like me stand in the hall!" And this kind of upperclass speech happens everywhere.

The translation is so accurate that it's TOO accurate. It's too literal and feels like a real rush job.

Watch these for some really good and really well thought out reviews of these books (though, I disagree with his liking of them being called "Sailor Guardians").

Full review of SM Volume 1

Full review of SV Volume 1

He hasn't put up any video reviews for any later volumes, but he has reviewed both second volumes fully on his site.

Full review of SM Volume 2

Full review of SV volume 2

Also, manga mistakes page 1, page 2, page 3.

Really read what he says and listen. The last thing these books need are blind praise.

I'm not saying, "Don't support Sailor Moon,", but rather "Don't support a company's shoddy, unjust treatment of Sailor Moon."

It deserves far better than what it's got thus and Kodansha fails to realize that, seemingly having no intentions of improving in later volumes.

Kodansha's releases may be the only option to own physical copies of it in English, but they are not the only option to simply read it in English, period.

The few years I got my computer was dedicated to Sailor Moon. I have all of the manga, in french. I even bought fansub DVDs of the animated series and the live action series. Finally, I downloaded a few fansubs of some musicals.

Why I love this old show so much? It's sexy, funny, and entertaining to the max. Now, if we could have a crossover between Transformers, Sailor Moon, and My Little Pony Friendship is Magic...

Sailor Moon's back! Again.

NEW Sailor Moon anime series coming in 2013!

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-07-06/sailor-moon-manga-gets-new-anime-in-summer-2013

Image

The idol group Momoiro Clover Z, publisher Kodansha, and creator Naoko Takeuchi announced on Friday that a new anime adaptation of Takeuchi's Sailor Moon manga is being produced. The new anime series is aimed for release next summer, and Momoiro Clover Z will perform a theme song.

Momoiro Clover Z made the announcement during a live event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the manga. Momoiro Clover Z sang the first Sailor Moon anime's theme song "Moonlight Densetsu" at the event via a live video feed from France, where they are guests of Japan Expo.

Update: More background information added. Although Kotono Mitsuishi and Tohru Furuya, the voices of Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino and Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru Chiba in the first Sailor Moon anime, were present at the live event, the event did not specify that they will reprise their roles in the new series. The event also did not specify which song Momoiro Clover Z will perform as a theme song of the new anime.

Update 2: Kodansha editor Fumio Osano confirmed that the new anime project is not a film project. [Via Tadashi Sudo]

Update 3: Osano also emphasized that no details have been set for a hypothetical broadcast. However, the staff intends to release the new anime worldwide simultaneously. Source: Oricon

Update 4: During the event, Mitsuishi mused aloud if she will appear in the new anime. In a blog post after the event, she said that she is eager to play a role in it. Thanks, Ford Prefect.

Why are you doubting this? There was a whole big event in which they announced this and everything! Naoko Teakeuchi, Kotono Mitsuishi, and Tooru Furuya were all there! The latter two are REPRISING THEIR ROLES AS USAGI AND MAMORU!!!

Also, this just in! According to a post form Kotono's personal blog, not only is she reprising her role, but she says that they enemies this time will not be the Dark Kingdom.

...Um, wait, what? That doesn't make any sense! How can this anime remake be more closer to the manga if it doesn't have the Dark Kingdom as the enemies? :???: :???: :???:

I apologize for the "no Dark Kingdom" confusion. I was going off an incomplete translation that others in the SM fandom were making assumptions based on.

A more correct translation reveals that Kotono is talking about how she's excited to be playing her role in the new show, but that her own enemies this time are not the Dark Kingdom, but her reckless past self. By this, Kotono is speaking metaphorically, in that she wonders if she can top her previous performance as Usagi from 20 years ago. Therefore, Kotono is going to be competing, in a sense, with her younger self's performance from the 1992 anime, as she tries to do better in the 2013 anime. ;)

Anyway, here's a raw version stream of the 20th anniversary live event, during which said new anime series was announced at. The video originates from Niconico, but has been ripped and uploaded to YouTube thanks to Sailor Moon translation website, Miss Dream.

At some point, Miss Dream are going to provide a fansubbed version to give us the full details of what's being said by the people at this event. But, until then, here's the raw, unsubbed video.

Happy 20th Anniversary Sailor Moon! A Live Event from Tokyo and Paris: A Special Report

July 10, 2012 – Last Friday, a special event was held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon. As the U.S. publisher of Sailor Moon, Kodansha Comics is pleased to provide a complete report of the event and the special announcements made there.

On July 6, 2012, at 7:30pm in Nicofarre in Roppongi, a district in Tokyo, the Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Special Event welcomed back the voices of Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon, Kotono Mitsuishi, and Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask's Toru Furuya in conversation with Fumio Osano, the editor for Naoko Takeuchi's magical girl classic hit.

After 20 years, their reunion revealed a few secrets behind the anime, such as a never-before-mentioned trip to a hot springs resort, and why the anime and manga began so close together. Mitsuishi also confessed that she worked very hard as Sailor Moon because she was her first main character role.

Simultaneously in at Japan Expo in Paris, Momoiro Clover Z took the J.E. Live stage. They appeared in Sailor Moon costumes and performed the anime's opening song 'Moonlight Legend' to original choreography. It was live-streamed worldwide.

After the performance, Shiori Tamai, a member of Momoiro Clover Z, announced the production of a new Sailor Moon anime series. A storm of applause rose from the audience. Kanako Momota, the leader of Momoiro Clover Z, also announced that they would sing the new theme song. Momota commented that they would do their best in order to deliver their voices to everyone around the world. As they wrapped up, Momota asked if she could strike Sailor Moon's famous pose with Mitsuishi quoting Sailor Moon's battle cry, and ended the sensational evening with Sailor Moon's famous line, "In the name of the moon, I shall punish you!"

In Nicofarre, praise and cheers for the renowned voice actors and Momoiro Clover Z, as well as astonishment at the new announcement, lit the live monitor before Takeuchi-sensei herself gave her thoughts about the new Sailor Moon anime to end Sailor Moon's 20th Anniversary Event.

Along with the announcement of a new anime, the Sailor Moon Project stated that a new 10-volume collector's edition of the manga will be released monthly in Japan beginning in October. These new volumes will be faithful reproductions of the stories, including color pages and special pages in celebration of the 20th anniversary. A collector's version Codename: Sailor V will be released as well.

A memorial DVD collection of the original Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon anime will also be released. Each volume will highlight on a different character in the series which aired from 1992 to 1997. One volume per guardian will be released monthly beginning in October 2012 in Japan.

The new anime series is stated to debut in Japan in the summer of 2013.
