Isn't there a few characters who share a weakness to bullets

I'm off to a comic book evening on Saturday, never heard of the series but I'm willing to give it a shot in order to socialise. The comic is lady meckana (not sure on spelling)

I've been out of comics since shortly after Civil War series came out. I didn't like how they portrade several characters, which to me I thought was extremely out of character, plus my wife and I were planning our wedding and I need to save money for a honeymoon. Comics is an easy expense to cut.

So that was about eight years ago. Since then the only title I even made an attempt to fully keep up on was all new X-Men when it came out. I was shocked to discover just how much it happened and transpired in those titles alone. To say I'm way behind and I have no clue what's going on in comics today is an understatement. DC has become such a mess I'm not even going to attempt to figure out what's going on there.

When I was a kid growing up back in the 80s, comic book stores were all over the place then too. The characters however always seem to remain the same. Now days it seems like every different writer that comes on a title has a different take on the different characters, and it just seems impossible to follow.

Yeah, but this is supposed to be a big scary unstoppable killing machine almost invulnerable to physical attacks. But if you shoot and or electrocute it, it dies?
That's like making Batman, but without his toys.

True, can't say I was never bothered about the ultimate universe. Much preferred the 616 verse. Especially the symbiotes. That was thanks to the 90s animated spidey series.

Yeah, always preferred the 616 too, symbiotes being my favorite concept in comics to be honest.
But I did enjoy my time with Ultimate Spider-Man, because I was experiencing the birth and establishment of something new and somewhat fresh, sure some of it pissed me off (Venom, Mysterio, and a few other changes to things I considered classics), usually I shrugged it off because this was supposed to be a more modern and mature approach and a lot of the original stuff is pretty silly when you look at it.
But further thinking about it, the Ultimate Universe is actually less mature and serious than the original. Killer Shrike for instance, just a more violent version of the Vulture if you really look at him, and what was the much improved more realistic Ultimate version like? He was a gigantic steroids abusing idiot who was so crazy that he foamed from the mouth.
Scorpion is Danny Trejo as Wolverine, with blades attached to a chain, alla Kratos and the leader of a gang.

Ultimate Marvel is a fun little distraction from the Classic comics, but not really something to write home about.

So 11 issues in I've finally enjoyed, and am looking forward to the next issue of All-New Ghost Rider.

Only took Johnny Blaze to turn up but hey, if it gets the book moving along then I can't complain.

Of course, once it gets good, the book ends up cancelled.

Yeah, that's the curse of Ghost Rider, they go give it a new hoast, bring Johnny back when it doesn't sell enough, then cancel it and make Johnny the Rider again. Give him a new series and cancel that after a while too, rinse and repeat.

Johnny's still the rider, this is just a new spirit and a new host who drives a car instead of riding a bike.

Oh, a new host and a car? Wow how lame.
I thought it was just another filler host. But that's even lamer. The whole appeal was always the burning skeleton on a bike aspect.

Yeah, but the way Marvel's going now you've either got to have a version of an existing hero that is either a different race, a different sex, or a teenager.

I'm just waiting for a teenage female Mexican Carnage to really spice things up.

Its...better than anything John Romita Jr. can do. But definitely no where near the awesomeness of Rob Liefeld.

Well, he's a creepy lunatic , and it may actually be him whose responsible for the identity. In almost every story he's been in, starting with his return after being torn in half by Sentry, he's been refering to it as female.
"Hey babe, you cheating on me? No, it's OK, I'm not mad, you're my sexy lady." "Ah, that'S the stuff girl!"
And since both he and the symbiote are basically one organism now, with both bringing each other back from death just by rejoining, I guess the symbiote's OK with being female now.

Then again, most of these stories are written by people who think he's a redneck, so ... yeah.

You shut up Burn, JR JR is a good artist!

I have to agree with burn Jr Jr is nothing like his dad, there is just something about his style that I don't agree with. Or maybe it was just how big a deal that DC were trying to make about getting him for Superman.

Say what you want, but I cringe every time I see he's the artist.

It's this particular pose/perspective that he uses way too often (we'll call it "The Charge")

Yeah, he has tropes he uses faaar too often (the "charge" being one of my least favorite things he does), but he still pulls of great stuff, and overall I do like his work. What I like about his style is that it's stylized to the point that there can be loads of different creative body types and character designs in the same picture without looking totally out of place, while being just realistic enough to not look completely ridicules.

But that said, some of the more recent stuff looks pretty bad. I'm still talking of his time on Spider-Man back in the day - before One More Day chased me off.

Image

Image

It's just sometime in the 90s or even the late 80s he worked on his own unique style, to differentiate himself from his father, (seriously, his old artwork just looked like it was his dad doing it) he became successful with that and developed it further. Plus his inker gave him the final hard style we know today, forgot the inker's name though ...

And I still think his Hulk looks horrible.

I guess what I like about him is that he's one of the few modern day artists who work under the old school train of thought, who try to neither be too cartoony or photo-realistic and instead try to have their own style that's still convincing.

Anyone read Darth Vader #1 by Marvel?

Comixology is currently having a buy 1 get 1 free sale on Marvel, so I got comics I wanted anyway and got that as a way of exploiting the sale.

As an essentially free comic it was good, but I have to say it'S not really worth the almost 5 dollars they're charging for it.

I have a couple of problems with it, mostly those that are inherent with comics like this, the kind that'S based on movies and tries to tell events that happened during that time.

To get one semi unimportant problem out of the way, Boba Fett. The comic once again tries to establish Boba Fett as a super professional badass. He even says that the only way he'll fail is if Darth Vader pays him to fail. He even has a new black Wooky sidekick, who I believe will die before the story is over.

OK, on to the more important problems. It feels pointless. That's it really, just kinda pointless. The issue opens with Darth Vader breaking into Jabba's palace, by killing two guards, and then telling a third to bring him to Jabba - or else!
Then Jabba and Vader threaten each other, pointing out that Vader is a day early, implying that they have a sort of business meeting scheduled. Both threaten each other some more, Vader wins the dick measuring by choking Jabba, he then mentions that he has private matters to discuss.
Then the comic cuts to "two days ago".
Here we meet up with Vader getting scolded by Palpy for letting the Rebels blow up the Death Star, and telling him that from now on he'll answer to that guy from VI, you know the one he force chokes after he questions the Force, Palpy says that Choky is the only man with any kind of sense and foresight and that this just proves that Vader is unfit to give commands.
Palpy then meets this cyborg guy and tells Vader to f++k off, because this is grown up talk, and he should go meet Jabba for him, after all that should wake fuzzy feelings of nostalgia for him to return home.
Vader does as he's told, is passive aggressive towards his subordinates.
Then he meets up with Boba Fett, tells him to go get Luke and friends, but without harming them. Black Chewy is sent off to get Palpy's Cyborg friend, so Vader can talk to him, because he doesn't like it when Palpy keeps secrets from him. Cyborg guy can miss a few limbs if Black Chewy wants, as long as he's able to talk.
Then he dismisses Boba and Black Chewy while standing in a settlement of now dead Sandpeople, also the settlement is on fire, while stating that he's finished all the business he had on the planet.

The really, really big thing throughout the comic is that it just seems so pointless, and flawed. This is trying to show us what happened after the end of VI from Vader's point of view and what he did. But it just seems to uninteresting. Vader seems like a brat in this, a brat without authority. It kinda diminishes his badass level he had in the original movies, because when we saw him in those, he just barked commands and or cooked people left and right. Plus he had that awesome voice, which we sadly don't get in this comic.

The art is fantastic though, and the comic's highlight, it's perfect, everything just looks like the original movies, even down to the faces. On top of that it doesn't fall into uncanny valley like many comics that try to look like this, the characters not only look like the actual people, but they also show emotion and natural facial expressions, even Jabba emotes in this.

Vader does kick some major ass, in the beginning when he single-handedly ruins all of Jabba's guys, it's just that the rest kinda undermines all of this and makes him look less badass.

Overall, it's not interesting enough to warrant the high price or keep me reading Star Wars comics.

I gave this a chance even-though I never had an interest in SW comics, and it proved my reservations correct.

His art wasn't like that, well not as crummy as that when his dad inked his pencils or Dan Green did the finishes.

Check his old Amazing Spiderman work in the 80s.

Anyone here a fan of George Perez and Jerry Ordway? Loved the former's work on Teen Titans and the latter on JSA and Infinity Incorporated and Crisis on Infinite Earths. Perez is detailed cram panels and pleasing to the eye female renders while Ordway is, simple yet also smoking hot details.

Byrne, he's Kirbyesque on steroids. And Terry Austin is one uber inker. Only who comes close imho would be Ordway, Art Adams, John Romita Sr., Akin and Garvey, Bob Layton and Scott Williams.

FRank Miller in the early 70s had a detailed style until he switched to the scratchy styx style that McFarlane also adapted. Real good especially on Venom.

Arthur Adam's work on Longshot was okay but his New Mutants Special Edition with Terry Austin floored me!
