Theories on Megatron: Do parts make the bot?

Been gone awhile, came back and found TF4 announced. There was much drinking of caffeinated beverages to celebrate and when my brain's wired on caffeine I start to come up with theories on things. I present to you one of the more sane theories that I came up with.
So, we all know Megatron went from nigh unstoppable in Transformers to strong-but-beatable in RotF to a complete pushover in DotM. We also know that between each film he went through major repairs, having lost a good chunk of his body parts each time. That got me thinking:
Do the parts in a bot determine his strength, much like genetics would for organic life?
Let's be more specific and compare Optimus and Megatron between each films, and were they got their repair parts:
TF: Optimus and Megatron have all their original parts. Megatron is significantly stronger than Optimus.
RotF: Megatron is repaired with parts from a rank and file Constructicon. He's weaker than Optimus, but still stronger than other Decepticons. Optimus then gets repaired with Jetfire's parts and becomes greater in power than the Fallen, even if temporarily.
DotM: Megatron is repaired with what amounts to whatever junk is laying around and some nuclear fuel from a reactor. He appears to be sickly and barely functional, and is easily pushed around by Sentinel Prime. Later he dies from an attack that even RotF Megatron could have dodged. Optimus is able to equip Jetfire's parts as a temporary super mode. When in this mode he's capable of flight and can rip apart close to fifteen Decepticons with little effort.
When you think about it, the power creep/power seep between Megatron and Optimus makes perfect sense when you look at the source of their repair parts.
Note: This is entirely fanwank that made sense to me at the time due to high caffeine-to-blood ratio in my veins.
Discuss.
