I find hat Starscream and most of the movie figs just plain ugly, but I've picked up a few of them after the fact at a discount and I've been very impressed with their engineering. I've heard such good things about these SS, I'd give them a try and I really don't like the look of movie Starscream.

I have tried them all and while its interesting to see how many different ways the engineers found to convert that jet into a similar looking robot, the only one that really blows me away is the leader (with the DOTM deluxe coming in second). But he was never redeco'd as any other seeker, so does that count as a seeker mold? I didnt think so. I highly recomend the leader to anyone who wants a great experience transforming a toy. It is literally a masterpiece.

By the way I find the Hasbro deco better.

I must be the only one that didn't care for the Voyager Cybertron Starscream mold... I had the Dirge, and it was fine but I dunno. Something about it was just unspectacular. Maybe the transformation? I think the transformation was boring.

Energon Starscream is the bees knees! I think he really belongs on this list. He's just a way better design than Classics, and borrows some great engineering from that Dreadwing/Smokescreen 2-pack.

I'm also a huge fan of the Generations Armada Starscream mold. He's a little dude, but oh-so-much fun.

Interesting, it seems we have different definitions of what makes a seeker mold. Maybe I could ask it for the poscast. I was under the impression that for a mold to be a seeker mold, it had to be redeco'd into other characters (hence the homage to the G1 idea/ruse). But Energon Starscream was never redeco'd into someone else right? So I wasnt sure that counted. Just like Leader Starcream doesnt count. I mean if he did, someone would have brought him up already, unless everyone preffers the voyager mold (which would baffle me). Food for thought.

Your explanation is interesting; that's probably how it started out. But in modern times I think seekers are a better defined grouping of characters, and new characters who are designated as seekers are often called out as such.

In TF: Prime, Starscream once mentioned he was the leader of a seeker squadron or some such think, and Dreadwing and Skyquake weren't called out in the same way.

But that's just my understanding; I can't say definitively that that's how it works. But my personal criteria is that if you are Starscream or a Starscream repaint (or retool - gotta include the coneheads!), you're a seeker.

I've always thought that the seekers were the name of Starscream's troops who were always fliers and traditional shared the same design/mold. Probably more out of convenience than anything else.

I think Will pointed this out and what I found digging around the internet is that the term "seeker" is basically a fan name gone official.

With that all that in mind, I wouldn't have thought of Prime's Dreadwing and Skyquake as seekers, but Starscream is second in command and commands all the fliers. So part of me just lumps all Decepticon fliers as seekers.

I think that we are just used to seeing seekers as traditionally being Starscream clones.

Equally interesting :) And yes Starscream is a seeker commander, we know it from the blurb on Dreadwing's box:

For too long, DREADWING has lived in the shadow of STARSCREAM, but with the Seeker commander out of favor, he is more than happy to step into his rightful place at the right hand of MEGATRON. His power and intelligence have always been dangerous, but with the DECEPTICON legion at his command, the very survival of the AUTOBOTS is in question.

But that means that if he is under Starscream and Starscream is the seeker commander, then Dreadwing is part of those seeker forces. Which would make sense since he and his brother are the epitome of the old school seeker definition, being the exact same toy/animation model in different colours. I dont know how much merrit you give to this, but he is listed as part of the seeker sub group in his wiki bio sheet.

carytheone wrote:I think that we are just used to seeing seekers as traditionally being Starscream clones.

Yes, which is why I had found it so interesting that in the Prime show, the decepticon flier clones were not the starscream mold but the Skyquake mold instead. It was an interesting twist on an established formula. Kind of like how in Transfomrers Animated, the highest ranked Autobot was not Optimus Prime but Ultra Magnus instead.

So Megatronus knowing this now, and knowing that we both share the same opinion on that Dreadwing mold, does this list now work better for you?

Oh and Cary, I dont know if you have that cyberverse toy, but it is also awesome!

I think voyager is the perfect size for the seekers, deluxe is just way too small. Starscream should be taller than bumblebee and around the same height as Optimus.

Sorry, TF Prime be damned, but Dreadwing and Skyquake, as well as others like Blitzwing, Terradive, Black Shadow... those guys will always be the "Other Flyers" while the true Seekers are the characters in the G1 cartoon.

Rule of the Seeker Toy

At least three members of the core Seeker group (the original six from the first years of G1) must have a toy and share that mold

So, you can always throw in some riff-raff (acid storm, slipstream, etc) but you must have the core "critical mass" to effect that this toy and characters is part of the Seeker collective.

By the way, the little ol' classics mold really is timeless.

Indeed, for me to be a TRUE SEEKER mold, the main trio of Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp had to be made in it.

So ironically, no Cybertron molds can qualify.

Cybertron technically has 2 molds that can be considered seekers. The Starscream cybertronian mold, and the more earth based Jet mold used by Thundercracker and Skywarp.

The Voyager Cybertronian mold got repainted into Dirge and used Thrust like colors for Habsro's Starscream release, and into Jetfire colors for Shattered glass Starscream.

The other mold as mentioned got Skywarp and Thundercracker
Image

and later as Wal-Mart Exclusive Transformers Movie Divebomb in a yellow and brown color scheme.

The problem with that mold, was its robot mode. It was terrible. and the excessively long cannon arm did not help one bit.

Seriously?

That's Takara's Original MP-03 Starscream. It was given a more realistic paint scheme for its first release.
