Ok, piping up for this one...

1. Hot Rod. Probably the toy I wanted most as a child. And I got him for what I'm guessing was my 6th or 7th birthday. Even after I broke him, he remained my favourite. I named my first pet after him - yes, my porn star name would be 'Hot' Rod Gilbert...

2. Galvatron. Got him unexpectedly one christmas, which was a nice surprise. Gotta be one of the best articulated G1 toys. And as my main exposure to Transformers fiction growing up was the comic, he was even the right colours. And my reissue shouts randomly in japanese.

3. Menasor. I remember spending all my christmas money on the giftset, and was not disappointed. And what's not to love about a team of sports cars with psychological issues led by a violent bully that combine to form a giant, uncontrollable robot with arguments raging in his head.

1) Metroplex: a great Transformers base who wasn't a partformer didn't turn into a Zoids.
2) Ultra Magnus
3) Bruticus

Metroplex came top for having moving arms.

I'll vote for Metroplex too; for obvious reasons.

In no particular order:
Optimus
Megatron
Soundwave

All others were repaints of other characters, or just terrible interpretations.

1984 is done, we're at 1986 now ;) .

Also, voting in no particular order is going to screw up the points system.

So, when will 1986 close and 1987 start?

So guess who forgot about this thread until just now?

1986: The results

3rd Place: Ultra Magnus (16 Points)

If Ultra Magnus were to be released today he would be an armored suit for Prime and he would be called ULTRA ARMOR OPTIMUS PRIME. But he was released in 1986 where you could have a white version of Prime running around in a battlesuit and pretend it was a totally different guy. And then later you could have a cartoon where Prime got turned while himself, because Sunbow are giant trolls.

2nd Place: Metroplex (18 Points)

Metroplex (known in Japan as Metroflex, or more precisely as Super Happy BattleCity Metroflex, and known in the US as Metroplex) was the first Transformer who could turn into a city, complete with repair bay, helipad, garage and financial district. Also you can use the Aerialbots or Protectobots as novelty kneepads for him.

1st Place: Predaking (26 Points)

For kids in the 80s Predaking was the first hint of how ludicrously huge Transformers would get, unless you were a kid in Europe where he never got released due to Hasbro's long-standing memory of the time France described America as "chunky". Predaking was composed of five guys, each of which was as big as a big guy and so his combined total size was roughly the size of a San Francisco apartment.

Image
Pictured: roughly $1800 a month, plus utilities.

Predaking's components consisted of three predators, a prey, and whatever the hell a rhino is (does anything prey on a rhino? And if so, how? Also, why?) who were teamed up rather than eating each other. They were in bright colors and had simple features and transformations so of course everyone hates them. I kid! They each cost as much as an average mail-order bride. Then they combine into the mighty Predaking who is roughly as wide as he is tall and roughly as tall as he is awesome. In the cartoon he could demolish anyone who wasn't called Sky Lynx and in the comics he could demolish anyone except whoever had a newer toy on the shelf.

He was very heavily armed, wielding a sword that was, compared to him, roughly the size of a cheese grater; he also had a huge arm cannon and (I am not kidding here) grenade-launchers in his toes. Even though he must have spent half his time making craters and then falling into them that's still pretty damn imposing. Also he has spikey fists, because a metal fist the size of a Forever 21 isn't terrifying enough on its own.

This toy got rereleased in the 2000's, and then again in 2010 as Predabling, a version where the yellow was replaced with gold, the orange was replaced with diamonds, the red was replaced with a visually identical but more expensive shade of red and the black was replaced with black because black is always awesome.

1987 Nominations

Well let's pretend this isn't going to be a one horse race. 1987 saw yet more combiner teams come out. More importantly it was the year that introduced the Headmasters (namely: Highbrow, Hardhead, Lustriouslocks, Falseteeth and Bumchin) and the Targetmasters (note: not Target exclusives). It also introduced both factions' respective hilariously oversized cityformers.

Oh, and the Throttlebots! Heh.

My vote goes to Fort Max by default. To this day, the biggest Transformers toy by leaps and bounds. A double headmaster, three modes, who cares if his only articulation is in his arms?

1987... Back then I hated the way things were going with Transformers (elegant real life alt modes were out: primary colored chunky blocks were in). Nowadays, I reckon 1987 to be the best year ever for Transformers... What a selection!
Anyhow, this is my top 3:

1. Scorponok
2. Snapdragon
3. Sixshot

Yay!
The voting is rolling again!

1987 then...
OK, my #1 is:

Sixshot
Come on: 6 modes, all of them awesome in their own way. Yeah, he's basically a statue in bot mode, but he's still awesome!

#2
Punch / Counterpunch
A reverse triplechanger, with 2 bot modes? How cool is that?

#3
Fortress Maximus
Yeah, FortMax just has to be here. He's a chunky brick, but he's one of the biggest toys EVER!

1. Fort Max - He's like 2 feet tall. Isn't that enough?
2. Scorponok - You can't go wrong with evil purple green and orange scorpion cities.
3. Doublecross - He was into dragon heads for hands before everyone started doing it.

So... back to 1987, huh? :D

Alright.

Personally, I like these most:

1. Hardhead - he's one big, chunky hunk o' chunk with guns! No talk, just shoot. One of the few G1s still on my wishlist.

2. Sixshot - six modes, all cool, and even a beast mode? Sold.

3. FortMax - even if I never get enough money to buy a house I might still be able to afford this toy so I could live inside.

We're doing them year by year. We're giving our Top 3 for 1987, you don't need to give us the other 25 years until they're announced.

Kind of surprised Fort Max isn't romping home with this one so far...though hopefully there are still more votes to come.

'87 eh?

My number one would have to be Sixshot for sure!

The number two spot has to go to my favorite beast-mode combiner, Abominus, because I can't choose just one of his components!

And number three goes to Computron, because I loves me some high tech gestalts.

Honorable mention to Highbrow, easily one of my favorite headmaster designs.
