The movies fall into an all flash, no substance category for me. It's as if, they don't really count. My complaint, is that as long as the movies continue the way they are going, it will always be a joke, summer action flick with no merit for story telling or character development. These movies will not impact another generation like previous iterations of transformers have. Why? because every movie now has jaw dropping special effects, 3d features and T & A. They are not special or exceptional in any way.

The G1 cartoon wasn't that special either, but people are still enamored with it. So enamored in fact that it's practically a weird obsession. It was a 30 minute toy commercial and nothing more. No great character development, no deep stories, just a bunch of robots looking cool so kids would cry and scream for their parents to buy the toys. And you know what? We loved it anyway.

Well, I hear what you are saying. And it's not incorrect. But compare some G1 characters. They had character. Slap stick, trope filled characters I'll be it. Examples:
Cosmo - sweet heart Russian
Tracks - arrogant aristocrat
Sunstreaker - vain pretty boy
BumbleBee - devoted sidekick

And these characters were not the major ones, well Bee was, but not like he is now.

You can fit a personality trait to so many characters from G1 and Beast Wars inwhich the description needs only a few words. The movies do not have enough time to develop more than 3 Characters, Prime, BumbleBee and Starscream. I mean, what was the deal with the 3 Arcee Twins?

What kind of personality did Jolt have? Or any of the dozens of nameless, non consequential charcters in the movies. It is a different environment. Saturday morning cartoons don't mean anything to children these days, the times have changed. A movie every 2 - 3 years cannot capture an audience like a weekend tradition.

Also, as a result of the times, Transformers are no longer the revolution they once were. Transforming action figures have existed forever in the lives of many collectors. The 80's ushered in a marvel of design and execution that had not been witnessed by western markets. Now it's nothing new. All major big-budget films enact stunning visuals, but it's common place. Even Dark of the Moon's daunting accomplishments in complexity are lost on most average movie goers, because it is now expected.

I think this is the longest post I've ever written, and I am not trying to simply bash on the movies or fans. If Revenge of the Fallen had been a 20 or so, 30 minute weekly series, I think it would have been much better. But in order to squeeze SO much (nearly 30 years of crudely hacked canon) into such a short time, ruins the ability to tell a good story.

Please people, don't think less of me. This is only my opinion and I just want another Generation of fans to be enamored with this franchise as I was. As many of us are.

I've Bay bashed in the past and no doubt I will again in the future. But all I have to say is, please, please get a new writing staff. Keep the aesthetics of the bayverse, keep the explosions, keep everything the way Michael Bay wants it.

Just please give us a decent story.

I noticed the same damn thing while I've been watching G1 the past few weeks. At least the movies try to have a story.
Why do people who make an argument for or against the movie always fall back on G1? That's not the only Transformers story out there. There have been WAAAAAAY better tellings of the story since G1. If writers and directors are only going off of G1 then they'll never do it justice.

Being cold and menacing is one thing, but to me he really does not have the "calculating" aspect. Up until Unicron shorted him at the end of the season he just acted like a power mad lunatic. Maybe I'm just too enthralled by the Megatron in the comics.

Because that's what the people complaining the loudest always want "Moar Geewun!!" "Make the robots look like they're made of bland detail-less cardboard boxes like in Geewun!" "Use the exact same 1980's vehicles from Geewun, even though you never see on the road anymore" They've got their nostalgia goggles on so tight it's cutting off the blood flow to their brains. I know the movies have their flaws, but making it "moar Geewun!" is only going to make it worse. More character development and less human shenanigans, that's fine, I welcome it. Making the bots look like they were designed by a 5 year old and giving them outdated alt modes? Terrible ideas.

The people who cannot even come up with good arguments do irritate me. But it's getting to a point that the people who defend the movies mention it more often than we do.

I always personally thought it made more sense that Cybertronians used their alt-mode parts as armor. I just think that the outright buglike appearance they used in the Bay films was a little overboard. Optimus' design in the movies is about where I'd like everyone in a realistic film to be, with the exception is his faec. I believe they should have something a little more humanoid covering their terminator face.
Image
I mean why not? It's not as if them having a face or teeth in the first place makes any sense.

Also, to be fair, several of the Autobots have car modes based on concept cars. Those shouldn't be all that common on the road either. In fact, depending on where you live, you should see old cars more commonly than anything else. It's not like flat-nose trucks have completely disappeared. And in the case of characters like Bumblebee, his alt mode doesn't even reflect his character or name sake. They could have chosen any modern compact car if they wanted to.

There you go. Theres how it can be G1 and still kick ass. Just look to the comics. And ya, I don't think I've seen a concept sting ray like sideswipe on the road, but I have seen lots of lamborghinis that could be red OOOHHH right i forgot, this is also a long car commercial to sell american sponsored cars. pft

If they atleast looked like the models from TF Prime, that would be a fair and excellent comprimise imo.

Could someone please explain what the difference between re-imagining and re-boot is?

If anyone has watched the extras disc in the Dotm 3d Blu-ray Bay mentions himself that he will do another TF movie after a break to do some other things. And right at the end before the credits on the extras disc roll 'to be continued' pops up! After Dotm making the most money out of the 3 Bay is hardly gonna hand over the money printing machine to somebody else.

I grew up on G1 (I'm 31) and really dig the Movieverse art/design style as I could never have imagined what a photo realistic transformer could look like. Ok maybe some designs are abit too busy, but trying to recreate the G1 style would be silly like power rangers.

I think Bay came back because he finally got the go ahead with Paramount for 'Pain and Gain' and in exchange for Paramount. He decided to come back to the franchise otherwise we're probably talking about a true reboot. There are also rumblings about Transformers 4 and 5 being back to back.

With the 3 year layoff between 3 and 4. Hopefully that allows everyone to go back to the drawing board with a film that had a nice fun balance which is what I believe the 2007 movie was only to be followed up by the uneven mess that was ROTF and the kind of abrupt DOTM.

Regardless of whats done. I still expect some form of human lead to be the catalyst for the surrounding story. Whether that be Shia or Josh and Tyrese having the film built around them or someone like Statham or Dwayne Johnson.

Shia makes the most sense considering he has had the backing of Spielberg for quite some time and Shia's career outside of Transformers is a bit muddled. So I suppose they could talk him back into it. He claims money is not an issue as he has said 'he has enough money to live 50 life times' or some nonsense like that.

Regarding the female. I'd like to see Megan come back in all honesty for the following reasons.

1. She was stiff but not as obviously stiff as Rosie was
2. She is hotter than Rosie
3. Continuity even though as continuity goes, she meant **** all in that department but still offered more in two films than Rosie and her pep talk with Megatron in DOTM

Though given the PR **** storm that followed ROTF and the pre production of DOTM thanks in part to Megan. Megan would likely have to bang old Steve to get back on board the franchise.

I'm not saying that there are real car counterparts for every vehicle mode transformer, i'm saying why NOT use the ones that really DO have real car counterparts when they always have. Either way, I really don't care if its not the exact same car... but bee is WAY off in regards to his usual tiny car look... Jazz got downgraded from a porshe to a crappy pontiac solstice (crappy enough compared to the porsche).I would have loved to see Starscream find some jet hangar and scan a F-15. It would have looked so sick to see a clearly inferior jet (to the F-22) surprise everyone by pwning and then transforming to bot mode and then back to jet instead of the OBVIOUS choice of being the best of the best of the current fighter craft. Megatron can mass shift to be a gun, but whatever, I don't mind the tank/jet modes. But I prefer the WFC mode WAAAY more than the mass of metal crap on treads from the movie.

The movie aesthetic really didn't do anything for me other than make each TF look pretty much the same as the other except for the first movie which atleast had some distinction between all of them. The movie toys make better onscreen models since they atleast look more cohesive.

The TF Prime look, as I said, nails it, as its still crazy articulate, but still armoured and closed-forming (I don't know how else to describe it)

Also, im not trying to be agro about any of this, just nerdly back and forths is all i intend.

I know, sokay man, i was just bein sarcastic, and actually for the most part i agree with you; i would have liked to see jazz ore with the better car mode and i personally think megatrons vehicle modes sucked until dotm. And yes, big thumbs up on the prime nailing it, i think it combines most of the good things the franchise has been over the years, it still has that cinematic feel while believably being a cartoon, the bots are neither blocky nor a big tangle of mechanics, i really like it

I don't know why so many think that TF is such a joke. I'm going to tell you guys something. The people that saw TF in a bad light, or thought of them as a joke, always will. The people that make fun of you or give you weird looks for wearing your TF shirt always will. If you think that giving the bots more character development or writers coming up with a better story is going to change that, your sadly mistaken. If anything, these movies have made it a bit more acceptable to the average person. But the people that are going to hate, always will. No additional character development is going to change that.

Personally, i had no problems with the story telling, or character development. You need to remember that this is a 2 hour movie, not a season long series. While i admit I too would have liked to see more character development, not every character can be in the spot light. Characters in G1 and nearly every other TF series had just that.. An entire season of character development.

GetRightRobot wrote: These movies will not impact another generation like previous iterations of transformers have. Why? because every movie now has jaw dropping special effects, 3d features and T & A. They are not special or exceptional in any way.

Says who? My nephews absolutely love the movies, and the they (the movies) are directly responsible for them getting into TF. Sorry, but the audience today expect explosions, good spacial effects in their story. Like it or not, you could have the best story ever written, but if it doesn't have the effect and explosions to back it up, the audience is going to get bored. And I've said it before, and I'll say it again. TF has never been known for there stand out story telling. Yes, there are some good examples out there, but there's alot more bad examples than good ones.

Your right, you should see more old cars than fancy concepts and shiny cool sports cars and whatnot. But lets be honest.. what would you rather see on screen? Or should we say what would the average movie goer see? A red minivan, or lifted blacked out Top Kick truck? A minivan with a red beacon, or a custom Hummer H2 rescue vehicle? And while yes...They could have just given bumble Bee any compact car alt mode, there's no car on the planet that could hav given the wow factor that the 2010 camaro concept did when it was first seen on screen. I saw the first movie in theaters 3 times and all three times people cheered and clapped. People want flash.

Using the same alt modes as the 80's wasn't going to work. A fresh take was needed, and that means new alt modes. They could have used a flat nosed semi, but is that really a big deal that Optimus is a long nose Peterbuilt?

Batman seemed to have been brought out of being a joke (to the general batman movie watchers) to being this awesome character that pretty much everyone who has seen the movie appreciates in a more legitimate way. And to answer your question, I would love to see a red van chasing down a decepticon (who is now the obviously way cooler ride) with miniguns transforming out of it. And then have that same red van suddenly turn into this badass robot that actually offers somthing new, where people can go, woo (I have to stop rhyming :BOOM: ) thats a sweet ass van. And if your gonna argue vans aren't cool...

A-team.

The pickup truck isn't bad though... its just that nothing would have made me think Ironhide, watching the movie, other than the fact that they named him ironhide. If anything, I would have thought trailbreaker.

But see, i haven't ran into anyone that conciders Optimus, Bumble bee, or Transformers in genral a joke. Tf's are "cool" again. But like i said, the people that make fun of you (or me for that matter) for wearing Tf shirt, collecting the toys etc, are always going to hate. Same with the batman crowd. Many (the general audience) liked Nolan's Batman. But those haters are going to hate too. To them, your just a wierd comic book nerd and no oscar winning performance is going to change their minds.

You would, cause your a G1 fan and can appreaciate the back ground of the character. Most however won't. And while I do like G1, The Topkick is by far a better alt mode. Sorry. It just is. And yes, your right. The A-team van is bad ass. But that's not a fair comparison. The A-team van is iconic. Everyone knows the A-team van when they see it.
But to be honest, i think the topkick fits Ironhide better than a red minivan ever could.

Ya, I'll give you that. The Topkick would have made an awesome alt mode for Trailbreaker. Now that i think about it, i guess they could have made ironhide a red Econoline 4x4 sportmobile van. Thats about they only thing that might have fit his personality while still resembling his G1 alt.

hehe, in regards to being made fun of for being a tf fan or wearing the apparel.. or having a decepticon tattoo for that matter, i've always gotten nothing but compliments from people who reckognize, or chicks that dig the tat. I guess it helps that i'm not :-B lookin.

the one time i was ever annoyed by someone who reckognized my tf apparel; The guy mentioned how the Decepticons got their asses handed to them... coz all he had seen was the movie. True story.

Well then there you go. It seems that the majority of people you have ran don't see Tf in a bad light, nor do they think there a "joke". ;)

I wasn't suggesting they use all 80s alt modes either, something a little more faithful would suffice. It would also help if they got more than half of the characters colors right, there's no good excuse for that. And Bumblebee isn't meant to exist for his "wow factor" in case you've completely forgotten. Besides, if you need a car to be the "wow factor" of a movie about giant transforming robots, then I think you need your priorities straightened out.

Also screw GMC. Go Ford Mustang!

Products sell my friend. That was true in the 80's cartoon and its still true today. No, the Camaro wasn't the only wow factor of the movie. For me the biggest "wow" factors was when Blackout and Optimus first transformered. But you can't get on someone for liking that one of the most anticipated cars of the last 10yrs is included in a movie about TF robots.
As far as colors go, thats more prefferance. For me it didn't make a differance concidering there colors have been changed thoughout nearly all TF series. (with the biggest exception being optimusHe's always been red and blue from what i can remember). Some wouldn't have worked at all (starscreams G1 colors wouldn't have worked on any modern aircraft).
Ya, some of the alt modes could have been simular to G1 i guess (i would have preffered Jazz to be a Porche than a solstice), but when a major car comapny comes in a helps foot the bill, its hard to turn that down. politics yes, but it always has been since 84'.
but your right. I've always been a Mustang fan first, but had to admit it was cool to see the new Camaro on screen in 07', and though i still preffer Ford's, they did a pretty good job with the Camaro. ;)

Can't think of a better argument, so you chose to pick on the few characters which were particularly ridiculous.

Nah, I'm pretty sure most fans can come to the conclusion that megs would be a tank. Why? Because he's been one before. Actually, I'd even be cool with an attack chopper.

Ultra Magnus was an 86 movie character, none of their alt modes were real because they were from an alternate future where nobody was disguised anymore. No need to argue for or against any of those.

Also this.

Cars don't sell movies, movies sell cars. Which is another thing that irritates me about people in general. People go out and buy expensive cars because they were in a movie and they were cool. Then they end up with a truckload of debt because they dropped more cash than sensible on something that's meant to get them from point A to point B, but that's going into a whole different world of BS, so I'll stop there.

It would help if they didn't outright choose grey and black for the majority of the characters. One of the biggest complaints against the films is how hard it is to distinguish anyone.

I'm pretty sure Bay pockets most of that extra cash. He should be getting plenty of funding from Paramount and I've seen other movies which do not smother us with product placement pull of effects as good as his. I just find it weird that his films make it feel like GMC is the only car company in the world.

Transformers 4 - Reboot or Not?

It would seem the Movie Trilogy might truly be getting a reboot. With the vague references and loose vocabulary that implies a series reset, new comments from Josh Duhamel seem to reinforce the reboot position.

Josh Duhamel wrote:"I don't think anybody's doing it," Josh Duhamel told us last night at the launch party for Sony PlayStation's new PS Vita portable entertainment system. "I know Shia [LaBoeuf]'s not doing it. I don't think Tyrese or Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] or anybody else is doing it."

Obviously the next installment of the mega-successful Transformers Movie series is set for a June 2014 release. That leaves a lot of time for things to change. This early into the process, nothing is guaranteed. Duhamel added:

"Whenever these movies make that much money they're going to make as many as they can," he said. "[But] I haven't heard anything about it. They haven't called me."

Ofcourse, this video from ClevverMovies youtube channel states that the movie WILL be a straight up sequel, but not told through the eyes of Shia LeBeouf's character, Sam Witwicky. So new cast, same story? Again, this far out from production, with no story or scripts written, anything can change. These are preliminary reports.

Ha!

I might slag off a lot of things in the movies, but Duhamel isn't one of them. Granted if it is a reboot, it'd make little sense for him to be in it, but he and his soldier boys were the best GI Joes we've gotten in a Hasbro film so far.
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
