Transformers: Age of Extinction at CinemaCon - Plot Point Revealed

Paramount was at CinemaCon today showing off their upcoming summer movie lineup, and naturally Transformers: Age of Extinction was front and center. You'll remember that last week we reported that both Nicola Peltz (Tessa Yeager) and Jack Reynor (Shane Dyson) would be on hand to receive their 2014 Cinemacon Rising Star Awards. But that's not all we also have a bit of mildly spoiler-ish info from the footage that was shown courtesy of the IMDbLive Twitter feed, see below:

Info courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter:

Paramount: Monday, 6:30 p.m.
Paramount will be teasing several of its big summer movies, including Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction, which will star Mark Wahlberg. The studio will also preview the live-action/CG pic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Brett Ratner-helmed Hercules. The presentation should feature plenty of talent, including Wahlberg of Transformers, Will Arnett for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Dwayne Johnson for Hercules. Christopher Nolan (who is participating in a panel at the convention) should make an appearance to tout his highly anticipated film Interstellar, which hits theaters in November.

We've known for a while that one of the plot points for Transformers: Age of Extinction would be humans reverse engineering Transformer tech and building their own mechs. According to the tweet Optimus Prime will take on one of these human controlled mechs known as an "Avatron".

I gotta wonder if "Avatron" might just be The Hollywood Reporter mishearing Galvatron's name.

I'd hope not, though.

I bet it's right. We've seen Megatron's head during the filming, so it's probably safe to say they've been studying it along with all the rest of the Transformers remains. It's like a combination of avatar and Megatron = Avatron

Apparently that was Galvatron controlled by a human. Here's a description of footage from CinemaCon, courtesy of ComingSoon:

ComingSoon wrote:Next up was Transformers: Age of Extinction, which was presented by Mark Wahlberg--Michael Bay was a last minute no-show this year--who also introduced his younger co-stars Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor. Wahlberg talked briefly about joining the movie but also proclaimed that it was going to be "bigger and better than the other three combined" as well as the biggest movie of 2014. (Sorry, "Mockingjay"!)

Instead of just showing the most recent trailer, Bay had put together a good chunk of footage from the movie, maybe 12 to 15 minutes, similar to what he did with the original Transformers seven years ago. It gave us a much clearer picture of the characters and the general story while still leaving a good number of questions open.

The footage began with a shot of a dinosaur (very Tree of Life) and a bunch of sweeping establishing shots of mountains and fields as well as showing a sign saying "Remember Chicago" as homage to those who died in the battle of Chicago from Transformers: Dark of the Moon. We then see a number of alien spaceships invading a city and a battle between them and the Autobots, and then the footage cuts to a boat being boarded by a group of military men looking for something and Walhberg's character racing a jeep towards the scene. Stanley Tucci's character appears randomly and without any sort of introduction is complaining about the decision to hide in a glass room.

After those seemingly rather random scenes, the exhibitors in attendance were shown a nice chunk of footage from the opening of the movie, setting up the three main characters played by Wahlberg, Peltz and Reynor as the former's character Cade Yeager is bringing an old beaten-up truck back to the farm where he's greeted by Wahlberg's daughter Tessa (Nicola Peltz) and his partner Lucas (T.J. Miller) and they immediately get into an argument about him buying the truck, because money has clearly been tight for the Yeagers in recent years. But not quite as tight as Tessa's shorts, and this being Michael Bay, we do get a lot of gratuitous ass shots showing them off. Cade hopes that he can "flip" the truck for parts and sell it off, but a short while later, when he gives the truck some juice, we hear the unmistakable voice of Optimus Prime saying "Calling All Autobots."

We then see four SUV's holding federal agents driving through the fields towards the Yeager farm and in the lead is James Savoy, a tough agent who confronts Cade and the others. He's told by Kelsey Grammer's character over an earpiece to "work on the girl" so he pushes Tessa over, but before they can get too far in getting information, Optimus busts out of the barn and says "Here I am" and starts firing at the agents as the entire place literally explodes as Cade tries to escape with Tessa and Lucas. They're saved by the arrival of some sort of dune buggy being driven by Reynor's character Shane, who we learn (at the same time as Tessa's dad) is her boyfriend.

From there, we cut to a point shortly after that as their escape attempt is halted in the middle of a vacant stretch of road by a battle between Optimus and Galvatron, who seems to be controlled by someone at the command of Stanley Tucci's character. The fight is pretty heated as the humans try to hide behind cars but then suddenly Optimus is hit square in the chest by a missile and he falls to the ground. We then see the giant spacecraft hovering over the fields and out comes the menacing Lockdown, whose face transformers into a rocket launcher that sends another missile to take Optimus down on top of the car in which Tessa is in. (Tucci in the control room tells the person controlling Galvatron to get him out of there.) Lockdown then motions to the larger spacecraft that releases a smaller ship (probably another Transformer) with which the robot merges, before approaching Galvatron and the car under which Tessa is trapped, dropping a net over both and scooping them up. Cade and Shane run over to save her, Wahlberg doing an impressive leap into the air to grab onto the net before falling back to the ground once it gets too high.

These scenes were followed by a couple of bursts of footage, some from the earlier trailer and Super Bowl spot but also including more of Lockdown's giant spacecraft hovering over the city, a brief bit from a fight between Optimus Prime and Grimlock as well as Savoy chasing Cade across the fire escapes of Hong Kong. Throughout the footage, we see quite a few glimpses of Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer's characters, as they seem to be playing the government types who have declared that the "Age of Transformers is over."

The footage ended with a funny scene of Wahlberg in a piece of a spaceship crashing down into a street and a guy in the car that gets damaged by the crash comes out and yelling at him about insurance. Wahlberg completely goes off on him, even heading back into the wreckage to look for an alien gun to shoot him with.

The amount of footage shown was quite overwhelming, but it succeeded on quite a few levels, firstly in establishing the relationship between Wahlberg as an overprotective father to Peltz's teen daughter. Showing this particular footage shows that Bay is going back to the basics of the original Transformers and making sure to focus on establishing the humans before getting too far into the world of battling robots. The footage also showed off a number of impressive set pieces that should be on par with the previous movies including one where Wahlberg, Reynor and Bumblebee are hanging from large swinging power cables that are draped over a tall building.

I know it's still kind of early but does anybody else feel like this Transformers movie script is crap thus far? I don't think they have the cast in this one that can save a dreadful story.

What script? That quote from ComingSoon.net is just a summary of the jumbled scenes shown in the 12-15 minute preview presented at this event. It's not a faithful representation of the exact sequence of events that will follow in the film.

IGN and ComingSoon have posted break downs of the Transformers: Age of Extinction footage shown at CinemaCon yesterday evening. As you can imagine this information is somewhat spoiler-ish, so proceed at your own risk if you're trying to avoid such material. Their full writes up can be found by clicking here and here, we've got the bullet points below:

  • Stand Alone Film: Wahlberg says this film is much from the past three and can really stand alone.
  • Even Darker Optimus Pime: When government agents led by Savoy (Titus Welliver) arrive at the Yeager farm to apprehend Optimus Prime he opens fire on them. They describe Prime as more desperate and vulnerable than in previous films.
  • Lockdonw - Bounty Hunter and Trophy Hunter: Lockdown seems to be heavily influenced by his Animated persona. In addition to being a bounty hunter he also collects parts from his prey to upgrade himself. They describe him as a old western style gunslinger in robot form.
  • Government Transformers: As we already knew the government has been working on their own Transformers. Stanley Tucci's character Joshua appears to be the lead scientist with a grudge against the Transformers. Kelsey Grammar's character Harold Attinger is the head of the government group hunting the Transformers still on planet. He is in control of Galvatron, which is speculated to be Megatron rebuilt by the government. The human controlled Transformers are apparently referred to as Avatrons.
  • Dinobots: Oddly not a lot of Dinobot information. They mention an actual dinosaur is shown in "Tree of Life" type moment. IGN mentions that Grimlock is present during the confrontation between Optimus Prime, the government agents, and Lockdown, which seems a little off timeline, an error on their part perhaps?

Bleh. Saw the whole human-controlled Galvatron thing. It would be awesome if he somehow broke free from their control and just whooped them all.

I meant from what we've seen so far of the story. From previous spoilers and reveals of the past movies we were able to get a pretty good tone from what was going to be going on, particularly in Dark of the Moon with the whole race to the moon thing. So far what we've seen just seems kind of lame. Of course I reserve judgement until the movie is out and I've seen it but the anticipation is not high for me on this one.

looks like another paint by numbers bay movie but at least lockdowns personality sounds right, to bad he looks terrible. I can already see how this movie is going to pan out, the humans send galvatron after prime but prime kicks his ass, lockdown comes out of nowhere (possibly a herald of unicron kinda like silver surfer) and takes down prime, galvatron breaks the control teams up with lockdown then they either "kill" prime & leave him for dead or they get distracted by fighting humans and prime escapes, prime winds up in japan gets super powers & dinobots returns to kill lockdown chop off galvagrons head & destroy the human controled TFs, then if unicron is in the movie prime sacrifices himself to stop him. There you go now just add in a bunch of mindless human drama & dialog and you have age of extinction. i just saved you $20 & 2 hours of your time, your welcome.

In the interview video, Mark Whalberg states that he'll be giving too much information if he explains the quote "The Rules Have Changed." Obviously if you have watched the other three movies, the government and N.E.S.T. protected the Autobots and their identities. Now that they have copied their technology, humans are now allowed to kill at will.

I don't mind hearing that Optimus may once again come off a little dark. It makes sense. Even in ROTF and DOTM, it made sense that Optimus can be a killing machine. Surely he's not the leader of an entire army solely based upon his belief in freedom being right of all sentient beings. And now humanity has turned against him after he nearly died saving Earth. If I were Optimus, I'd be pretty damn mad too.

Yeah but at the end of the day, Prime has always been the wise one that supported the individual needs of his Autobot brothers. Sure, there are battles and wars that he experienced, but because he is Optimus Prime, he still can be an inspiration to those around him, rather than saying stupid **** like "We will kill them all." That is just so out of character. If I were Cullen, I would have refused to say that line and some others. He's a hero BECAUSE he doesn't resort to saying or doing the stupid ****. Whether the Matrix of Leadership helps offer that serenity to him, I don't know. But, there are things that Optimus Prime would say, even in a hopeless situation. Some of his lines in these **** movies, no way in hell would one of the most iconic and fatherly figures in pop culture, Optimus Effing Prime, say them.

You want dark and angst? Watch Batman or something.

And the Machination of IDW did the same even earlier, only they also integrated the Headmaster concept into it. ;)

It seems like the movies start with some very cool core character ideas - The Fallen, Devastator, Sentinel Prime, the Dreads - but out of those the only one who was anything other than a walking toy was sentinel prime.

So help me god, if there is not more than 5 minutes of combined dialogue from the actual transformers in this movie I will buy the toys and create my own stop motion you tube video recreation of how the movie should have gone.

I am very excited for the dinobots and especially lockdown. I like the idea of galvatron as a rebuilt megatron, if that's how it ends up. But will there be any reason behind the dinobots? Will lockdown be sneaky and cocky, will he interact with his prey at all??

the sheer randomness of characters like the wreckers, devastator, shockwave, the twins has totally annoyed me. C'mon Bay, let's have the transformers talk this time around!!

That is just so out of character.

Batman doesn't kill. Optimus does.

Yeah, somehow I don't think he's under human control when he rips that car in half.

Besides, I'm sure if Lockdown is a true Decepticon, he's probably pretty pissed that his dear leader was murdered, and he'll do anything to bring him back if he can. The humans have inadvertently done most of that work for him by building a new functioning body that is more powerful than Megatron's original form. I assume that if the government has possession of Megatron, that means they have probably kept his disembodied spark, so you can do the math.
Please note: If you think I may be joking, I probably am.

Not unless the spark was extinguished.

And from the sound of things, Galvatron is remote controlled by a human operator like how Nemesis Prime was controlled by Silas in TF: Prime.
