Was kinda hoping for some Megatron gameplay. :-(

Watching Bruticus and the G1 Optimus skin in action made me 10x even happier that I preordered the game for my birthday! Can't wait for them to raise the level cap tomorrow as well.
They call me “Tanker Chungus”!

So next game on Earth maybe?

The G1 cartoon could use a retro-fit, been trying to watch them… so many of the episodes are soooooo bad :-( Storytelling in animated series has thankfully stepped up since the '80s.

Transformers: Battle For Earth would be a great name, if only for the acronym… ;)

Grimlock's very presence there, not to mention a TON of other things from both this game and WFC, is a blatant contradiction to the G1 cartoon.

The don't go straight to Earth after the events of this game. They go planet-hopping on a long, space-faring journey instead.

So Brawl has a stationary weapons platform mode. Neat.

And finally, a mode in an animated feature(within a game, but still) that actually looks like an intermediate mode.

Seeing a G1 skin Optimus sporting a shockwave-ish gun-arm looks wierd to me. Gimme some hand held chrome rifles and shoulder mounted rocket launchers!

I don't see HM going that route (I guess it's more realistic to have arms that turn into guns)

Yeah, I really wanna try replicating that with his toy, but have yet to figure out how.

Same goes for Vortex's Jet Mode. Best I can get is reattaching his swords pointing outward like wings and aligning his rotors into two blades (instead of four) pointing straight.

I cannot wait for this game to come out! The more I see, the more I love!

That being said, this demo video showed that there at going to be 13 levels in the campaign. I know that we are seeing a little behind the scenes, (at least before you unlock each level) but I wanted to share the characters/levels that I saw and see if anybody else noticed anything else.

Here's what I saw regarding the playable character for the corresponding chapter:

Chapter 1 - Bumblebee
Chapter 2 - Optimus
Chapter 3 - ?
Chapter 4 - Cliffjumper
Chapter 5 - Jazz
Chapter 6 - Vortex
Chapter 7 - Swindle
Chapter 8 - Bruticus
Chapter 9 - ?
Chapter 10 - Megatron
Chapter 11 - Starscream
Chapter 12 - Grimlock!
Chapter 13 - ?

Also, does anybody know if they are more than one playable character during a single chapter? After playing the Vortex demo, I could see taking control of Blastoff during another part of the chapter to complete a different goal to help Vortex. Anyway, just a theory and this helps pass the time until the game is released!

I hope that isn't the first time we get to play as Grimlock in the game. I'm sure a lot of people are gonna be bummed if they have to wait until so late in the game to play as him.

I'm guessing it's one playable character from start to finish per level.

With Vortex, I think it's best to wait for either a new mold or a (much more likely) 3rd-party upgrade for him. But with Brawl... the forward platform legs look a lot like his actual robot legs(at least from just one watch-through of it), so considering that the toy's turret is rotatable, it's probably more possible for Brawl to achieve his 3rd mode without an add-on.

Thing is, the back-end boosters of his tank mode remain in the back of his weapon platform mode, so his robot legs would have to be swung forward far enough to stick out form the front end somehow.

I'd try this out myself, but my Combaticons are put away right now so I can't get to them.

Im thinking the last level may be a multipart fight simply because look at Bumblebees demo level.

The Nemesis takes out the Ark as its making for a jump point. Both ships get locked together and dont seem able to change course while Prime and Megatron have their epic fight below deck somewhere.

Now admittedly there are a few moments with Ratchet that makes it feel like this is a 'heres how the controls work' bit and i suppose they could be using a flash forward but this to me SCREAMS the scenario that brings the G1 formers to earth. Now again, i KNOW this isnt G1 but the setup is there.

Gonna be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Thing is, the reason it looks like the G1 cartoon scene with the Cons fro mthe Nemesis baording the Ark is because the Bumblebee level was indeed inspired by that scene. But, once the two ships make it through the space bridge in the game, neither winds up on Earth. They won't reach Earth for a VERY long time.

I've always thought that the best Transformers game would be the one that tailored each level to one or two specific characters and their abilities instead of a generic level for whoever happened to be on the game's rosta. WFC made a start and FoC is expanding on it.

I was wondering how long it would take for you to chime in on that one. It took longer than I thought. Perhaps I should have said 'this is G1 universe.'

His actual words were:
"...often one of the big questions I get is 'what's the continuity of this game to other properties?' We are frankly, I'd say most close to G1 cartoon as possible- that's our primary touchstone. And then we'll on occasion look to the PRIME series for some visual kind of DNA pieces..."
I'd say this was open to a bit of interpretation as to his exact meaning but ultimately (with the characters, personalities and events of the games) the Cybertron games are more G1 than anything else, especially given G1 exists beyond the 80's cartoon. It's probably even more G1 than the supposedly "aligned" continuity.

Sabrblade wrote:Grimlock's very presence there, not to mention a TON of other things from both this game and WFC, is a blatant contradiction to the G1 cartoon.

Being "heavily inspired by G1" is not the same thing as "being G1". They took several bits and pieces from G1 and incorporated them into these games. Doesn't make them a G1 continuity, though.

Especially when all official sources that explicitly spell out the games' continuity without any vagueness say it's Aligned. That's the whole meaning of the word "aligned" anyway. These games took elements of G1 and "aligned" them into these games' continuity. The whole Aligned continuity itself is VERY heavily based on G1, with elements of other series mixed in at other points in the timeline:
  • Era of Primus/Unicron/Thirteen - based on Marvel G1, Dreamwave G1, the Fun Pub fiction, and ROTF
  • The Age of Wrath - based on the G1 cartoon
  • The Golden Age - based the G1 cartoon and the Cybertron cartoon
  • pre-War Caste system era - based on IDW G1 (Megatron Origin, specifically), Armada, and the Movie comics
  • Great War (WFC) - based on the G1 cartoon and the Movie comics
  • Great Exodus (FOC) - based on IDW G1, the G1 cartoon, and some new stuff (made to align it with Prime)
  • Planet-hopping journey - based on the Cybertron cartoon, the Movies, and some bits of G1
  • Unknown number of eons occur
  • Present day of Prime and Rescue Bots - based the movies, G1, Animated, and more.
