Transformers/G.I. Joe Crossover Movie? Possible, but Not Likely

Given the long standing relationship between the two franchises it was only a matter of time before someone asked the producer of both the Transformers and G.I. Joe films, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, if a potential crossover film between the two was in the cards. During a recent interview with Cinema Blend he was asked about the possibility of such a film. He doesn't rule the concept out, but at the moment it doesn't appear to be on the radar. See his quotes below:

Once again, getting back to the evolution of the blockbuster movie franchise, one of the things that we are seeing a lot of right now, and it’s in great deal due to The Avengers and The Expendables is kind of the idea of both continuity explosion, like the idea of creating a larger universe and also just creating a team and I’m just curious, what’s your perspective on that personally and is it something you could see being part of future projects you’re working on?

In terms of Joe or just in...

Well, in terms of Joe, for example like G.I. Joe and Transformers both happen to be Hasbro, Paramount and you.

I guess it’s possible. I don’t know. I think I probably at this moment, I resist it. I don’t know necessarily why, but I just think there’s so much that’s so rich in the mythologies that I don’t think they need to draw from the other. I think, I didn’t rule it out for me and I think those things have somehow for me, sort of in the past, they made me feel like a little bit cynical exercises in just drawing money out of something. It’s not to say you couldn’t do it well, but both these properties have such rich mythologies with so many characters, that you could go a lot of movies before you start running out of ideas of what to do. But it’s not to say, if we found the right… I’d hate to set out to do that, but if I heard a story where we went, “Oh my God…,” I could see a story right now about machination, machination of war and that could lead you sort of intrinsically to a Transformer. I think in general, Marvel is doing it within their own universe, right? And so it doesn’t feel gimmicky in that way. I think that’s what I would really try to resist.

Good. Was never a fan of the crossover anyway.

Plus Transformers has pretty much firmly established it's self movie wise and G.I. Joe is struggling to get there. Trying to mesh them together would require a lot of explaining (like 4-5 TF movies in and now suddenly they roll out the Joes? hmmmm)

I really don't see how different a crossover film between the two would be from how the TF movies already are now. Just swap out the N.E.S.T./military character actors for the Joe/Cobra character actors, and there you go.

I say "Joe/Cobra" since Cobra would have to begrudgingly side with the Joes and Autobots to stop the Decepticons if they wanted to survive, since them teaming up with the Cons might not prove advantageous to them what with the Cons likely being careless enough to accidentally step on and crush their human allies during the chaos of the battle.

they might have already considered this, wasn't there an older script of the first transformers where josh duhamel's character was actually a Joe character? or is that just a rumor that spread out back then?

I always thought, since the start of this 80's revival trend a decade or so ago. That if there was any Hasbro property to intermingle with the Transformers was the Evil That Lies With the Earth itself, the INHUMANOIDS. And with the whole TRANSFORMERS PRIME having it turn out Unicron was actually the core of our planet. I was wondering if since Orchi and Kurtzman were some of the original writers on the first two flicks, and are the producers of TF:Prime, if the Unicron storyline was originally the writers' original plan for the films' introduction to the Chaos Bringer. But things changed along the way, so it got used for the series. But have Metlar, D-Compose, and Tendril be creations, or something created by Unicron's prescence. They'd make interesting foes for Optimus and company on the big screen.

On the contrary. It was indeed an idea conceived especially for the TF: Prime series as it was one of the very first ideas the show's creative team thought of when coming up with ideas for the show during they earliest stages of initial planning. Thanks goes out to writer Steven Melching for that bit of behind-the-scenes info. ;) 8) :-B

They would totally make a mess of this. Any time you bring too many characters together it ends up a disaster because they are all one-dimensional, and the utter bungling of the GIJOE movie franchise doesn't help.

Thing is, this COULD be done amazingly well.

For tips just reference the amazing WWII TF/Joes crossover with art by Jae Lee about a decade back...utterly incredible.

This happened with all the Transformers films already haha!

Damn....I should really stop taking pops on how bad the films are to me.
Personally who needs NEST when you have Snake Eyes?
