Except I feel even Animated told a better story than TFPrime, and it was primarily intended for younger audiences than TFPrime.

They either weren't allowed, or choose not to get to deep into the fiction, so some character development here and there to introduce the players, some shallow investments into future fiction and that was what season 1 was supposed to be. Maybe that's not what you want from a 26 episode season, but it makes it easy on the watcher if their time investment isn't wasted because Hasbro changes it's mind on Prime.
I'd feel better about that if they hadn't delved into the backstories of the characters. Even the Optimus/Megatron origin story was completely mediocre. Then you have the origin of dark energon being Unicron inside the Earth, which is not so much mediocre as actually being completely dumb. So yeah, all the huge setups that affect the series in the future are not exactly a good sign. Then you have the writers themselves, who's work in the past completely varies from director to director, but when they've worked more on their own in the past it has also been mostly mediocre.
I should make a drinking game out of this.
