I promised in the episode that I would cover some of the basics and let you see how simple setting changes can affect your photography. I'm not claiming to be great at this and I know that some people who are more down with Photography than I am might take exception to some of how I explain things here. That being said, I've only been at this for a few months and small tutorials like this have helped me. Hopefully it can do the same for you.

To start, let's look at the set up:
Image
Set Up by ME_Counterpunch, on Flickr

What I have here is a light box and some cheap table top lights. You can make one of these very easily by using a cardboard box and some tissue paper. Check it out here: Light Tent Tutorial

By using a set up like this you are taking control over your photography and minimizing the difficulties that indoor shooting can present. The light set up you see here is enough to generate quality pictures and the material on the sides of the light box diffuse it enough to eliminate shadow effects. On occasion, I will add a second set of lights on the side, but very rarely is it necessary to use direct frontal lighting.

F-Number/Stop
Let's mess with the F-Stop for our first group of pictures. Typically the F-Stop is going to control your focal length, or the point of focus. Think about when you see a picture that has one aspect of it in perfect focus while the background is blurred. This is the main mechanic of your F-Stop.

It's something you have to experiment with to figure out what you want in your particular shot. But for now, let's look at what happens when you increase the F-Stop number while holding the other components steady:

F-8, F-11, and F-14 Respectively
Image Image Image

These pictures hold the ISO at 100 and the shutter speed at 0.5 seconds. Now, focal length isn't a real issue here because it's all in the box but what you can observe is that as the F-Stop increases, the more light or exposure time is needed to maintain the picture integrity.

Shutter Speed
Shutter speed is easy. It's how long your lens is going to stay open for the shot. What you need to know is that if the camera is actually in your hands, the faster the shutter speed, the better. If you notice a halo or multiple image effect in what you're doing, it's probably because the shutter speed is too slow. The easy, easy, EASY fix is to use a tripod. You can have almost any shutter speed you like so long as the camera isn't moving.

0.25 Seconds, 0.50 Seconds, and 1 Second
Image Image Image

Once again for these shots, the ISO is held at 100 and the F-Stop is set to 8.

ISO
ISO is a way to measure the light sensitivity of the film. Since we don't use film anymore this is a measure of your camera's light sensitivity. The less light, the higher the ISO necessary to maintain image visibility. The trade off for a high ISO (which lets you take a picture in poor light conditions) is that your image quality goes down and it goes down quickly. Let's look:

ISO 100, ISO 400, and ISO 800 Respectively
ImageImageImage

Ultimately, taking decent indoor pictures is a balancing act with your ISO, F-Stop, and Shutter Speed. When one is changed, the other two have to be altered to compensate otherwise you start getting pictures that are too dark or too light.

When you start isolating aspects of your set up, you gain a huge degree of control. You want to take the highest quality pictures possible? Then your ISO needs to be as low as possible. You want to focus on one aspect of a picture and blur the background? Start with your F-Stop and then go from there.

Why bother? Why struggle with these manual settings when your camera has an auto setting that will allow you to just point and shoot?

This is why:
Image
Auto Setting Shot by ME_Counterpunch, on Flickr

The Auto setting captured this image at an ISO 400, with a F-4, at 1/60 of a second. The camera also forced a flash that was not needed for this shot. When compared to the other images above you can see why.

Compare this to the base-line manual settings here:

Maybe I'm being a bit 'special' but I can't find the new episode on the RSS feed.

EDIT: The direct link in the news article works fine though. Don't know why I didn't try that first. Sorry.

Actually, it's not coming up on iTunes yet either... So there may be a delay in the upload.

Let me look into it.

Nice podcast! Good discussion on photography. I use the same basic setup on all my pictures, and the following settings on my SLR, to give them a uniform look

Aperture (F-Stop): F/8
Exposure: 1/400 Sec
ISO: 400

I use an off-camera speedlight connected to a cheap cable that sits on the hot shoe, I normally use it at 1/4 of its strength and bounce it off the white ceiling. I agree that it would be good to see photos of people's setup to give help to other photographers.

PS. Love the rant on Fun Pub - spot on :APPLAUSE:

Started my day with DVR'ed Walking Dead, followed by a new episode of the Twincast.

I'm pretty frustrated with FunPub. The credit card issue is only the most recent and truly harmful in a long string of FunPub dropping the ball. The only reason I'm a member is for the Botcon discount and the exclusive figures (though some of the figures are also examples of FunPub fucking up).

The condition of the TFCC website has been pathetic for years. Frankly, it screams "amateur". Maybe Hasbro should consider employing webdesigners from some of the TF fansites, all of which look and function better than the Club site.

Despite the naughtily worded FunPub sentiments, this is a great start to the day, and to wedding week. Five more days! Take care, Seibertronians, see ya'll in Dallas for **** 2012!

Your podcast rules. I'm all caught up and have been supplementing with'that other website's' podcast in between episodes. I can't even believe how much more awesome the Twincast is.

Well, I can kind of believe it. I guess.

Anyway Fun Episode, Mr. CounterPunch Good Sir I believe you should use profanity more on behalf of the Community and not just with Fun pub (Dirty Bastards) and I can say that safely, say the former, because I kinda had theft of something you mentioned at the end happen to me. :-$

Cool topic on toy photography. I been interested in doing that for about two years now and haven't stop shooting tiny little figures. It is such a great hobby to get into for any new comers. Nice tips Counterpunch. I think more and more people will get more satisfaction once they know how to handle lighting correctly.

At this time I would love to share some of my toy photography with you all. Please check it out and if you like them, just subscribe and follow me at Deviant Art under AliasAngel2005. :D

Hey, guys! I'm not a regular poster on this sight, but I do love the resources here and I've listened to every Twincast. You guys do a great job.

The reason I wanted to post, though, is just to comment on the identity theft issue. I, and a few other people I've talked to, have had a rash of spam email and telemarketer calls since the FunPub breach went down. Many of the telemarketer calls, when I ask them how they got my number, state that I am a previous customer. These aren't random calls, either, as they usually ask for me by name. The worst ones are the calls trying to get me to buy porn (and not the robot kind illustrated above). I have two young daughters at home, and I don't want one of them to pick up the phone and hear someone talking about that stuff. Or worse, if my wife answers and they describe me as a "long time preferred customer!" Besides that, I work nights, and the damn telemarketer calls interrupt my sleep during the day. :-x

At any rate, when trying to figure out what caused this spike, the only thing I can attribute it to is that FunPub's database had our phone numbers. I was lucky that my card wasn't hit before I pre-empitvely canceled it, but that was simple to fix and is done with. Who knows how many companies are going to end up with my phone number or email address? This issue of telemarketer calls, spam email, and God know what else, will probably be going on for years.

I've decided to send FunPub my message with my wallet. I'm done with the TFCC and BotCon until they can demonstrate some better level of customer understanding. Most of their comments on message boards and Twitter seem condescending to the fans. They also have the balls to ask us to store our credit card information AGAIN on their new store website. Well, they can try to auto renew my membership as much as they want, since the only card they have is the one I was forced to cancel because of them.

Hope to see some of you at TFCON! :D
