Twincast / Podcast Episode #78 "Dramatis Personae"

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Those were the days indeed. Wish people would refrain from dissing on any particular era. I for one am more of the G1 (especially the Japanese take from Headmasters to Victory) era. But you will never hear me bad mouthing the other eras (particularly I enjoyed how Beastwars connected to G1 when Megatron tried to change history). Not too fond of Beast Machines but it does have its moments. If I had any complaints with Animated, it was the art style. Story wise it was okay.

Love how latest iterations of TF are sporting more......serious story lines. (I'm breaking with the not dissing any era) Unlike the Bayformer series which was schizophrenic in the storyline (1st 2007 movie was the best imho of the series)

G1 had many "imperfections" to put it nicely but that's probably its charm too.

As commercialism? Wasn't the cartoon (all eras) meant to be glorified advertisements?

In a lot of cases, though, there may not be anymore toys to sell. For some examples from the past decade, the Unicron Trilogy cartoons all had definitive endings to their cartoons, as their toylines were also coming to an end.

Thinking about it, pretty much every cartoon after G1 had to have a definitive ending since their toylines were also ending. With Prime Beast Hunters, the only reason the toyline is continuing is because Hasbro needs some filler line product on the shelves between now and AOE, just RiD served to fill the gap between Beast Machines and Armada, and Classics did between Cybertron and the 2007 movie. ;)

Toralei_De_Nile wrote:I suppose a definite ending really does hurt series sales though. When BW First ended those Transmetal 2 figures were shelf warmers even up to RID/Car robots came out.
If there were Transmetal 2 toys shelfwarming that late, then that must have been the fault of the stores ordering too many since there were no more TM2 toys being produced that late in the game (save for Tripredacus Agent). Not to mention that hardly any of them were show characters, so those didn't sell as well as the show character did anyway.

Though, there were a few BW toys being released secondary to the main BM line, but these were either redecos of older toys or the Mutants, which were released as just a means to milk the popularity of BW for all it was worth. ;)

Toralei_De_Nile wrote:Recently-ish when Animated ended two years after Rodimus and Arcee toys were still on Toy's r'us shelves too.
That's because those two toys weren't released until two years after the show ended. Hasbro wanted to drop the Animated line and move on to ROTF and the 2010 toylines, but fan demand for the figures managed to help squeeze those last few Animated toys out to retail, and only Toys"R"Us would carry them. so those two being on the shelves so much after the show ended wasn't due to shelfwarming, but due to such a delayed release for those figures.

Toralei_De_Nile wrote:The wal-mart I worked at still had that giant optimus prime, covered in a gross thick layer of dust in the back room and they put it out in the seasonal aisle during spring and summer time XD
Now that thing shelfwarmed regardless of whether or not the show was airing since very few even wanted that thing. ;)

For the life of me I really can't remember talking about or criticising G1 enough to illicit some of the responses here.

No one on the show is a G1 hater. If you think that, you are wrong and you have clearly not been paying attention.

Further, if you think any portion of the franchise is beyond discussion and thereby criticism, then you have no place at the table to talk about the opinions of others.

I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to say anything. I listened to the podcast yesterday at work and unless I got distracted by all the dots in ArcMap, I don't particularly remember anyone dissing G1.

I love G1, but I enjoy many of the other series that have come out. I still consider myself a G1 fan, I hate the term 'GeeWunner' as well and hey, 95% of my collection is G1! I still put in the DVDs and watch a marathon of episodes. They are great for what they are, the series that started it all and when I watch them it still makes me feel like a kid again. Things evolve over time and that's why over the years, the characters have changed, the storytelling has gotten better, the animation techniques have improved and things like that. Discussing things like that doesn't mean we hate G1 ;)

Yeah, it's...distracting.

I think while we on the podcast want to create discussion, we also don't tend to lean so heavily to one side that we don't let others share, or aren't able to see and hear their ideas. Unfortunately, we are also on a time limit, so to speak and share every idea that everyone wants to share is not always able to be done, or comments and ideas can get forgotten, or the time for them has passed, as you wait your turn and try not to cut someone else off from making their point.

burning_sirius wrote:You're G1 ideas, and great analysis of stories and characters.

Thank you for that. I think one can read posts/messages/e-mails any way they would like and often with a leaning towards the current mood they are in.

I suppose I felt defensive because I myself, not a 'geewunner', love G1. My favorite characters all are G1 in origin, and I collect several characters infinite toy interations, from G1 to present. And I feel lucky that is an option for me to do.

However, just because I love G1, I also love to criticize G1 for everything that Ryan, and Bob said it has. But I still love it: cartoons, comics, and all.

Thanks for the feedback. We're always looking to improve the podcast. This discussion has been great everyone.

I've never heard any significant amount of "G1 Hate", I think almost all adult TF fans enjoy it with the understanding that the often rushed process and different standards of making cartoons back then left little room for characterization. In my experience most fans like G1 toys and the cartoon

There are plenty of folks on this site who did grow up with the G1 cartoon but don't hold it to the same standard now as they once did as children. There are many aspects of the show that have simply not aged well, such as the lack of character development, the obvious commercialism of the plots, and the numerous animation errors.

I liked the G1 cartoon as a preteen and still enjoy it to a point, but I accept that it was an imperfect product and contains many things that are more guilty pleasures than signs of legitimate quality.

I guess this can be lumped in with G1, but my favorite cartoon series is Super-God Masterforce. Even though I usually dislike the human characters in Transformers, I really enjoyed this series. I thought it was a very interesting take on Transformers.

That's my favorite SERIES. Nothing will beat the '86 Movie. That will be my favorite Transformers cartoon until I die.

I do have to say I agreed with Razorclaw about G1 being the weakest(Note: I never watched RiD or the Unicron Trilogy). I love G1, but the cartoon is very dated. Some episodes are still fun and cool, but I don't think they stand up in story quality compared to some of the later series.

I haven't finished the podcast, so I'm not sure what Counterpunch's question was that Seibertron answered with Bulkhead, but to me, Bulkhead is the standout character from Animated and Prime. Both versions are cool. I would love to see him get a Generations figure and get worked into the IDW continuity.

Bulkhead appears in Monstrosity, albeit in a minor role. Gotta wonder if he'll reappear during Dark Cybertron.

Your exact words were "those who don't like G1", not "those who hate G1". There is a difference between "not liking" something and "hating" something.

Ultra Markus wrote:and besides back in the mid eighties watching transformers as a young impressionable kid we thought this was cool we thought that there was none better and didn't think about the quality of the show..until now that we have grown up and can look back and can compare it to other shows then we say it wasn't that great but back then we thought otherwise...
Exactly. We were young and innocent, incapable of making objective opinions about quality and such. But now that we are, any of us a free to change our minds and decide for ourselves how we now feel about it, whether we still like it,no longer like it, or feel indifferent toward it. ;)

Ultra Markus wrote:so then nobody who followed transformers from the beginning in 1984 that collect the comics and toys of many generations of shows and toy lines not you or i or anyone else can call them selves a true transformers fan? then many of us are pretty damn close then
The point I was making is that there's no such thing as a "true fan" since the term is so elitist that it cannot be adequately defined.

We are all "fans", so that ought to be enough to not need to label anyone's fan-ness being "true" or not. :-B
