Postby Viagra Prime » Sat Jan 29, 2005 9:16 pm

Well pepie beat me to it in posting his TWW Grimlock WIP. Here is what I have so far. Very early stages as I only started this about 2 days ago. One of the objectives I hope to accomplish is to be able to mold cast it. That's why I'm going to be very careful about which parts I can glue together and which parts I need to leave as is until I mold cast it. Comments and crits are very welcomed, particularly in terms of proportions. BTW, this will be more or less the size of an Alternator.

Its a neck protector or whatever its called. I still need to sand it down. Also, the head I'm going to use is going to be smaller than that so its not going to look as tight.

a little update. Don't mind all the gaps as that can be easily filled in with putty later and sanded down.

Looking great so far VP !
I can see some obvious differences with mine but it totally depends on which pics you base him off.
Yay for continuity :D

Construction and everything looks slick!
I do have to ask, when transforming to altmode.. is your chest flipping a total of 90 degrees or somewhat lesser ?
Thats something that varies through the comic too 8)

Yes, there are differences but that is good. I'm basing mine off more of the 10fingers pics but I'm also using the comic book pics as reference as well. I'm also adding my own changes like the vents look for the chest (not seen in either 10fingers or comic book). I'm having his chest flip a bit less than 90 degrees as seen in the 10fingers pic but that may change later.

No, I don't consider this competition. I'm glad that some one else is doing it too because it helps me learn and adjust things as I go seeing other WIP pics.

Update: Started on the torso (pictured), thigh (not pictured) and shoulders/front tracks (pictured). FYI, its 6 inches from end of the shoulder to the other end. Again, feedback much appreciated.

Looks really good! But you don't think the shoulders need more structure support? Or am I just saying this too early? Can't wait to see it!!

The shoulders are tricky, the complete arms move into them so they have to be as hollow as possible.

Seems like every pic I see of TWW Grimmie is a liittle different from the other, lol (this is the first pic I've seen where the forearms are more rectangular versus cylindrical). That's good in a way I guess. What I'm doing is looking at what I like and incorporating that along with some of my own design (not much my own but some). Thanks for the pics Josh.

BillBadAss wrote:But you don't think the shoulders need more structure support? Or am I just saying this too early?

Yes, the shoulders are still very very early in its stage (probably only 10% done). I'm not sure what you mean by structure but I still need to build the tread cover piece and the side piece as well as put in some treads (debating whether I should scratch build with styrene or use actual rubber treads). But if by structure support you mean make it more sturdy, then I will add a bit more reinforcement in there but not much since that whole thing needs to house the whole arm so I need that inside as hollow as possible. However, I plan to mold cast that piece which would give it alot more sturdiness since it will become more or less one piece instead of several pieces glued together.

You might want to check out Don's design sketch of grimlock, located here :

Helped me out! LOL, I was stuck on the whole transformation of the arm when Iskander pointed me out to this pic.
It was on our site all along

Thanks for the heads up Pepie. Those pics are awesome looking. If I had the time I'd make all of them. I wish Hasbro would make a line off these designs. Anyways, those pics helped a bit. But I think most of my design will be based on the 10fingers pics since everything seem to be in proportion with each other going from alt mode to bot mode. The size of certain parts change in the drawings (comics) and understandably so since this is how most sketch artist draw to put emphasis on certain parts. I pretty much have the whole transformation down. I just hope it all works out. I'm not sure how your approaching it but I'm basically building the basic structure of the whole figure first. Details added later which includes sanding and smoothing edges out. This way, I can visually see the proportions of the figure that I have and make any changes as necessary. If changes are made then at least I need only change the basic structure or throw the basic structure and start anew (hope I don't have to do this). If I start adding details now then I may have to scrap everything including the details. Anyways, I'm almost done with the basic structure of the thigh. I've started on the lower leg portion as well. After that I will work on the hip joint and then finally arm.

I'm using Testors cement glue for plastics or just plain super glue. Add some putty to patch up the gaps and it should also give a more secure bond as well.

Update:
Finished the basic structure for the hip joint, thigh, and lower legs. Those and the shoulders are mold casted for symmetry (and in case I screw up and can mold cast more). No sanding and no details added yet. And some parts are held together by tape for now. I want to see if all parts look proportional before proceeding with details. First few pics are bot mode. Last pic is basically what alt mode would look like. Again, crits/comments much appreciated. Thanks.

The chest is suppose to sit on a inverted angle in Chariot mode.

TFM

TFM EDIT: Woops.Sorru. Didn't mean for that to come out sounding the way it did.

Looks good man. I really can't wait to see it done. Leave some hollow area's to house electronics so you can give him Sound effects. (At least we got a purpose for that stupid E.Bulkhead backpack now.)

Actually, I do have the chest angled. Its a bit hard to see in that pic though because of all the whiteness (lack of color).

proportions look great VP! How are the legs holding up with such a construction, is it strong enough?

What TFM means is that the complete torso flips 90 degrees.
I cant point it out in words, a pic says more I guess.
It's a hard part to construct, it has to hold a lot of weight in both modes.. especially in altmode.
