Ultra Magnus Dilemma...

Here's my problem.

I'm a Magnus fan, and thus would like to get a Prime version of the big guy to go with my Prime figures. However, I'm on the fence about the Voyager fig, since I have a few issues with it:

- The hammer/gun looks too big and I've heard it's hard for him to hold it in any sort of pose

- He doesn't seem as big as Magnus should be, in either mode

However, those are fairly minor issues... scale is NEVER perfect and I've read about the shoulder fix. Even still, given the announced Weaponizer figure, which would be a bit larger, probably have some sweet guns, and isn't priced much higher than a Voyager, I'm considering waiting it out to see what the Beast Hunters Weaponizer Magnus will look like. He would probably be in better scale with the other Prime figures, and I'm sure if he has a hammer it would be a more reasonably sized weapon.

My concern with the Weaponizer though - so far, I'm not much of a fan of the Beast Hunters figures' aesthetic...

So should I scoop up the Voyager figure if I find it, as a 'pretty darn good' figure, or wait to see if the Weaponizer is 'More Epic!' or 'More Fail!' before dispensing my cash? I really just don't want to miss getting Voyager Magnus at retail prices if his upsized counterpart is going to be too spiky...

Thanks.

Voyagers are Powerizers. Your're thinking about Weaponizers. And...it's no rumor.

We don't know how big Ultra Magnus is supposed to be because he's not in the show. How do you conclude he'll be Weaponizer scale?

What, the fact that all their cars are spikey? Because they're not all like that:

Wait for pics of the Weaponizer if you're really that concerned about his "scale." It's not like any of the issues on the Voyager can't be easily fixed.

Ah, the "wait and see" dilemma. I have been burned by this before. I don't "wait and see" anymore.

If I were you, I would buy the voyager if you see it. If you are concerned about the other on one being bigger and better, you can keep it boxed, keep your receipt, and return it. Use the store credit to buy the new one.

Oh yeah, my bad. Fixed. Thanks.

I'm using the advanced method of common-sense/door size comparaison. If a voyager truck has doors that, when compared to a deluxe car, look like they were meant for Bilbo Baggins it's a safe bet the truck is made in a smaller scale. Granted, it only really works for vehicle modes, as Prime does use mass-shifting for its bots. ;-)

PrymeStriker wrote:What, the fact that all their cars are spikey? Because they're not all like that

True, but I'll put more stock in what the deluxe figures look like when considering the rest of the line. Mind you, they did re-do Cyberverse Bulkhead, so who knows.

Good advice, but I know if I buy it I'll just have to open it.

The longer I have mine the more I say skip it. His shoulders just suck, they can not hold up his weapon. Which is to bad because I like his hammer/gun, it has such authority behind it.

The shoulders can be fixed with the tried and true clear nail polish trick. Made especially easy in this case because of how far the ball joints are projected out from the upper torso. Easiest time getting limbs off then back on I've ever had.

As to scale, This guy is pretty darn big in robot mode. I have him along side FE Bulkhead and FE Prime and he is right up there in height even with the semi crouched pose I have him in. And he is a PRiD mold. Measuring up to FE voyagers :)

I vote buy him and open him up. If you really really dislike it, the toy is still scarce enough to be able to re-sell it with little to no loss.

Use nail polish. Loose shoulders are the complaint I keep hearing about and they call him a suckish figure because of it. Loose joints are the easiest QC issue to fix, just take action.

Ok, I've never modified one of my transformers minus changing out batteries so this scares me a little. I actually love my UM and don't want to ruin him. However, I would really like to get his shoulder issue taken care of.

So my question regards how exactly to accomplish the clear nail polish mod. Do I pop off the arms and coat the inside of the ball joint? Or do I coat the end of the ball instead? I'm assuming I then just wait until it dries and then pop the arms back on? How many coats/how thick? Lastly, is nail polish a better fix than super glue?

Any guidance would be much appreciated. :D

Back on topic...I recommend this figure even with the shoulder issue. Also, if the Weaponizer UM is a better figure than some of the other Weaponizers then I'll probably get him too. As far as scale is concerned, I think either would be fine as it just depends on your personal taste as to how big UM should be compared to the other bots. Yet, as PrymeStriker alluded to earlier, I bet we see him in the show. If that happens, you can choose the best scale for you, be it classic or show accurate and go from there!

Personally, I don't care what color nail polish I use. I try to get the clearest one available to me without going out and buying some. Anyway, yeah: you pop the arms off and apply the nail polish, wait for it to dry, and pop the arms back on. Three to five coats will do the trick.

Sorry but any figure I have to "fix" it to make it work is a sucky figure. Even if after the fix it turns into the best figure ever, it's still sucky!

In term of scale, Voyager UM is perfect with the other RID figures. From other pics, it looked he's slightly shorter than the FE OPrime version. I don't know about the UM Weaponizer version, but to me, I really love the Voyager. In fact, I love him so much, I'm trying to find a second one. He really looks a lot better in person. The downside, it's just a shame that they cut down the paint app as well as the poor shoulder joints. If you want to wait and see the Weaponizer pic first, there's always Ebay should the Voyager UM is no longer available.

If that's your only complaint, it shouldn't be much of a "suckish" figure.

Loose shoulders? Oh no!

Loose ball joints can be fixed, but you choose not to. This is why I asked if you had anymore complaints, which would help me better understand why you think Ultra Magnus is a "suckish figure."

He doesn't like the figure. Does he really need to explain why so you can understand? You may choose to paint your figures with nail polish, he does not. Pretty simple really.

Would anyone who actually owns Magnus be willing to take a few size-comparaison shots with other voyagers and deluxes, or know where to find some? I know that the galleries don't have him yet, so....

I'm starting to think that bird in hand is worth two in the bush... if I find him I may just pick him up (hopefully some on-sale nail polish too... ;-))

Does he need to? No. Bashing the figure over a minor QC issue isn't making any sense to me. You seem to think I'm forcing him to give me more reasons; I asked him a simple question and he gave me a simple answer (with another question). That's fine.

Well, I snapped a quick photo of Magnus next to Megatron & Breakdown (with Knock Out and Soundwave on the side), and Peaugh's review of the figure at 13:09 compares Ultra Magnus with PRiD Optimus Prime.

As you can see, Ultra Magnus is one of the tallest PRiD Voyagers.

I got my FE OP out of his box (just moved and haven't set up my TF display yet at the new place) to compare his size with my UM. FE Optimus is just a little taller than UM, at least at the height of the head. However, their respective shoulder pads are pretty much at the same level. FYI, First Edition Optimus is taller than the PRiD version. I hope this helps you make a decision! :BOT:

It doesn't need to make sense, that's the beauty of individuality. If somebody isn't happy with a figure for any reason, accept it and move on.

I did move on. It still doesn't make sense, but that doesn't mean I can't accept it. So, in this situation, my decision was not to feed a baiting troll. You can't blame me for asking a question, which you may or may not have taken the wrong way. >:oP
