Thats just it, it never really happened.

The closet episode is the season 3 "call of the primitives".

and while they almost fought, they never really did.

Grimlock tripped 1 Predeicon [Headstrong] at one point, and later fired some flame breath at a group of a few Predidicons and Terrarcons.But thats not really fighting or holding them off.

That was what I was referring to, except I exaggerated a lot it seems. Probably listening too much to the bloated description from the wiki...which is odd since I've seen that episode...

i dont think he can in the book or the show but i agree with the animated part i never got why animated magnus gets so much props

Because he had a big ass hammer. Still wouldn't be enough against Grimlock, but it made him kind of cool.

I think that Ultra Magnus would win this in most continuities:

G1 Cartoon: Let's be honest, Grimlock way too retarded te be a threat to UM
G1 Comic: No contest, Ultra Magnus was the only one to ever beat Galvatron, Grimlock got his ass kicked by Megatron.
G2 Comic: Sure, Ultra Magnus didn't appear here, but Grimlock is probably at his strongest here.
Animated: No fight ever happend, but I'd give it to UM
