Also is it a boss enemy or the player character?

Japanese with american influence. Technically a boss. attacks with flashbacks.

It's the Sorrow from MGS3. He doesn't really attack with flashbacks, though.

Just a bunch of generic scary faces and images. If they were going to show bits from Big Boss's past or future, it would have been a lot easier to figure out.
