If the G1 Cartoon was a TV series where would it take place?

I have often thought about what a remake of the G1 cartoon series as a high-end 3d animated/live action series would look like, I'm not a big fan of the more recent Bay movies. Realistic versions of the original G1 characters, 80s sets.. What I'm a bit stuck on is where would you shoot it. Trying to capture the original vibe of areas like where the Ark crash landed and where a lot of the battles take place.. Generally they seem to be desert-ish with some greenery.. and rivers.. and a lot of places to steal power from. I thought I'd ask here.. where in the world do you think the landscape would be a good match for a live action G1 series? I work in visual effects and am looking at composing some stills to feel out the idea.
I'd love to know what you think.. If you have any images or links that would be a huge help.
