Where did Sparkplug go?

I noticed that Spike's dad Sparkplug dissapeared after the movie. Did he die? Did he get some sort of special job with chip? What happened exactly? I know there are some comic explainations, but no cartoon ones as far as I know. Even in the days of G1, you would think something that obvious would have been explained. Where did he go?

The production script for the season 3 episode "Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1" reveals that he was originally supposed to make an appearance in the episode. But, for some reason, he didn't, and so his sole line of dialogue was given to Blaster instead.

He might still be alive, but I think the most widely accepted fate of his among the fandom is that he passed away at some point.

Yeah, I read as much. So there really is no official reason for his dissapearence then? It's just basically "He's been replaced, deal with it!" I think thats kind of dumb, but it was the 80's.

Same thing happened to several season 2 Autobots who weren't shown killed in the movie or ever showed up again in season 3.

Just vanished. And it sucks, too. Same with the season one/two Autobots who disappeared. :-x

And Chip, who's probably still alive, though.

He was even originally going to appear in the first episode of The Headmasters anime, until those plans got scrapped for some reason. Toei even drew up a character model for him as an adult, which ultimately went unused.

*Sigh* And those are some of the reasons I do not like season three overall.

I naturally assumed he had just passed away, it makes no sense of course. As a kid I often wondered what happened to Spikes mum, again I came to the same conclusion.

There is at least some precedence for Sparkplug's wife being deceased, as the Sunbow production bible lists Sparkplug as being a widower, even though such was never said in any form of actual G1 fiction.

It's interesting to note, that, other than Defensor, a lot of Chris Latta's old characters were either killed off or disappeared after the movie. Starscream showed up in a couple episodes, and Cobra Commander ("Old Snake") guest stared, but other than that, Wheeljack was killed in the movie while Sparkplug and Reflector kinda fell off the map.

And come to think of it, Defensor didn't show up all that often either.

He did have a decent amount of screentime in "The Ultimate Weapon", though. ;)

Inconsistancy just bugs me. Like the bay movies. I like them, but I cant help but to nitpick them for every little flaw I can find.

Even in the 80's, you would think that a cartoon would be able to keep it's facts straight. In the end though, I think that season 2 just opened up this huge realm of possabilities. Then season three wasnt able to handle it or SOMETHING. I mean, if all those characters died, they could have at least said so. If they can show all those autobots die IN THEATERS then i'm sure they could drop they "They all died during the fight for autobot city" bomb.

Imagine being a kid in the 80's, being SO STOKED to go see Transformers: The Movie. After you see all those autobots DIE right in front of you. Then, you finally see Optimus pass. It couldnt have been easy. So saying all those other characters died wouldnt be that bad after THAT. You probably think "Oh, they will come back. They'll be rebuilt, right? RIGHT?

Things were different in the 80's than they are now. They didn't bother to deal with the inconsistencies back then because the most they cared about was selling toys.

In my fanon, Wheeljack and Windcharger were repaired. The only ones to die were the ones on the shuttle and Huffer.

I say he,Chip and maybe a few minibots were all killed by Trypticon when he destroyed the Volcano.

It was never confirmation of Wheeljacks death within the series.

I'm pretty sure it was strongly implied when Arcee drags his wrecked body next to Windcharger's.

She drags Windcharger's body.

Sto's reasoning for Wheeljack's fate being ambiguous is due to his body not turning grayish like other dead characters did, as well as no season 3 mention of him dying.

strongly implied is a matter of opinion,

I seem to recall plenty of characters to have suffered similar damage, but continued to live.

and that we have seen other damaged bots get repaired

Sparkplug got mixed up with a bad crowd, and went through a downward spiral of drugs, drinking, and depression. Then due to some bad luck and poor timing, he was tossed into space, and floated through the abyss aimlessly until being intercepted by Unicron. Unicron turned him into part of Cylonus' armada. He was never to be seen again.
