your argument is well informed and reasoned.

and while I still see Optimus as best, your facts are on point, but I do see some things to question......

- Under his leadership, the Autobots lost their foothold on Cybertron.

I dont think the autobots ever had anything resembling a "foothold" on Cybertron. We see from the episode "War dawn", that the autobots were under dogs from the start of that conflict, and we never saw any evidence they ever held the upper hand.

So, the fact that Optimus maintained the status quo , against such odds, for millions of years can be seen as positive leadership skills.

- In "Rebirth", this is shortly after Rodimus handed the Autobot leadership back to Optimus,

:???:
Optimus "TOOK" :???: back leadership, Rodimus did not hand it back.

I'm a bit surprised here. Some of you are having problem with Grimlock and Rodimus, or even Optimus.
I can think of someone worse than all three of them put together.

Slag (G1)
The one to live up to the dinobots' bad reputation.

There are other bad candidates from the dinobots (Snarl and Sludge), but Slag definitely stands a head higher than the rest. Even Grimlock

Super Megatron wrote:Optimus Prime, hands down. Let's look at the facts:

- Under his leadership, the Autobots lost their foothold on Cybertron. By the time the 80s movie came out, the Autobots were kicked out of Cybertron altogether and had to stage their home on Cybertron's moons and on Earth.

- Because of this, the war between the two factions had spilled over to other world - something that, despite Optimus's grievances in MTMTE and how the war wasn't "our problem", it escalated regardless.

- In "Rebirth", this is shortly after Rodimus handed the Autobot leadership back to Optimus, the Autobots had lost control of Cybertron (again) to Galvatron.

- Optimus lost to Galvatron while Rodimus didn't (Prime threw Galvatron out of Unicron at the end of the movie). Galvatron is one of the weakest Decepticon leader, if not the weakest, that faction has ever had. That speak volumes as to Optimus's leadership ability compared to Prime's.

- Under Prime's leadership, Cybertron prospered and developed diplomatic relationships with other worlds and established alliances. Under Optimus's leadership, however, the Autobots were made pariahs or targeted by humans many times throughout their time on Earth (Megatron's Master Plan, Attack of the Autobots, Aerial Assault, Prime Target, etc.)

- Even in the Japanese continuity (Headmasters), Optimus's leadership was shoddy. He couldn't prevent Cybertron becoming a burnt-out, inhospitable husk.

Concerning the last opinion in the Japanese Headmasters, even Galvatron wasn't aware of the plot by Scorponok. I doubt it even with the best leadership skill could he have prevented Vector Sigma's destruction (?)

But I think I have the abasolute worst choice...

Miko. Not only is putting a teenage human girl in charge of the Autobots going to piss a bunch of them off, but, this is Miko. Reckless thrill-seeker with no idea of her limits and a fondness for rushing in headlong without having a clue what's going on. If there's anyone who doesn't desert, there's good odds she'd get them killed doing something stupid.

Rodimus......lets cybertron blowup. Then to top that hands off leadership to Fort Max just moments after they view the end of their homeworld and decides to bum around in space with Blurr and Kup. Way to go Roddy....should have just let Magnus deal with things.

Side Burn. Commands all the Autobots to adopt red sports car alt-modes, then starts referring to the faction as his harem.

Blurr would by far be the worst possible leader for the Autobots; the generation 1 version of course. The dude moves and talks so fast its like he had to much coffee, no one hardly ever understood what he tried to say and hardly knew where he was because he was always moving so fast. He's transformers' version of DC's The Flash.

Imagine Seaspray trying to rally the Autobot army in the face of a Decepticon attack. The little bubble-breathing wanker would hardly inspire confidence would he?

Oh, like Animated Blurr would be much better. He still talks too fast, plus this one doesn't repeat himself. He still moves too fast to keep track of. Plus, he's a TERRIBLE judge of character. (*coughcoughLongarmPrimecough*) On the plus side, he does seem slightly smarter and more skilled than his G1 counterpart.

People seem to be nominating a lot of characters they don't like for this, so I'll go in the opposite direction and name a character I really like who'd make a terrible Autobot leader.

Windblade. She's certainly dedicated and compassionate, but combined with her inexperience, that compassion would likely be her undoing. She'd be too hesitant to kill if she thought an enemy could be redeemed, too worried about collateral damage, and overly-cautious trying to keep her own troops safe, not to mention she'd be doubting and second-guessing herself the whole way until she either stepped down or was relieved of command... Or died in action.

She could learn, probably, but being thrown in the deep end, there's no way she'd make it.

Ultra Magnus. He's got leadership qualities and everything, but he's really only suited to leading a small group, not the entirety of the Autobots. When he was put in that position, he failed miserably. That's why the Matrix wouldn't open for him.

The Matrix didn't open for him because he wasn't the chosen one and it wasn't their darkest hour - nor were "all one". It had nothing to do with him - whatsoever. Also, he didn't fail. He kept everybody alive at the expense of his own life...except that Junkions are magic.

It's amazing how people can watch the same thing and not get the same thing out of it. I'm not arguing whether Ultra Magnus should be Autobot leader or not, but I definitely think you're way off on your reasoning as to why he is the "worst".

In truth, we have no actual cartoon evidence that even Optimus Prime could open the Matrix if it wasn't the darkest hour of whatever. Even season three of the show hints that no one ever opened it before Unicron. They all just carried it around as a super MacGuffin needed to magically solve Armageddon style problems. Magnus' stand against Galvatron wasn't Armageddon...Unicron was...til he attacked Cybertron and "All are [became] One".

I also disagree with anybody who said Hot Rod on the grounds of being him being "whiny". In fact, there are only 3-4 episodes where he has misgivings about living up to Optimus Prime out all the season three episodes...and in Fight or Flee he was pretty bad-ass - among other times.

Anyway, within the parameters of the thread I'd say Tailgate is worse than even Beachcomber - although the Autobots have many stellar choices for terrible leaders.
