Burning Overdrive! Robots in Disguise (2001)/Car Robots Appreciation Thread

Discovered we didn't have one yet, so I'm making it. And I'll get it started with my best pics of my RiD stuff.

Image
Ultra Magnus, carrying the Autobot Brothers.

Image
Image
Prowl, whose doors naturally need repair.

Image
Image
Rollbar, a bootleg I really need to replace one of these days... He makes G2 Slingshot look durable by comparison. I wish I was kidding.

Image
About all he's good for is being Ruination's leg. He can cope with that, just about.
Ruination is a mix of bootleg Armorhide, Movor, and Rollbar, and legit Mega-Octane and Rollbar. With most of his combiner kibble from the desert version (or the original KO the limbs came from).

Image
Image
And ending things with Omega Prime, because Omega Prime is awesome.

I really need to photograph my RiD stuff more.

Love this line. Its interesting that its one of the few lines where only Autobots got news molds, while Decepticons / Predacons are all repaints of molds from other lines except for Megatron.

I keep the car brothers on display on the TV dresser. Sadly my Super sideburn has failed to translucent plastic crumbling, and the roof no longer stays in the ball joint.

If I ever manage to find a cheap Rapid Run to complete the Train bots I'll be happy.

Technically there was one other new mold for the Predacons, among the non-show characters: Bruticus. But that was by accident - obvious delayed Beast Machines mold is obvious.

Ugh, I continue to kick myself for selling off my Midnight Express, especially since a shipping mistake ate into the profits. I need to get all the Trainbots thanks to that. The trick will be to ideally find a gun-less Takara Railspike (since I have Railspike's gun).

Someone really needs to do repro sockets that can be glued onto the Autobot Brothers.

Ohh, yeah that Bruticus... BM Maximal design ends up as Predacon filler.

Repro sockets, I think that would require a bit of sanding of the existing socket. I'm sure you could 3D print one if you had the measurements right.

I'm afraid to transform X-Brawn now. So many translucent load bearing hinges on that thing....

I really love this line, I have most of it including some of the exclusives. Instead of what I have I'll list what I'm missing.

All of the Tiny Tins (no need, seemed redundent)
Bruticus
Skid-Z / Wind Sheer
Mega-Octane (really need to get him so I can finally have Ruination)
Gas Skunk (I got Takara Guildo and Goosher online on clearance and had BW Stinkbomb so never got a proper RID version)
Sky-Byte (had and didn't really like TM Cybershark at the time)
Galvatron
All of the KB exclusives (except for Megatron Megabolt)
Cryotek
Dreadwind and Smokejumper
Air Attack Optimus Primal
Ruination Urban Camo

Some of these aren't all that expensive on the aftermarket and can be easily found anytime.

I do have Universe yellow Optimus Prime and darker Ultra Magnus along with their Spychanger repaints, Titanium Optimus Prime, Timelines Sideburn, Legends Headmasters Black Convoy, Generations Sky-Byte, Unite Warriros Baldigus, and the Encore two pack.

I had Brave Maximus on order with BBTS at the time, but canceled due to an unexpected bill. They had been taking orders for a while so I thought I'd be able to just order it again later, but it sold out a few days after I cancelled and it still hadn't arrived by the time I could afford it again. What a huge mistake!

I'm not sure exactly why, but when I first read about Car Robots early in 2000, I was extremely excited, and to this day, it is still fun in both Toy & Animated form. In fact I think my love of this series has only grown over the years instead of decline.

Botcon 2000 in Ft. Wayne Indiana was the only time I traveled a long distance to go to a convention. I had paid ahead of time to get the exclusives Apelinq and Shockarackt. Upon getting them I was able to quickly straight up trade for the brand new releases of JRX & Baldigus (a decision I would absolutely do again, no regrets), even though I kept them MISB and never opened them, I was more into that back then.

I also was able to get Raw VHS copies of the first 8 episodes of Car Robots. Torrenting was in its infancy back then, and I didn't trust it, and of course video sites didn't really exist. I was able o see the first 2 episodes of BM S2 early as someone uploaded them using apple QuickTime. But watching pixilated versions on a tiny section of my monitor that took like an hour to download wasn't great. Plus I knew BM was going in a direction I didn't care for, so Car Robots was very refreshing.

Later that same summer I went to SDCC and got Fire Convoy and Gigatron. I kept them MISB as well. Later in 2001 when the English Dub and RiD was released in the U.S. I got Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, the Build Team, and team Bullet Train. Opened them all and played with them. They were amazingly fun. I was able to get a MISB Build King later on from a local collector. I just wanted all the "combiners" from both iterations of the show, and the faction leaders.

I never got any of the Hasbro variants of "Ruination" because the colors were never animation accurate (and they released 3 of them  ).

Sadly I sold my whole collection in 2007. But I was able to get the whole series on DVD. There is an inexpensive Malaysian set that is great, better than tracking down the UK R2 DVD which are long OOP and super expensive. Of course both the English dub of RiD, and fan subbed Car Robots are free to watch on Youtube now in full, until such time if ever Takara, Hasbro, Studio Gallop, or Disney notices and decides to have them taken down, at least I'll still have my DVD.

When the final Unite Warrior release was announced as Baldigus, that was a no brainer for me, I have it along with all the others. I'd definitely pick up modern interpretations of any of the other combiners as well, just not sure how they could be improved upon despite being 20+ years old now.

With all due respect to the greatness of Beast Wars as a story, I wasn't into the toys because I was in my mid-teens and had other interests. The RiD line got me back into collecting Transformers in 2001 since G2 ended. I remember seeing Ultra Magnus on the shelf at Target and I was back into it right away. Got Prime, Scourge, Sky-Bite and the Autobot Brothers. Then the bullet trains.

About 5 years later I kinda lost interest again and ended up donating most of my toys to a couple of kids I knew who didn't have much. These days I have Scourge, Super Sideburn, a kitbashed version of Omega Prime, and UW Baldigus representing the characters from that series. But I do have a lot of fond memories.

I need to bookmark this thread for once my guys come out of the moving totes. I have a decent chunk of this line, including both Landfill and Rail Racer. I still need a good chunk of the good guys, and on the bad guy side I just need Scourge once he's out in the netflix line, and Baldigus, but that UW toys is unreasonably expensive nowadays

I don't know about remakes, but I would love to see the trains reissued. Last time I handled mine the plastic felt uncomfortably stiff and creaky. Mine are the clear window versions so that might have had something to do with it knowing how poorly the Car Brother's plastic has aged.

Well, if you did some mix-and-matching (including some disassembly to swap Mega Octane chestplates) between the standard and desert versions you could get fairly close.
I suspect that the major color shifts on the standard release (aside from Armorhide) were because someone at Hasbro had a "Nope!" reaction on seeing the gold plastic and Greejeeber's metal flake green.

I dunno that he'd hold up, honestly - seems like he'd be dwarfed. Do you have the original?

He really is... Unfortunate, since in his case he fixes a size issue.

Depends on who you are comparing him with.

Technically he'd work well size wise with the UW version of Baldigus / Ruination , but would look too small with Megatron.

G1 combaticons are simply too small either way.

If anything, UW + Velocitron Sc... err Black Convoy would then require a new Megatron mold, maybe out of the dragon Megs that is said to be coming, even if not doesn't have the 6 / 10 modes of the original.

Its kind of poetic really that to make a correctly scaled set of R.I.D Deceptions you need to pull figures from entirely different lines.

Some comparisons for what to expect with Velocitron Black Convoy:

I don't own an RiD2001 Scourge in any capacity yet

RID was the line I got into TFs with (at the tender young age of 4!) with Sideburn. I've since managed to reacquire Megatron and get the Super redecos of all three car brothers. I've also got someone new coming in the post- Wedge! I'm not sure if I'll bother with the rest of Landfill, but Wedge looks like a lot of fun for such a simple figure. Just a nicely poseable, cute little bulldozer lad.

OUCH. Hopefully you'll have a shot at a similar listing.

Somehow managed to score Scourge on eBay for a really sweet price, complete except for the disks. He is awesome!

Could use some advice on working the air-powered launcher though. And on storing the second rocket.

Slide the missile all the way in, then hit the air bellow really hard in order to have it shoot the missile a reasonable distance. Make sure there are no kinks in the cable.

The missiles store inside the tanker, there are indents for them on the sides. The smaller missiles go on one side (5 max), the larger air missile on the other.

Been trying that with little success, but I'll keep at it. Hopefully I don't have to replace the hose...

That much, I figured out already, it was pretty easy (same for storing the quintuple launcher with the other 5 small misiles loaded in).
What I'm talking about is storing the other air-powered missile. I've been taking advantage of the rubber head to tuck it away still on the launcher, but that doesn't feel right.

EDIT: Thanks for your help tho

I totally think IMHO Fire Conoy/OP is one of greatest Primes still. The mold is an epic one weather it's the fire red or the piss yellow :)) ...'nuff said! :VEHI:

I think so too, he's 1 of my favorite Primes, so much so that I used to own 2 of him to display in super mode and as Omega Prime. My 1 and only complaint with the figure is the rubber wheels which are prone to cracking.

Time for some overdue updates in here.

Snagged Takara Railspike, Heavy Load, and Wedge in a lot for $49 shipped back in June. Super happy with that. I now have 1/3 of Rail Racer (argh why did I have to sell Takara!Midnight Express back in 2016... Damn you, past me...), and 3/4 of Landfill (already had Grimlock).

ZeldaTheSwordsman wrote:Rollbar, a bootleg I really need to replace one of these days... He makes G2 Slingshot look durable by comparison. I wish I was kidding.
So, this?
It came to pass, at the start of July.

Image
I acquired a wonderful, shiny, blegitimate Rollbar.

Image
The knockoff has struggled on valiantly with frequent repairs, and I thank it for its service, but it is now enjoying a mandatory (though well-earned) retirement.

Image
And Ruination is thankful for having a more solid right leg.

I took down all my shelves to replace them with new closed ones because I'm sick of dust. Somehow my trains yellowed TERRIBLLY despite not being in direct sunlight. Going to be giving them the peroxide treatment.

I have that Baldigus bootleg only because I wanted to use the accessories on Ruination, but I never did get Mega Octane. Really need to rectify that sometime soon.

Considering that he is a mish-mash of colors, having 2 different colored feet shouldn't bother me. But it does.

Well, he's not hard to come by.

I wonder if anyone's scanned Brave Max's playmat - or the larger mat it goes with/duplicates a sample of that was only available as a mailaway

Nice. I had all the Car Robots combiners MIB and their RiD counterparts open and displayed as part of .y original collection until they were sold in 2007. I of course picked up the Baldigus UW set. If they ever made Generations updates to JRX or Build King, they would be instant purchases.
