What to start with if I only want Megatron toys?

I've been thinking a lot about changing the focus of my collection. I decided I'd like to collecting Megatron toys and possibly a few Optimus Prime toys. But mostly Megatron because I tend to like his Alt. modes, such as the various Tanks forms he has been. I have a few Megatron figures, but I don't know which ones to go for next.

What I have so far: Deluxe WFC Megatron, Cyberverse Dark of the Moon Megatron, Legends class G2 Megatron, reveal the shield G1 Megaton, and Leader class Movie Megatron. I think that's all of them. I'll have to look again because I don't have my transformers on display yet.

I was also thinking about clearing out my collection once yard sale season begins. Getting rid of other Non-TF figures any maybe some TF figures too, should make room for what I really want. Anyway, I've been looking around for other Megatron figures. I don't know what ones to get first. I noticed there are people who mostly collect Optimus Prime, and I though about doing that once since there are so many of him. what I might end up doing to trying to balance my collection. One Megatron for every Optimus in my collection. But I want to start with Megatron. With all that said, Anyone have suggestions for Megatron figures worth getting first?

I think it all depends on your financial situation and what Megatrons have higher sentimental value to you. If money is not a strict factor, I'd say make it fun and go chronologically. Start with G1, then G2, then all its variations, then Beast Wars, all its versions, then Beast Machines, and so on. Also, take into consideration whether you want strictly Megatrons, or would you include Megatron-equivalents, such as Overlord from Masterforce. Try to make it an adventure. It will add more value to your figures individually as well as a whole collection when you're all done, especially if there are a few pieces you have to hunt/negotiate for and it's harder to get. Good luck, and have fun! :D

As for Primes, if you're a completionist, you better have a damn good paying job, or a trust fund or something, 'cause if not, that will be a near-life-long project. :P

I have some suggestions, keeping esthetics and transformation in mind. Mind you, with Megatron you automatically set yourself open to Galvatron repaints. ;) With that:

Robots in Disguise Megatron
No, not the Prime one, the 6- or 10-changer from 2001. The Hasbro versions both use the same mold (the Devil Gigatron retool), so both can achieve 10 modes at least. Black or White, your choice. I would be careful with the gold chrome paint as it has corroded to a nasty green on mine.

Energon Megatron
Simple transformation yet looks awesome in both modes. He's modeled more after G1 Galvatron (to the point he is named Galvatron in Japan through the entire line), but that shouldn't stop from at least checking him out. His little tank is cute too.

Cybertron Galvatron
The only instance in which I prefer the repaint over the original, simple because he has G1 Megatron's colors. A tad complicated, but his race car mode is unique among his forms (even with RiD Megatron), the jet mode is... decent but the robot mode screams power.

Henkei/United Megatron
Get him, get him NOW! He is, and will be the only regular-sized Megatron with a gun mode we'll ever get. Don't look into he fact he's got a backpack, and is based on a NERF gun (not to mention the US version being colored as one), but the Japanese colors make a BIG difference. United should be easier to come by, but I prefer the Henkei one. The chrome on the scope does chip off, so be careful.

Revenge of the Fallen Voyager Megatron
The Leader one is good I'll admit, but the Voyager has better proportions, easier transformation and is more screen-accurate in design... just not the colors. He was planned on being repainted, twice in total, but neither came to pass. So the sea foam green is your only option.

Dark of the Moon Voyager Megatron
I had a hard time recommending this guy, but the vehicle mode and the use of the tarp is worth nothing. Also interesting is that despite the robot mode being made of the whole vehicle, trailer and all, the vehicle mode has a (limited) point of articulation at where the hitch would be. The robot mode is... plain, but the tarp adds character in concealing the molded damage to his face.

Animated Leader Megatron
Possibly the closest in G1 Megatron's design, and just plain cool looking especially with the Fusion Cannon and his two swords. 'Nuff said.

I would recommend that you get a complete G1 Megatron. I don't think the RTS one came with all the parts, did it?

I would also recommend the Animated Leader. Great figure. Looks great, unique alt mode, fun to play with.

Finally, get a Classics version of Megatron. I know a lot of people prefer the Henkei one, but I think the Classics one looks just fine.

Don't start with Armada Megatron, because if you do he'll kill all future Megatrons you put on the same shelf.

You really do need a proper G1 Megatron. Be it reissue or original. Just make sure hes got all the accessories. Bit of a bummer when there is no stock or fusion cannon.

R.I.D Megatron (or Car Robots) is a must have. Excellent toy.

Henkei Megatron, too. Hes a nice example.

I'll float TM2 Megatron out there as well. That toy is pretty damn cool.

You buy Armada Megatron.

Because he will use the space bridge nexus to travel to every universe and slay every single thing he sees.

Then you buy ToyWorld Hegemon, cause the only thing that has come close to G1 is that, other than Henkei Megatron.... which is still subpar.

GG pce late.

I agree with the general consensus; Generation One Megatron is a must. If you'd really like to start off with a bang, try and wait for Generations Leader Megatron, if the Master List is to be believed (since mostly everything on it so far has been accurate).

I can only recommend Megatron's that I have crossed path's with.

Here they are:

Generation 1 & 2

Masterpiece MP-6 Megatron + Kremzeek (the best, in my opinion)
Japanese Megatron (Or, the less-expensive eHobby Megaplex)
TF Collection Megatron (Or secondly, the less-desirable, but still great Encore)
eHobby Black Megatron (Or, if you can afford it, the original and more-desirable black Microchange version)
WST Megatron
G2 Megatron (Big Green tank)
G2 Hero Megatron (Smaller Purple Tank)

Beast Wars

Series 1 - Telemocha TM-SP - DX Megatron
Transmetals Megatron (Get the Japanese version. It won't break at the waist like the US / European release)
Transmetals 2 Megatron

Post-Beast Wars

Energon Megatron (Both sizes are awesome)
Cybertron Megatron (the Galvatron repaint looks better to me, but we're talking Megatron here)
Cybertron Beast Planet Megatron
Movie Leader Class Premium Megatron (Original is good too, just not really screen-accurate)
ROTF Leader Class Megatron
ROTF Leader Class Shadow Command Megatron
Botcon Shattered Glass Megatron

After those, I tend to loose track of his other incarnations. Other versions don't work too well for me (especially the first one from Prime) Yuck!).

:CON:

In my Opinion these are the top Megatrons to have:

G2 Megatron
Image
Classic Tank Mode is aweosme.

R.I.D Megatron
Image
Can;t beat 10 odes, And I just love his robot mode.

Energon Megatron
Image
Awesome Wingpsan in Jet mode, statisfyingly Galavatrony Robot mode.

Henkei Megatron
Image
He's a Gun.

Animated Leader Class Megatron.
Image
He's big, he's chunky, he's awesome.

United Beast Megatron
Image
Best alternative to a Beastwars Megs out there. Better articulation too.

Honorable Mention, because there's just something about him I dig, despite his shortcomings
