The Mid-America Trucking Show we mentioned a while back is on its way, and courtesy of Overdrive Online magazine, we get a look at the new Transformers: Age of Extinction Optimus Prime - in his Western Star 5700X truck (according to the site, at least - the caption below claims a different number). Check out some images below, and even more here!

On display this week at the Mid-America Trucking Show is the Western Star 4900X that stars as Optimus Prime in the next iteration of the Transformers movie series. Above is a gallery of the truck on the show floor. (Photos by Jason Cannon)

Looks overly elaborate. Not quite 'in disguise', is he...

 Darn near looks like the Cybertronian version of himself instead of an earth alt mode.

that just isnt prime at all, dont get me wrong its a nice truck but its a terrible alt mode for optimus. Rodimus on the other hand it would be perfect for, looks pretty damn close to his energon incarnation. But id rather have prime get a crap look then have Rodimus get ruined by bay.

After looking at the WFC toy pics side by side with the pics above, I have to agree. It wouldn't take much to make the toy match this truck. Larger grill set a bit higher up on the nose of the toy and give it the flame job and there you have it.

Makes me want to dig out my Energon Rodimus now. I agree though, it's just too far removed from what we have come to know as Optimus or at least as the Earth based Optimus. I'm shokced that they actually had respect enough to bring in a flat nosed semi for Primes intro scene in the new film but honsetly, I would rather they had kept that version of him throughout the film, even if he upgraded to a brand new flat-nose with extended sleeper and shiny paint job than to have them use this version. Indeed, it's a very nice truck and would make a great Rodimus but it just isn't Optimus.
Of course now folks will be dumping on the BOTH of us telling us to get over the 80's, blah blah blah, etc... to which I'll just have to say "F*** 'Em!" ;)

It's become fairly clear to me that since he seems to start the film in his "Evasion Mode" (the rusted out old cab-over Marky-Mark tinkers around with in the trailer) while he's evading capture by the humans who are now hunting Cybertronians, this blinged out supertruck mode isn't intended to be a disguise. I'm of the mind that this is his way of coming right out of hiding to face whatever threat is presenting itself, sort of announcing to the world "I'm back, bitches!"

I fail to see how it doesn't seem like Optimus. Optimus's robot mode is supposed to look like a knight. And I could definitely see this vehicle being a type of "knightly" vehicle... if they had vehicles like this back in those days. It looks strong and powerful, while still pulling off a noble and just look. Just like a knight; just like Optimus Prime.

You damn straight. People had the same problem with the first trilogy's Optimus. "This isn't Optimus! Optimus is supposed to be a flat nosed truck!" He hadn't even been a flat nosed truck since G1. Now, they finally have a flat nosed truck as Optimus in the movie and people still aren't satisfied.

Though I am partial to G1 my take on why the Truck mode doesn't fit as much is that in G1 the Transformers had individual personalities that manifested itself to the alt modes they chose. For Example Sunstreaker being vein as he was made sense that he would pick a Lamborghini alt mode to be extravagant. Prime was one who cared more about taking a proton blast to protect his fellow autobots than saving his paint job. I can take different as I say that Ironhide's mode although different than G1 made sense as far as his personality went being gun metal and all. However we shall see. If this mode is explained as being some kind of Cybertronian Knight upgraded mode then maybe it will make sense. Maybe that's why it already looks so alien and not disguising.

When I first saw this mode for Optimus I was disappointed. I didn't like how big the truck was. Now its grown on me and I am beginning to love it. And his robot mode is really cool and very knightly! I just hope that this movie is better than the previous three. Yes they were good but were lacking in too many fields. :BOT:

This is a complete turnaround from Peterbilt, who wouldn't even let its logo be displayed on the nose of the truck. I am impressed by the truck mode, even if I agree with those who say it fits Rodimus better. (Well, it DOES.) The robot mode, however, is thoroughly inferior to its previous design. I understand the need for change, but it could have been much better. The new robot mode is just fugly.
