Marketing, no doubt. That may also be a remnant of the fact that the head of his acolyte, The Fallen, is shaped like the Decepticon symbol in RotF and he is considered Megatron's mentor in the movies.
How they're gonna explain that in Prime, who knows?

That combined mode really is aweful. Doesn't even appear functional. Decepticon logos are a no-no as well.

Ironhide looks to be suffering froms some bad Photoshop, but Optimus is probably benefitting from it.

Unicron is OK, but he shouldn't be combining with OP. Maybe he should with Megatron, but it look's weird with both.

I don't know about you, but it can be used as if he was in exile, like in the 1986 movie.

By the way, a pink Ironhide? Must be an animation error. He is looking sweet, but let's see about the US release.

If you don't think he should have Decepticon logos, don't put them on. I'm sure they're labels that you have to apply yourself anyway. So just don't.

Decepticon logos suck, and the combined forms look really weird....so much kibble in the back.
Yes, there is something awesome about Unicron turning into his head. But I don't get why they photographed it like that...is it supposed to be mountains, a head, AND a ship? Or is it just so bad the photographers had no idea what it was supposed to turn into?

It is not a pile of rocks or a spaceship and it is not mis-transformed.

Unicron turns into a volcano with his face on the front of it:



Hopefully the text in the image is clear enough. Basically, at the top you can see the top of the volcano with the opening where magma is shooting out.

Down the sides (the shiny/chromed bits) are magma flowing down the sides of the volcano as it erupts.

His face is on the front of it from which he speaks (to Megatron?).

All of this hearkens back to the episode where he first showed up.

the robot mode of unicron looks cool, only if it were a supreme class and he had a planet mode
