Voltron/Golion collecting and fandom?

I didn't see a Voltron/Golion thread here so I figured we could get one rolling.

I vaguely recall watching Voltron when I was a kid. It was before my time so I watched it sporadically when the TV stations decided to show an episode here or there. So I don't know much about the fiction but I do remember seeing the toys. I remember coveting the Matchbox Voltron set as a kid when I saw it on the top shelf at a local Zellers. I don't even know how it managed to stay unsold a few years into the 1990s.

I do remember the announcement of the MasterPiece Voltron a few years ago and I did consider buying it but at the time I wasn't a toy collector so I let it go.

Now I'm a collector and recently I purchased the Blazing Sword Voltron figure from MattyCollector and I also bought a subscription for the Club Lion Force deal in which I'm committed to buying the upcoming Voltron lion and pilot figure set that will combine to make a 23" tall Voltron toy. Some people are criticizing its lack of metal content and the spring loaded auto transformation gimmicks but it takes me back to my childhood and my excitement for the Voltron cartoon of the 80s.

I'm considering re-watching Voltron but I'm just starting to watch Golion and Voltron Force.

So who has some photos and/or stories of Voltron/Golion toys they'd like to share with their fellow Seibertronians?

Tell me more about this huge Voltron. I'm curious to see if this is something I will want.

I bought the plastic version of the Masterpiece Voltron that had a vintage themed box. The MP version sucks, but the removal of die cast made it awesome and durable.

I watched the series when I was little, but don't remember much. I know Go Lion is supposed to be the better story though.

The large sized Voltron Classics figure from Mattel is going to be 23" tall in combined form and will be all plastic in construction. There was talk about diecast content early on but due to the sheer size and weight of the figure, diecast was eschewed since it would cause balance issues. The combined form will have standard articulation of hinged elbows/knees and swivel shoulders. I don't know what kind of articulation will be implemented for the lion heads. I don't expect this figure to possess a high degree of articulation simply because at its large size, an overly poseable figure will likely be very unstable.

The design of the toy is inspired by the appearance of the animation model, which means it's not going to be a more idealized styled design like the MP Voltron and will use white plastic instead of silvered or chromed parts. Each of the 5 lions will come with a mouth blade weapon. The Black Lion will also include the Blazing Sword and shield. The lions will have basically an auto transformation gimmick, which can be seen here:

The lions are designed with "cockpit" compartments in the torsos, much like the Panosh Place figures, which will accommodate 3 3/4" figures of the Lion Force pilots, which are also a part of the Voltron Classics toyline. The figures will come with two heads, one with a helmet and one without, a key, and one part of the Ultra Blazing Sword for the combined Voltron form.

The Keith, Lance, Allura, Hunk, and Pidge figures, as well as the lions, can be purchased without subscribing to Club Lion Force but Sven is an exclusive figure that will only be available to Club Lion Force subscribers.

Here's the current store page for the Voltron Classics products:

Here's the info page for the Club Lion Force subscription, which will not be available for purchase after August 5th:

Wow. I want that Voltron.

Do I have to get a subscription to get him? I just want to get the lions.

$290 for the full package is excessive with the pilots at $15 a piece.

EDIT: I realized I can order them separately.

I do want a Sven though...

Okay, I've never used Matty collector and I need some help here.

When I subscribe for the Voltron package, am I charged right away or am I charged as each figure becomes available?

Also, when is the first lion available? It talks about red lion being the first, but gives no clear answer as to when he will be released in 2012.

When you subscribe to Club Lion Force, you'll be charged for the subscription fee($15), and the first two toy releases(Red Lion for $35 and Lance for $15), plus the shipping fee of whichever option you choose.

I don't recall seeing a release date but I believe the plan is to start the toy releases in January 2012 with each Lion and corresponding pilot to be released as pairs each month(January, February, etc.).

So my first charge will be $65 plus shipping? Or am I charged the $15 first followed by the Red Lion and pilot charge once they are available?

Okay then. I'm going of it.

I might as well purchase once so I don't have to fight the site each time a new lion comes out.

When the sale for SDCC toys went live on August 1st, I spent 20 minutes getting through the site traffic just to place an order for the Blazing Sword Voltron figure. I definitely don't want to do that each and every time a new Lion and pilot are released so $15 for a subscription is a small fee in order to guarantee every figure plus an exclusive figure.

Yep. I'm not willing to put myself through hell each time one of these is released so I'm just gonna buy the subscription. Life is easier that way.

If you read through the subscription fine print, they refund $50. The $65 is for verification.

I still haven't subscribed. They extended the date out to the 22nd so the demand for it seems low.

The video is impressive, but not enough to sway me. Not yet. I think it looks nice, and I was ready to pounce on it, but once I saw the price and the video...not sure it's worth that price to me.

Actually I haven't heard about this being low

This and Ghostbusters seem to be going well it's MOTUC and DC that haven't met the quota

Oh I can't deny that, but for what you get, I'm just not sold on them.

Well unlike MOTUC you can get all the "A" list stars in one year instead of waiting years for the figures

I just preordered the 30th anniversary MP Voltron. I was curious for those that have it already if the know what the dimensions of the packaging is off hand? Strange request, I know... I'm not even sure what the 30th box will look like, I think they packaged it differently for different releases of it.

I'm not sure there really is a definitive Voltron out there yet, but I think the die cast is what I like about it, it is like a more articulated version of the 80's die cast toy.

This seems to have flown under the radar. I wonder what the final size will be. He looks gigantic, even next to the 30" jumbo Voltron.

I saw this as well. Love Voltron and currently own the Matty Collector version. $300.00 is crazy steep otherwise I would be saving were it not for TF purchases I want to make this year.
