What are you reading? Thread

Maybe for my New Year's Resolution, I'll read more books. I make time for tons of comics but not enough novels and there's plenty I want to read.

Currently, I'm still chipping away at The Dark Tower Volume III by Stephen King. Love the previous books, it's one hell of a journey.

I recently finished Max Brook's World War Z, the follow up to The Zombie Survival Guide. The Survival Guide is fun but World War Z takes zombie fiction to another level. It's a fictional oral history of a massive zombie war. The first third is the initial outbreak, which we've all seen in zombie movies. The second third is living & fighting in this zombie apocalypse, which is territory that we somewhat see in The Walking Dead. The final breathtaking third is the remaining humans uniting and fighting the zombies all over the world.

What I love about it is that it takes real world scenario and dumps the undead on them. What happens to North Korea, the conflict between Palestine & Israel, or developing countries. It covers everything from politics and social issues. Well done.

I read The Gunslinger (which is the first of the Dark Tower books, right?) but didn't really like it, so I didn't start the second one. I recently finished the Zombie Survival Guide, and am looking forward to World War Z. Right now, however, I'm on a Stephen King kick. Just finished Christine (so much better than the movie, though I really like the movie) and now I'm reading Pet Sematary. In between, at work, I'm re-reading all the TF novels, just finished Ghosts of Yesterday, next time I go to work, I'm taking the novel of the first movie with me. Fits into the side pocket of my cargo pants.

The series is a very enjoyable read. A lot less cookie cutter than most of Kings works, and very creative. I'd say more of my opinions, but I'd hate to spoil anything for you.

I listened to WWZ on audio mp3s, which was amazing considering the interview type writing, with different voices which really nailed the characters.

I currently picked up the Horus Heresy series. It finally tells the story of a paramount event in the history of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It really does a great job portraying the betrayal and down fall, all at galactic proportions. I don't like to use the word "epic", but it's all I can describe it as.

I'm 6 books in as of last night! :-B

Finished Warriors: Sky Clan's Destiny by Erin Hunter a couple weeks ago. It's a follow-up book to Firestar's Quest. For those who are unfamiliar, Warriors is a series of books about four clans of feral cats living in the wild. It is rife with territorial disputes, intrigue, religion (of a sort) and a lot to like for all cat lovers out there. Though one will find these books in the young adults section, they still make for a great read for all ages as my forty-two year old self will attest to. ;)

And in stark contrast, I am now two thirds of the way through Warhammer 40K The Horus Heresy: Fallen Angels by Mike Lee. In this tome we get a continuation of the pivotal events that forever changed the Imperium of Mankind as seen through the eyes of the Dark Angels space marine chapter and its enigmatic leaders Lion El Johnson and Luther. Good heady stuff, and violent too!

My next read will be the Winds of Dune by Brian Herbert. Dune is one of my all time favorite series, and all these prequels and sequels by Frank Herbert's son have been an absolute Godsend for one such as me! Gotta get my 33% off Borders coupon....

Does any one read the Redwall series?

I read every one of them as a kid, and now I can't wait to go home and pick up some of them for a quick read!

There's just something charming about small woodland creatures having fantasy adventures!

I'm struggling to make myself finish "The Aftermath" by Ben Bova.

It's like a "in-between" book in the "Asteroid Wars" series. Not a bad book overall, just not nearly as exciting as the others.

As far as a "want to read" list? I've always told myself that I was going to read Asimov's "Foundation" or "Robot" series. Maybe this year...

At first I saw this thread and was excited. Then I opened it and I think I'm in the wrong place. You guys are reading fun stuff, and I just passed the halfway point of Dickens' David Copperfield. Up next is Dostoevsky's A Raw Youth.

Sorry, cool readers, I'll leave now. :D

At the moment, nothing. But only because I finished every book I was working on within the last few weeks. :-B

Coworkers got me into a series called "The Dresden Files" by Jim Butcher about a modern day practicing Wizard in Chicago. "I'm in the Yellow pages, under Wizard. I'm the only one". Really fun series and I've read 11 out of the 12 books so far.

Off of the wizard set, picked up a random book called "The way of shadows" by Brent Weeks. Part of a trilogy and I plant to pick up the rest.

Finally, picked up MogWorld by Yahtzee Croshaw. Yes, by the Zero Punctuation guy. Pretty funny book, especially if you understand the cliches of MMORPG games. So good I read it a second time just for the hell of it.

A trip to Borders and I now have my books for the next few months.

Picked up the rest of the Night angel trilogy, the sequels to the Way of shadows book I mentioned previously.

Picked up the first of the Chronicles of The Necromancer: The Summoner. looked interesting and if it works for me, will pick up the rest of the set.

And on the subject of the undead, also now have the Zombie Survival guide to kill time with.

Time to plug my current favorite suspense/thriller writer Duane Swierczynski. He’s a master of violence & mania. I’m a huge fan of his novels and comics.

Start off with The Blonde, a screwball spy thriller. Jack Eisley meets a mysterious woman in a bar who claims to have poison his drink. Unless she can keep someone within ten feet of her at all times, she'll die. And if he wants the antidote, he must help her out while a government agent hunts her down.

Image

Severance Package.
Then move onto my favorite Swierczynski book Severance Package, an absolute roller coaster of a novel. What happens when you discover your co-workers are actually black op CIA assassins at your dead end job and your boss tries to kill you? Jamie DeBroux hates his job at a financial service company. One day at a meeting, Jamie's boss reveals he is forced to close the office and must kill everyone. The company is a front for a black ops organization and everyone is actually a secret agent/super spy except for Jamie. It takes place over two hours and on one office floor but it's total mayhem.

Severance Package is so much fun. Not to sound like a Hollywood agent but it's literally Die Hard meets And Then There Were None. I can literally see these movies being directed by Guy Ritchie or Quieten Tarantino.

Image

Duane also has some non-fiction books. I love his The Complete Idiot's Guide to Frauds, Scams, & Cons and The Spy's Guide: Office Espionage. Fun reads and I suppose practical if you plan on committing crimes.

Duane is also contributing to the GI Joe: Tales from the Cobra War anthology and earlier this year, GI Joe: Cobra Special #2 had the entire novella in it. It combines several things I love: car chases, explosions, and GI Joe. Love it.

Mass Effect: Retribution-A pretty good Mass Effect novel.

Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne-The first prequel novel reveals a lot of Loghain's backstory and explains his hatred of Orlais and shows his first meeting and early adventures with King Maric. There is also hint that Maric might be Morrigan's father which would make her Alistair's half-sister (or cousin maybe depending on how you look at it) and if you have played the game with a female character then you know what I'm talking about.
I'm not 100% sure about it though.

Dragon Age: The Calling-Second prequel reveals how the Grey Wardens return to Ferelden trying to capture a renegade Warden and Duncan becomes the leader of Ferelden Grey Wardens. I haven't read it myself but it's supposed to explain on things stated in The Warden's Keep DLC and Dragon Age: Origins-Awakening.

Ah, the trials and tribulations of the venerable Captain Uriel Ventris! Awesome stuff. Hurry up and read, cause' next in the series is "The Killing Ground", followed by "Courage and Honor". I believe that yet another Ultramarines title has surfaced in hardcover as well.

I finished WH40K Fallen Angels and started on Warriors: Omen of the Stars-"The fourth apprentice" since it FINALLY came out in paperback. And Winds of Dune sits patiently on my shelf waiting for me to finish.

Those books look intriguing, SC. Might have to give them a try. However, my next book will most likely be The Lincoln Lawyer, but I'll see the movie first. I know, books are usually better than the movies, but that's why I want to see the movie first. If I read the book, I'll know EVERYTHING. But movies usually leave out a decent amount of info, so the book should still be a good read.

I'm just about to restart Lord of the Rings, and Le Morte D'Arthur.

When I've finished up my research on Arthur, I'm planning on writing a book about Arthur, being English and ethics.

I'm reading through Darren Shan's delightfully disgusting Demonata series. Don't read it if you get naseous easily. After that, i can read the Skulduggery Pleasent series, or Angel, the latest maximum ride.
