Robert Rankin?

Huge fan but sadly already read most of his books. I've actually met him a number of times and got him to sign a few of his novels for me. Thanks for the recommendation though.

I can give you some, plus the book I've read: Margaret Weiss, Tracy Raye Hickman and Raymond E. Feist.

The first two co-wrote a series called "The Death Gate Cycle", 7 books long. I heartily recommend trying it, the books even have appendices in the form of illustrations detailing how things work in the 4 worlds, and even songs.

Raymond E. Feist is known for "The Riftwar Cycle", quite a big series that's split up in several sub-series. I will warn you, that the very first book "Magician" is quite a thick pill as it's a compilation of two smaller books.
The resident Rewind... well, half of one

- Greenlight, Lancer and PotP Elita-1 (plus repro Victorion hands and feet?)

I'll add to the list with Ursula K Leguin, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and if you're in for a very good zombie novel not about zombies - M.R. Carey's The Girl with All the Gifts.

I've heard that Raymond Feist was good and had never got round to reading any of his work previously. Downloaded "Magician" onto my Kindle and will start it later tonight.

Thanks for the ideas guys!

MZB, man, I used to love her, but then all these, erm, allegations I'm not sure it's cool to mention on a thread like this came out and, yeah, I can't rec her stuff anymore. orz.

Yes, that is unfortunate, to say the least. :-(

I did like what the 'successor' did with the book series though, in terms of profit donation.

I just finished reading Gone Girl. Good book, but I was kind of disappointed with the ending. I really want to see the movie.

Having finished (again) Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, am now moving (again) to Julio Cortazar's Hopscotch. Both for a job.

Spare time reading, I'm on an Ali Smith collection of short stories. And Mérimée's Carmen is the text I'm teaching this week, so speed re-reading that one too before classes.

Whew.

I enjoyed it! It's a good fantasy with some subversive moves to it, great humour and a really interesting contrast of drawing styles (really simple for Boneville characters, more 'realistic' for pretty much everything else).

Warning: you may crave quiche.

Back on working schedules so skim-re-reading Gissing's New Grub Street for teaching, Woolf's Mrs Dalloway next week.

And for other work, a re-read of Gibran's The Prophet and Heaney's Death of a Naturalist.

When I get back to my own stuff, I might get round to some more Mal Peet. #-o

Having recently watched Mockingjay part 1 I'm ready to read the book.
I'd read the other books prior to the films, didn't manage that this time but the movie has me curious as most times I hear people say they disliked the MJ book.

I've recently finished reading th JRR Tolkien book of lost tales and I'm now starting to read the Hobbit. It's good to read the history of middle earth before the third age had began.

I started on chapter one, so I'm not too far into it yet.

Firefight, secondary book in the Reckoners series, lots of super-powered fun with some actually engaging romance. I'd highly recommend this series.

Books I have read in the last 12 months...

Re-read all of Asimov's Foundation Series (I read these as a kid and have kept re-reading them since, the sci-fi is dated (tech-wise) but they are still very entertaining if you've never read).

Re-read the Lord of the Rings (do it once a year un-abridged).

Neal Asher's Owner Series; Departure and Zero Point (so far I have liked them, they move fast, are interesting but can get pretty violent).

Michael Cobley's Humanity's Fire Trilogy; The Seeds of Earth, The Orphaned Worlds, The Ascendant Stars (All of them were interesting, however a lot of back story information was thrust upon the reader without (IMO) proper explanation; the ending in the final book was a little anti-climatic) There is another Humanity's Fire book out and I am contemplating reading it not sure where and how it is tied to the first three if at all...

Jack McDevitt's Priscilla Hutchins series; Engines of the Gods, DeepSix, Chindi, Omega, Odyssey, and Cauldron. (I really enjoyed all of these)

Currently I have been consuming all of the IDW hard cover trades and will be done Phase One soon, need to start ordering Phase Two.
I am very suspicious of people who don't like dogs, but I totally trust a dog that doesn't like a person...
