A CME actually has hit Earth before, it knocked out the power in Quebec for nine hours in 1989. A nine-hour blackout isn't a world-threatening thing, I've been in one. it's boring as hell but I didn't die from it.

In 1989 most people had phones that didn't require the power grid to work. How many of us have such phones today? Could you imagine the number of secondary deaths that would result from a lengthy power outage without the ability to call for help.

Have you ever lived without modern day conveniences for any length of time Shadowman? What will you do for water, heat, food, protection? If you have a newer car how will you go get these things? If you can not access your bank account how will you pay for them? Will you rely on fema or other government agencies?

Unshielded computers run just about everything today. Just think if they all fried at once. Who gets first dibs on limited replacements, electricity suppliers, factories, water treatment plants, government, phone companies, hospitals?

Try 3 days in the summer in the Midwest. At least I knew the neighboring towns had generators, but keeping food cold with ice bags was fun. With a bigger CME, this could be a problem, especially in summer and winter.

Telephones have never not required electricity to operate. What do you think ran it, fairy magic? Even Alexander Graham Bell's original telephone worked on electricity. In the event of a blackout, even older landline telephones are gone. If you're going to be a doomsayer, at least learn a thing or two about the things you're saying are doomed.

You know what? I'm done being nice to people. You've pushed it too far this time. I'm tired of seeing people complain about you, I'm tired of seeing you look down your nose at people with your posts and I'm tired of your outright abusive statements and attitude.

I'm telling you, not asking, telling... STOP IT. I'm going to have to talk with the other staff members, because this is getting out of hand. You've been doing this for far too long and quite frankly, we're all a little sick of it.

Yawn, that's funny.

1. Older phones themselves do not need on board power.

2. Phone lines and power lines are separate .

3. Landline phone companies have local and central backup power, which means they don't need the power grid to function. So they can operate as long as they have fuel. So as long as you do not have a modern phone you can make calls.

4. Yawn.

Edit 1: stupid phone
Edit 2: I can deal with it Autobot032, it's only the internet.

Yeah but, most landlines can work in a normal blackout, used them myself (don't ask me how, probably backup power or low amount of electricity). Plus, usually in a nasty CME or more importantly an EMP the circuits of the phone gets fried. Even if you build new power lines, those phones and computers are gone with the data with them. Human beings are tougher than we think, but I hate to think about this stuff ever happening, with a diabetic mother and a stubborn emphysmic dad. I not worry about this stuff happening, but I wish technolgy was a wee bit tougher! It would a rough few months if the worst case scenario happens.
