cobo, that post should be featured like a news article. top notch buddy ;)

thank you. thank you so much for this.

i dont know why, but the word "kibble" is like a curse word to this fandom. the only time i dislike kibble is when its cumbersome. otherwise, its part of the damn transformer and what sets he/she apart from others!

Amen shay-jay, aaaaaaaaamen!
Kibble, done right, is THE term of design. For Transformers.

Question:
Would anyone consider MP Datsun Z's feet to be "parts forming"?
I'm still a little unclear as to what that means. Are MP lambor's
legs what you would call, part formy?

nawwww... parts forming is like, G1 combiners fists and feet sitting in the toy box while you play with the base figures. things that actually come apart from the toy. the datsuns and lambos feet, well thats just brilliant engineering.

Right on.
Thanks for clearing that up.
I thought it was more like, hinged plates folding around to create solid shapes or hollow boxes. Prime Ratchet's fore arms come to mind. On him it works really good though. Maybe there's some Animated or Movie toys that are "bad" examples of that. Box forming? :???:

Parts-forming is just that: a toy splitting up into several large parts and reattaching in different places for different modes. The major offender would have to be Godbomber from Masterforce. He consists of these parts:

- 2 legs / Trailer sides
- back plate / Trailer window
- chest plate
- 2 arms
- 2 wings
- 1 gun

Yeah, he's nothing but parts. Here's the vehicle mode:

And the robot:

Image

He partforms by necessity as he's the upgrade for Super Ginrai, forming boots (which would become a standard), gloves, chest armor and a flight pack:

The resident Rewind... well, half of one

Looking for:
- TR Furos (Hardhead's head) and Crashbash (lost him :()
- PotP Punch head
- TR Galvatron right arm (the gun one)
- CW Brake-Neck/UW Wildrider, CW Offroad
- TR Twinferno & Grotusque
- Greenlight, Lancer and PotP Elita-1 (plus repro Victorion hands and feet?)

shhh don't mention his name...He may appear...That's the last thing this thread needs, as Omega is not winning best design any time soon.

Cobotron@ I'm all for kibble, especially if used to format wings or a cape just not if the whole alt mode is hanging on the toys back.

In some respects isn't tidal wave from armada a parts former?

Not quite, he's more similar to a Duocon, except he can split into three parts instead of two, and has a combined vehicle mode that can transform without splitting up. :-?

EXACTLY!

Some time ago I've started collecting Gundam model kits, and I have to say, the thing that sets most transformers apart is actually kibble.

Transformers come in so many shapes, sizes, aesthetics. However when someone coems to my room and sees my shelves full of stuff, they almost immediatelly say it's transformers. Because the appearance of car parts and wheels all around is what makes them different...

Amazing post Cobotron. Not only does it make me want to own the masterpiece, but these may be the only G1 bots I ever get (not on the lookout per say, but they are making me less closed minded about seeking out G1 toys).

And I believe that kibble was always a great part of the transformers brand but the distinction I would like to make is kibble integration. Kibble is a word that gathers negative connotation because of toys like either of the AOE Leader Optimus toys. What sucks so hard about those was that all the truck kibble was unused for the robot mode leaving giant backpaks which some of us (ie Me) call kibble. Pretty much, the reason I love the Beast Hunter Ultra Magnus so much more than the RID Prime one is because there is more kibble/alt mode integration. And I absolutely adore the Binaltech/Alternators line for its car parts being the robot. Those truly were robots in disguise.

On the flip side though, Takara has proven that you could deviate from this with some very interesting designs. This was going to be my next nomination regardless but it fits so well as being an example of a good counterpoint to Cobotron's post. While alt mode integration is key, I have found it very interesting when Takara uses the very same parts from the alt mode but in a way that the kibble is no longer visible, giving way to a robot mode with detail that was never found in the alt mode. Dear friends, I give you: Cybertron Hot Shot

Just look at how little of the alt mode shows up in the robot mode:

Image

Image

And yet, the robot mode uses parts from the car mode, making him still sleek with a nice amount of bulk and heft. This toy simply amazes me. I love the alt mode being a cybertronian lambourghini. We had mentioned before that design is two fold. It is the look of the figure as well as it's engineering. And this guy works that way. The simple engineering means you can have a swift conversion from 2 modes that look nothing like one another. Think about it guys, this is what Hasbro is trying to hard to achieve right now with simplistic transformation. But this is it done right. It is truly a figure for all ages (it's my 11 year old cousin's favourite toy, she usually finds transformers too complicated).

And the style of the figure is something to behold. Speaking of head sculpts, this is probably one of my all time favourites. there is so much detail and sculpting. You have 4 colours playing off one another on this head design with different kinds of plastic as well, giving it a unique look while also harkenning back to a very old school robot look. And speaking of harkenning back, his gimmick is that he becomes an homage to Hotrod:

Image

Sure, he isn't perfect. He has a big buttflap, the doors don't retract across his arms and the legs are quite bulky but to me this is just part of the design and intention to make him quick to convert while using as much as the kibble as possible in the robot mode (ie the legs ad doors).

This was the last line before the movie happened, and the very last states side line which used Takara designs and it was like a last hurrah for the classic transformer design, yet flipped on it's head (or upside down, as is the case with this toy). It's just great.

And once again, check out that headsculpt

I do like the Cybertron hot shot, though my only experience is the redeco that was a Wal-Mart/Asda exclusive. My only wish would be that the wings were a little bit bigger.

All this talk of kibble makes me believe that we should dedicate a thread to the topic.

i LOVED cybertron hotshot, mainly because he screamed hotrod to me. though it lead me to buy the uber expensive galaxy force DVD red exillion, only to be trumped by the cybertron excellion. and that red exillion wasnt easy to find back in the day, or acquire on a line cook's salary

This is the only version I have, and I got it because it was so Hotrod.

This mold is a great example of hiding away the Alt mode. But then there are still some great elements that tell us right away that he's a car. Obviously the tires. But even his chest is still reminiscent of a car hood, with little head lights and all.

WJ88, this head sculpt is a perfect example of the character design continuity from Takara. Silver face. Ear spikes or antenna or fins. Whatever you want to call the. And the fore head intake. That needs a name. Crown point? For me over all other things this design is what separates TFs from the rest. Oh and the kibble. There is a constant in their character design that goes all the way back to Microman.

My favorite thing about Cybertron, is this was the last time TFs really felt like toys. You could crash 'em and bash 'em, and they could take it. They were simple to transform, but they maintained a cool look in both modes. If Hasbro is worried about losing the younger market, they should take cues from this line instead of the gimmicky flippy dippy stuff that leaves the robot mode with no playability.

I can't believe that's an actual lambourghini. Back to Hotshot, I knew he was repainted, but in red he becomes more like Hotrod reincarnated than a subtle homage. I like how the blue makes him his own character. I am glad you guys like my nomination.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but technically it is a "design" feature.

I was goofin' with my RTS Optimus Prime G2, or Lazzzer Prime as some call him.

You all know the window flaps that are painted badly and everyone complains about, right?
I never noticed before, but when they are folded in in robot mood, if you peek-a-boo through the windshield, molded on the backs of those panels is a MATRIX. I dug through the galaries, but couldn't find a pic that showed it.
Pretty nifty.

Did everyone already know that?
Am I knuckle head for just now seeing this, 3+ years later?

Its really cool that you found that out by yourself. I only discovered that from ben's review from bwtf.com

"Perhaps the coolest and most intriguing detail can be found inside the robot mode, specifically inside his chest. There you will see that the insides of each of the side window panels actually come together to create a Matrix of Leadership! Taking the classic Matrix design of a circle in the center with handles on the sides, this is an awesome detail to have been included in the figure and is most definitely not something the G2 version had. My only regret is that it was next to impossible to photograph because the translucent orange plastic just didn't allow for a clear shot of it, but trust me, it's there and it looks really cool sculpt-wise."

Also, since I am here, I would like to nominate the g1 aerialbots for great design. Of all the transformers from my epic and luckiest haul of all time, it is the transformation of these little robots that impressed me most. I just loved how the nose cone connected to the back of the plane in robot mode.
