Bonds would be more profitable

But seriously, you hit the nail right on the head!

I remember the time 17 to 18 years ago, you can buy TFs (G1) in flea markets and other out of place sources without selling a body part. Now, its like, been turned to a business with too much profit! Sure profit is good because it help create a market for replacing parts or even giving you the ability to purchase stuff on ebay ( loose most often I get) but those AFa whatchamacalit, wtf? Are they running a museum or something?

Starting to remind me of Toy Story 2.

AFA stuff is crazy. The only possible reason I can see with that stuff is for future collectors wanting either a pristine version of something to keep, or possibly some dude with way too much money to open as if it were mint. Gotta say though, there's something to be said for pre-owned, opened stuff.

If for example, a joint is a bit tight (or loose), or some paint is applied sloppily, a good seller will tell you if you're thinking about buying it, or at least show pictures of it. A sealed TF in the package, in vehicle mode...well it might not even have the right head attached to it.
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn and any Webdiver toys.

WANNA HEAR SOME BUUUUUUUUULSHEEAT?

Here's 3 examples of toys I bought brand new mint in sealed box, off Ebay;

ALTERNATORS OPTIMUS PRIME:
The engine gun have two right sides. So, in gun mode, that gun look like ass.

25th Anniversary Special Edition Unicron:
The Kranix minicon have two right feet.

Henkei Classic Optimus Prime:

Each times, I cannot return it to the seller (No way I'm paying the shipping again) and Hasbro is no help. Also, the seller cannot tell if there's some factory mistakes without opening the box and they sure will never open it.

So, yeah. The advantage to buy an open toy from a competent seller is that you are 100% sure of what you get. There's always a risk to get a factory mistake and each times, it suck ballz. Especially if the toy was very expensive, liket that Classic OP. (90$).

I got a Classics Cyclonus with two right hands. Actually works out better that way, TBH, because the actual left hand doesn't have a peg hole. This error means he can hold his gun in either hand.

I can think of many valid (for me) reasons to buy a toy and keep it sealed:
-Already own it and just want to display what the toy looked like in the package.
-The nostalgia of having a toy from your favorite line still sealed, remembering going to the store as a child and seeing hundreds of these boxes and ruffling through them. Just holding the package can be entertaining.
-Opening a TF for the first time is better than buying a used one any day. You might keep it in the box just so one day when you can't afford the latest figure you can enjoy opening this one you bought years ago
-If you're just one of those people who like to pretend you're managing a museum and you have this piece of history.

And of course, buying one in the box over a used one goes along with knowing that all the joints will be stiffer, no scratches, etc.

Toy Story 2 guys.

The first paragraph said it all. When I see a G1 on ebay still in the box and graded, it's like Taps is playing in the background each time. These toys were meant to be taken out of the package and played with. They are 2 (or sometimes more) toys in one package for Cybertron's sake!....

I have about 50/60 sealed pieces, mostly the Hasbro Commemorative and the TFC collections. Why ? I never intend on opening them or selling them, they're displayed sealed and I intend to keep them that way. Again, my preference.
I have my G1, Encore and eBay toys for display & play purposes .
I have a few select pieces that i also keep sealed such as Henkei Wildrider & the Henkei Exclusives. The movie, animated and Classics toys sit out of packets on cabinets. I really don't subscribe to "let the toys out" mentality, If I want to keep whatever sealed, I will, if I want to display it I will.

:P That would be me.

In a somewhat ironic twist, I do keep sealed GEEWUNS. These are doubles (Within GEEWUN this is EXPENSIVE). All the other G1´s are boxed, but the Japanese made their boxes so that I can open them whenever and put them back, no visual change. My Masterforce collection is fully boxed, but I can play with the toys.

Why do I do it? Obviously not for the cashola, but the toystore feel of it. Like sitting in a HUGE pile of unopened presents.

I guess that works, for boxes... In the case of Deluxes... Well that can't be done. I prefer looking at my TFs on a shelf, displayed in a group, and not alone in their box. Even if i wanted to keep MISB stuff, I'll have already ran out of space.

Weapon: Indepentently Targetable Particle Beam Cannons
I open ALL of mine.

I dont buy toys as an "investment" for resale value...I buy them for the nostalgia factor to remind me of the good 'ol days of playing for hours with my favorite toys. I put them on display up on shelves in my man room (okay, boy room :-P) in battle stances, fight scenes, whatever...and occasionally pull them down, play with them, re-pose them, and put them back up on the shelf.

While I do keep most of the 'hard-side' boxes (as opposed to the deluxes and such that only come on cardstocks), this is just for packing and shipping in the event that I ever move. Yellowing, fading, and the mythical "plastic rot" i here people dreading is fictitious at the least, slightly annoying at most. Plastic sits in landfills for decades without breaking down, and that is being exposed to the elements, heat, rain, etc. Sitting up on a shelf in a nice clean home these things should be virtually non-existance, and I find the people who worry about them a tad over-obsessed.

I do know a couple people who do this as kind of an income booster, but they normally buy them in lots (i know one guy who bought 15 MP Prime's in order to re-sell them at mark-up later), and there is almost no personal nostalgia involved for them. They see it as a business opportunity only...and I don't really see how anyone could have a "half-and-half" compromise. If you buy a toy for nostalgia value, but still worry about what shape it will be in in 15 years so you can maybe make $50 or so when you sell it...well, I don't really see that as real "nostalgia" if you are willing to part with it later.

Besides, most of us have all seen original G1 toys that STILL sell for hundreds of dollars even in relatively bad shape. I saw a G1 Megs at a swap meet a couple years ago, box was all crushed and dilapitated (sp?) and Megs was missing all of his extra parts (was only the figure and the arm-sight-cannon piece), and he had some serious rusty spots. I laughed to myself when I saw the price tag stuck on it...the guy asking $175 for him. To my surprise, going back the next weekend, I saw that he was gone, the guy had found a buyer for him.

For me it depends on the suitability of the packaging for display.

Masterpiece TRU figs look great on display in box are rarely boast transformations I feel the need to mess around with.

G1 Sixshot on the other hand is far more impressive to transform than watch collect dust on shelf. It's also hard to fly boxes around the room and yell "pyoo-pyoo"!

If you keep it in the box you only have half a transformer. You cant play with it, you cant transform it, you cant pose it, the boxes take up a lot more space than the actual toy inside of it. If u buy a transformer in box and its in vehicle mode then just buy a car, jet or truck that looks like it, the joints and gimmicks it was given get wasted. And if its robot mode then buy a robot.

*slow clap* Well said, friend. Well said. But I am able to understand why someone would wish to keep their transformer in its original packaging.

I open all of them. ive tried keeping a few MIB or MOC, but i always breakdown and open them. Ill get a few and transform them while i watch tv or am bored.

i used to keep the boxes and cards but it was taking up way to much space so now i get rid of them as well.

If I had a couple of trestle tables I am sure I could get away with being a trader at a con somewhere with the amount of MISB and MOC Transformers I have! ;)

I have recently turned 40, Im married and due our first child in February, so my wife would absolutely love it if I was to sell everything to put in the baby fund? Hows about Scotty dont!

I fully intend to open them, but space to display is tight. I have been shuffled out of the spare bedroom into my office which is stuffed full of shelves containing tubs of random desktop PC components (I used to build them for friends), USB music equipment (I wanna be a music producer  ), thousands of bagged & boarded comic books (fanboy turned collector), my desk and Detolf cabinet for figures on display!

I dont play with my Transformers although my friends take the piss claiming I run around the carpet with them, brummm, brummmmmm!! I dont collect anything G1, only Alternators/Classics/Generations/Masterpiece/Prime and some of the nicer older figures from lines such as Universe/RiD/Unicron Trilogy/Movie.

Not having the space to display everything until we move house the majority of my Classics/Movie/Alternators and all of my Prime are boxed up in my office waiting patiently for their moment! :-(

That said, I have gone out of my way to create my Neo-Classics line-up for The Wreckers (http://www.seibertron.com/energonpub/the-wreckers-whats-your-neo-classics-line-up-t88096.php) so I have dug out my respective Classics which are stil MISB ready to open, transform and display. As other folk have mentioned, itll be like Christmas/Toy Store sweep as there must be around 8 or 9 to open!! :P

In time, get 'em open!! :D

Me too, sometime, I bought some TF that I planned to keep sealed. If it was a toy I didnt already had, sooner or later, I always end up opening them.

Movie Scorponock, even if that display inside that Desert Attack box look awesome, your days as a sealed possession are numbered. If no one but you soon, I'm going top crack you open!

95% of the time, my packaging comes right off. It's pretty rare that I like the packaging so much to warrant not cracking it open. Plus, I really like being able to pick up a figure and play with it as I'm walking around my house.

Opening is a must for me MOST of the time. Bots posed in groups is far more appealing to me than stacked in boxes. I have managed to keep SDCC Bruticus sealed only because I have the standard ones displayed in front of the box. Same story with SDCC RiP Cliff with FE Terrocon Cliff. My rule of thumb is to keep boxes (not cards) on anything I spend $40 or more on, unless it's a dear character or impressive packaging. I've still managed to keep TRU MP Optimus & Tcracker sealed, but I don't think they have much time left that way. ;)

Aside from Botcon/TFCC figures, I've grown a pretty large MIB collection due to space limitations. I don't like keeping things in the packages, but there's been a bunch of stuff I've bought, knowing that in this age of distribution, or, "distribution" I may never see it again in stores. Things like MPs, I keep the boxes for those times I rotate the figures out of my displays. eHobby stuff, I keep those boxes too. Hell, I've bought bagged Botcon figures and kept the bags for them....

"T.M.I"?
What does that mean?

Anyway, when I transform instead of reading while pooping, I never take a big one that is super complicated or one that involve lots of part-forming. Beside, every times, 3 cats also want to be petted.

Now, just imagine the fun you'll have with a sealed box. You have the box in hand and you just stare at it, reading the blip of texts on it instead of a newspaper. Even then, you wouldnt dare to even do that because that precious sealed box should stay at the bottom of the closet, in the dark, alone. It MUST remain mint! So much fun to be had with a sealed box.

My blanket statement for collecting toys - I collect what I want, how I want.

It's was mainly used on my uncle who (still) thinks me pathetic for collecting Transformers since I'm in my twenties (yet, oddly enough, he doesn't comment on my tin toy collection. Go figure). Comments are few and far between these days, so I rarely have use for it anymore, but it still applies.

I have MISB and I have loose figures. I go in and out of phases on how I want to approach my collection, but I definitely have more opened figures than I do sealed.

I realize some people are admittedly opposed to leaving figures in boxes but, well, I'm not. It doesn't have anything to do with resale value (though I'll admit the concept is there, if only because my dad sometimes brings it up on a whim since he's a collector of a variety of things - none of which he's sold, but he keeps the concept of value shove in the back of his head), it's more to do with the fact that I like the box art and how it accents certain figures. It makes them nice display pieces. I'm not so anal that I'd cry if a box were destroyed, but I do take care not to wreck them if I can help it. I just won't have a heart attack if something happens - earthquake, toddler niece, water, etc

So basically (I'm not harping on anyone, just saying) I'll collect in whatever manner I care to. Just because I don't open the boxes doesn't mean I don't appreciate, love or value the toy's existence any less than those who do. I just have a different way of appreciating them than some.

Motto: ""Watch as I carve this tree, so that I can rebuild this land""
Weapon: Particle Beam Cannon
I'll open mine, but I try not to ruin the box (open deluxe toys from the bottom is the best way ;) ) I like to have the boxes, to display them at times. Especially at the moment because I'm looking for a good shelf for them. :D
After 5 years of avoiding it, the toys are reeling me back in

Collection for 2012
