Unfortunately, this is one reason I collect. As much as I hate the fact that I do it, it is easy for me to give into this kind of 'peer pressure'. It's too easy for me to jump on the bandwagon of whatever is a hot collectors item at the time.

Indeed. I frequently stop collecting G1 for whatever line is 'hot' right now. So it's not all nostalgia and warm childhood safety.

I've heard of that game. And I do appreciate life. That doesn't mean I have to like the world.

Yea, but you just go around disliking things you don't understand. Go find a mentor, join a dojo, play a sport, something...

You need some good buddies who will rough you up when you get all emo.

No but you are an attention seeker.

How many threads is it now that have gone off topic to talk about your aversion to life?

Yeah ... i'm sick of it. Back on topic please. And let's avoid talking about Sly's view of life and the world from now on.

It's not been me bringing it up. The last thing I want is too much attention.

Well, anyway there are reasons to like the world.......I finally got Thundercracker! Freaking awesome. I can't believe how good this figure looks. I am really impressed. Thrust, Dirge, Starscream......wow, I can't believe how amazing these darned seekers are in the Generations line. Hasbro did a good job with these.

That is why I like collecting. I like the fact that we have the opportunity to get some really good stuff out there. I like the fact that Hasbro is doing a rather great job of bringing certain parts of my childhood to life by making some amazing figures that represent the G1 characters unbelieveably well. Everyone collects something. I collect TFs, guitars, zippo lighters, and several other things. It is what it is. :D

We collect because it's stress relieving, entertaining, showing-off, reminiscing memories, and for personal satisfaction. For other it may be an outlet for their negative feelings. I know there are still a lot of reasons why we collect.

I haven't played in forever but back when I was in a band and playing guitar, there were only two choice for anyone who was serious about music: Gibson or Fender depending on your tastes.

Has that changed?

It's still pretty much the same, but there are a few exceptions.

A: Gibson. I've got two of them - a standard SG and a Blueshawk.

Actually thinking about the question why do we collect? Hmm that is a difficult question to answer. I guess some people collect the transformers toys because they think they will be collectable items. Why do I collect them? Well because I think they are awesome and I would love to have them and I definitely love (even at my age - which is not very young) transforming them from robot to vehicle and back again.

Oh, and another reason... when I have kid(s), they'll have some pretty cool toys to play with.

i collect because i love robots. would i collect other robot toys if i could? yes. do i? nope. i also love every transformers character that comes with the toy. each one is a story and you have a story of how you got the transformer. plus people ask me: what do you like most, werewolves or vampires? i say....NEITHER BECAUSE BOTH ARE STUPID! (no offense to anyone who does like them) point being loving and collecting TFs is something different. people never suspect it. your doing something some average person would never do because they would think its weird, stupid or childish. we dont care, its who we are.

I never get Socratic about my collection, but I do have a few categories to offer.

Simple answer, two parts:

1. Because I choose to.
2. Because I can.

Nostalgic answer:

1. Never lose your dinosaur.

Technical answer:

1. I love engineering, sculpture, sci-fi, robots, and vehicles.

Sociological answer:

1. Benign avarice, personal eccentricity.

Psychological answer:

1. It's an ersatz form of conquest.

That's about all I can come up with for now.

I'm not being a smartass here, I'm interested in what you think! Share your thoughts.

I always had a huge fascination with robots.

I also loved jungle animals & dinosaurs so merging them with robots is pure heaven.

These days I collect transformers because I'm fascinated how the toy technology gets more advanced as the years pass.

Personally Transformers toys appear to be the most complicated & advanced mass released toys worldwide.

I take apart several TF toys to do parts swaps between repeative recolors. Often times I wonder how do the factory machines get all those pressured springs/gears lined up inside those inner transformers toys. Examples some of the ROTF stuff like leader sized jetfire's chest assembly area with all the gears/springs. other examples CR/Rid Gigatron with all his pressured inner springs & gears. I OFTEN imagine the factory floors littered with pressured springs that flew out of the toys due to the machines being off & not properly adjusted that day.

I collect transformers these days because I view each new mold as a PURE WORK OF ART. since each mold is different,I think of them as paintings that were created to be treasured & enjoyed. THOSE TAKARA DESIGNERS LIKE THAT GUY WHO LOVES TO DO ALL THE NEW MOLD starscream toys, should add their signature names along with the company logo/patent year.

I haven't enjoyed the Media side of Transformers for a extremly long time. 1986 Season 3 & the 1986 movie were my all time favorites. every other TF cartoon afterwards has been a huge dissapointment.
the Cybertron came close to being awesome.

I only enjoy the micheal bay movies for the CGI robots scenes. I could care less about the annoying humans & plots.

As far as the comics goes. looking back the marvel G-1 TF comics had more bad stories/arc compared to great ones. G-2's comic was okay.

DW TF comics I really liked.

The IDW TF comics seem more miss than hit. the 2010 year was my least favorite TF comic year of all time. the 2011 IDW TF comic years seems to have a bit of hopeful great stories/arcs & better art.

As far as TF video games goes,I stopped playing video games around 1988. so can't comment on this area.

as far as buying TF clothes & bedroom accessories like sheets, curtains,THIS JUST ISN'T MY THING. I prefer to be a Secret TF fan. I don't like wearing a huge bulls eyes on my TF shirt that says: hey look i'm a Transformers fan.

As far as fan interaction goes. for me,it's always been more miss than hit. My ideas & preferences within the TF hobby often clash more than agree. often times my ideas are more different than others. recent example,my desire to have 10 MP TF toys released per year.

Since this is a TF "WHY do I collect" thread. I'll list my top 1 favorite TF toys from each TF toy line.

Generation one 1980's---Jetfire

Generation one Japanese takara----Overlord

Generation 2---Laser Rod optimus Prime

Animated---Leader sized Megatron

Classics 1.0-- deluxe rodimus

Classics 2.0--deluxe cyclonus

Botcon--- Deathsauras

Movie verse----all the leader sized optimus prime toys.

alternators---Mirage,who I often like to refer to as Rid Sideburn.

Masterpiece--currently Rodimus.
