...Why?

It must be something to do with his transformation or functional design, 'cause aesthetics wise I think he's one of the coolest Decepticons ever made (I sadly don't own the toy, so I can't really comment...But I rather like him)

It looks great, it's just a fiddly mess that doesn't peg together well...or at all sometimes... #-o

Oh. I see. Is it a problem of loose pegs? A bit of varnish or super glue might fix that if it is.

No no... he's too complicated for his size class, like Universe Galvatron. Think of the complexity of RotF Leader Optimus Prime compressed into a Deluxe-sized figure.
The resident Rewind... well, half of one

Looking for:
- TR Furos (Hardhead's head) and Crashbash (lost him :()
- PotP Punch head
- TR Galvatron right arm (the gun one)
- CW Brake-Neck/UW Wildrider, CW Offroad
- TR Twinferno & Grotusque
- Greenlight, Lancer and PotP Elita-1 (plus repro Victorion hands and feet?)

*Remembers that I am younger than most of the other posters on the forum, and that toy complexity has gone considerably up since the days of the 80s*

Oh.

I'm gonna buy him anyway. He just looks so damn amazing that I don't care if I shred my fingers transforming him.

I actually enjoy the more complicated figures more than the easier ones, but I must draw the line when the complexity hinders the stability of a toy. :)

The irony is I was actually mocking the knee-jerk "(insert product here) was better back in my day, you're all spoiled with this modern crap!" reactions...

I'd like to nominate Smokescreen for worst Beast Hunters figure thus far. There's complexity, and then there's everything getting in everything else's way and not pegging together properly without having to screw with it for fifteen minutes. It looks good in both modes, but going between them...

I whole heartedly disagree. He may have a bit of bits-running-into-other-bits when you're folding his arms and shoulders down to form the top of the car, but it's not -that- bad. And transformation to robot mode is smooth as silk.

I may change my mind after transforming him a few more times and getting used to him, but I just got him today, and my intial impression is that he's a pain to transform, and thus not a whole lot of fun.

The trick to getting him back to vehicle mode is to keep the legs and faux chest hinged downward, peg it in last. Get the doors in place and make sure the windows are hinged up all the way. There's a little give in the windows between where they can hinge to and where they actually peg in at (as in, they don't peg in hinged ALL the way up). It's not a huge margin, but it's there and it's important. Fold the shoulder struts (the parts that hide under the shoulder pads in robot mode) all the way closed, then peg the arms together with half of the hood hinged to where it is in robot mode and the other half ready to be pegged in for car mode.

It's fair to say that things get in the way of each other at that point, but it's not -that- bad. It's two minutes of fiddling at best if you screw it up. Do reserve judgement about a transformation until you've actually spent some time with it, eh? ;)

Oh, something that bears noting, which I just found out doing it myself. It's important that the upper arm sections are oriented with the outside of the ball joint facing up. There's a minor clearance issue if it's facing sideways.

Have I now had enough time with Smokescreen that I may delare him a pain in the ass to transform? Because experience hasn't made it much better. And this is a toy that might wind up in the hands of children! What Mensa-level kids did Hasbro playtest this thing with?

Beast Machines: Deluxe Optimus Primal
RID: Optimus Prime (puzzleformers suck).
Alternators: Optimus Prime (robot mode looks like garbage).
Titanium: War Within Megatron
Masterpiece: Starscream (first release)
Armada: The entire line, but the Optimus Prime superbrick mode really stands out.
Energon: Optimus Prime (I can't believe SentinelA picked Shockblast over this). It's like they're having a contest between the Armada team and the Energon team to design the worst Optimus toy.
Cybertron: Highwire (but the Kicker fig compensated for this)
Classics: DVD 2-pack Optimus Prime (another one he got right).
2007 Movie: Megatron (alt mode was just lazy).
Universe: Cheetor
ROTF: Optimus Prime (leader class - too bad, the first movie toy ruled so hard).
TF: Animated: Megatron (much like 2007 movie Megatron - lazy).
Prime:Beast Hunter Optimus Prime. Holy, people, STAY AWAY from this fig.
DOTM: Optimus Prime (Look! I have wheels for sleeves!)
Generations: WFC Jazz

I noticed that Optimus Prime came out quite a lot (mainly due to design and engineering issues) on this list. I think it's because Hasbro/Takara knows that the Optimus fans/collectors/worshipers will buy an Optimus toy regardless of its shoddy quality (whether it is the design or the QC on the production of the toy itself). Too bad, because we have seen some really awesome Optimus figs in the last 10 years (2007 Movie, Masterpiece, and Cybertron)that kicks so much ass that can be felt on the moon.

Most lines don't have any figures that stand out for being bad, so I'll just go over the one's that do.
Alternators: Skids. I've never been able to get his altmode to stay together.
Masterpiece: Megatron. It's nearly impossible to not break something while transforming it. His cannon is so oversized that it ruined the shoulder joint on mine.
Cybertron: Soundwave. Nothing stays together in altmode, and he has so much kibble in robot mode that you can't do anything with it.
Classics: Grimlock. His robot arms don't attach to anything, and he really should have been a voyager.
2007 Movie: Skorponok. Worst. Robot. Mode. Ever.
Universe: Ironhide. Awful design, nothing works in robot mode.
ROTF: Soundwave. Nothing attaches in his altmodes. It' just a loose mess of panels and robot arms.
TF: Animated: It's a tie between Swoop and voyager Megatron. Swoop's back panel won't stay attached in either mode. Megatron has a dull robot mode and a "what the hell is that?" altmode.
Prime: Airachnid, obviously.
Generations: FoC Jazz. Disproportionate and hollow robot mode

At least with Sideswipe I could give hid BFG to another figure like I did with Ultra Magnus' BFS. Jazz just comes with a dinky little pea shooter.

The funniest thing is that gun is advertised on the packaging with a BIG and FLASHY "COME WITH THE GUN!!!!!" Remember when we said that the reduced sizes of the figures in DotM were due to the Mechtech weapons?
FOC Jazz hit the bottom of the barrel by being the most tiny and hollow deluxe ever... the the gun he came with is one of the tiniest ever too. I wonder if FOC Jazz was a way for Hasbro to test how far they can be cheap until people cry "bullshit"?

Still, FOC Jazz is not a bad figure by himself. He just feel really very cheap.

In my delusional world, toys should at least have the option of going with the weapon they come with. Thus, to me, Sideswipe is worse than Jazz. Well, that, and his weird eyes. Would it have killed them to paint those things?

That said, neither is as bad as the FoC Ravage/Steeljaw mold. A gappy mess hindered by a gimmick that doesn't really work. Also, no aticulation, but that's essentially true of all the Data Disc guys, so I'll let that part slide.

I was okay with getting Sideswipe over Jazz. Looks nicer, comes with a BFG. Admittedly, I am still considering trying to get a squarer head for him and painting it red, to use him as Lightspeed, but still, at least he doesn't look like a ghost like see-thru Jazz.

noticed Super Megatron calls RID Optimus the worst. Am surprised, and disagree. Yes, he's something of a puzzle, but looks great in all modes, combines with Magnus to form one of the coolest TFs ever, and looks a bit like Blaster. In a line with over 50% repaints and the relatively poor QC on the Car Robot brothers, (Prowl is the one who has bits that couldn't be painted, and where some of the vehicle shell is prone to cracking, right?) and I'd say Prime fares pretty well.

FOC Jazz hit the bottom of the barrel by being the most tiny and hollow deluxe ever... the the gun he came with is one of the tiniest ever too. I wonder if FOC Jazz was a way for Hasbro to test how far they can be cheap until people cry "bullshit"?

That's at least partly the reason. Hasbro might have started out shrinking the TF's to provide plastic to the mechtech weapons, but later decided that it might be profitable to continue with this size even without the BFG's.

-Kanrabat- wrote:Still, FOC Jazz is not a bad figure by himself. He just feel really very cheap.

My biggest problem with Jaz is that his disproportionate body was caused by his simplified transformation. If they had kept his transformation more accurate to his in-game CG, and we KNOW it can be done because it's almost identical to WFC Bumblebee's toy, he would have been so much more proportionate.

As he is, the sides of his alt mode's trunk now go to his forearms, when they should have been made up of his lower legs. The front wheels which should have gone to the forearms now stay where they are, partially obscured by the alt mode's side panels.

And then there's the shameful lack of paint apps on him.

But as disproportionate as he is, he's still a "serviceable" figure, if you give him a good coat of paint and weathering. As many of the customized Jazz figs have proven, he can look good with some paint on him.
