WoW quest glitch is pissing me off

I recently caved in and decided to play the "you can't go past level 20" trial version of World of Warcraft. I have an undead character whose "put a leash around a fish and bring it to the crazy guy in the attic in Cold Hearth Manor to keep as a pet" quest is bugged. Specifically, I have two leash skills in my skill bar thing (no idea how the second one got there), but they're both grayed out as if I've already completed the quest... even though I haven't. I tried teaming up with a guy who hadn't done the quest yet, then walked him through it, but I didn't get credit for his capture... what's the point of inviting or joining groups if you don't share credit for quests?

Note that this was AFTER I permanently lost the Gaudy Winter Vest on another character whose quests got all fuxx0red because of a crash. The Gaudy Winter Vest was only available THIS Christmas, so I will never, ever be able to get another one unless I buy it on eGay or whatever.

I'd complain about this on the official Battle.net forums, except that doing so would require upgrading my account. Yes, I'd have to pay for the full game to complain about a problem that's present in the starter version, because apparently Blizz lost its soul and common sense some time during the past ten years.

Anyway, do you guys have any tips on how to get my stupid fish quest working again, without abandoning and re-accepting (which would be marked on my permanent record, because some game-designers are just dicks like that)?

First off Id'e start by watching what type up there.
Hell, I got a warning the other day for using the G word...
Id'e edit alot of that before a MOD comes in here and throws flaming balls of PM WARNING sauce at you.
As for the glitch....
What level is your character? If it's close to twenty, maybe you need to purchase the game to complete it. Other then that, I have no clue. You may as well buy it. I mean, that way you can complain to people who can actually help you, and you'll be able to experience the full game.

We don't like pseudo-mods ...

But as far as the problem goes? No idea. Installed the trial version once myself, but couldn't be bothered waiting who knows how many days it was going to take to install updates. (That's when I was on a slow crappy connection one step up from dial-up).

So frankly, be different, find another game to play, go against the herd.

There's a "G" word now? Damn. I thought I knew every curse word in the book.

Edit: Oh, nevermind I see...

No, I'm just trying to keep his PM box from exploding and lagging the crap out of his computer. After Warcraft, I don't think it can take much more of a beating.

One of my favorite sayings: You get what you pay for.

Another of my favorite sayings: Maybe you should look to see if anyone else is having the same problem before you start a flood of complaints. Seeing as that's a starting area, or at least very close to it, it would make sense that a few people would have found and fixed the problem in the past seven years.
