I love that scene!!

But as far as a "prequel" I don't know.. It kind of kills some of the things that have been established as well as screwing the "Wolverine origins" movie..

No one seems to know if this is a prequel, reboot or some kind of re-imagining using some of the elements from the other movies (ravens look, etc..)

It was James Bondish and fun though.

*edit*
It actually seems like a reboot to me..

I think, considering it had the exact same first scenes as the first movie, it can be considered a prequel to at least X-Men and X2.

I think its possible that the writers acknowledged the first two movies as the movies that are generally loved, while Wolverine and X-Men 3 are both generally disliked and (in X-Men 3s case) widely regarded as having suffered from dodgy writing and decided to roll with it. There are no inconsistencies between this and the first two movies.

Wolverine and X-Men 3 however just are 100% incompatible. Emma Frost is completely different in First Class, Xavier and Magneto's situation makes the starting of X-Men 3 impossible, Xavier's cameo in Wolverine could not have happened, Scott Summers was seen during the Cerebro search at an age that cannot work with his age in Wolverine Origins, etc.

Inconsistencies were very much evident in the 1st movie, when they are showing Scott and Jean as part of the 1st class. The new movie is stupid as the characters are crap. How can Havok and Scott be brothers when Havok is about 16 in 1967 and Cyclops is about 15 in Wolverine which is set decades later? The fact that they actually picked Angel Salvatore as a character in the film is ridicious. Her character sucks. As does Darwin. I can think of many other X-men that they could have used over those flakes. The new movie is a rental at best.

Anyone who thinks First Class is better than Wolverine is off their meds.....

I think its better than Wolverine. Mind you I own all 4 movies on DVD or Blue Ray and am planning to get this one on Blue Ray when its released.

Scott and Jean are part of the first class in Xavier's School. At the time o this movie, Xavier;s house is still not set up as an institute, and yes in the comics both Scott and Jean are part of the original X-Men team, so that is in fact very consistent.

Obviously Havok is no longer his brother, as I said before it looks like they may turn him into his father or maybe some other relative.

So they change it around a bit, that does not mean the movie is bad. Just that it doesn't follow the comics as strictly as it could have, but what movie does? Yes Angel and Darwin are weird choices, but they really don't detract from the movie at all. Darwin is killed almost immediately after being introduced, and Angel barely says anything the entire movie.

Personally I think Shaw worked fine, sure I don't know much about him, but I think his powers make sense in the movie's setting, and his usage of them. I saw no real issue with them.

Now if you are going to complain about Havok and Cyclops, perhaps you could also look at Origins: Wolverine an complain about the fact Sabertooth has never been Wolverine's brother, it has been said he could be his father at some point, but never his brother in the comics.

Also Emma Frost in that movie is Silverfox's sister? when did that happen in the comics, and SilverFox's powers aren't remotely what they show in the movie.

So if anything Wolverine is less accurate than this one.

Two complaints about it.

1) Beast's makeup was horrible. He didn't look real enough to be believable. Bring back Kelsey Grammar.

2) The actor's weren't allowed to use accents. Moira is a Scottish character w/ no Scottish accent. Professor X w/out the voicing of Patrick Stewart? Bleh. The list can go on but those are the two most obvious.

You seem to have Shaw confused with Leyland, a different member of the Hellfire Club whose powers were gravity control. Shaw has more or less the same abilities as he does in the comics, he can just do a lot cooler things with them.

Like, for example, Comic Shaw just got a physical strength increase and wouldn't be able to push the energy back into people.

I think you're right, I might have confused the two. If so, I apologize, it's been a while since I've read the comic story.

And I thought Wolverine was better than First Class, not counting the Deadpool fail at the end.

I must be off my meds then. As are like every critic in existence.

And I don't recall it EVER saying Cyclops and Jean were his first students, it was just assumed as they were the ones seen in the movie. I also think hating on them for choosing Angel and Darwin as characters is very good. I mean, Wolverine chose John Wraith and Bolt for characters, that's pretty obsolete right there. The movie's just like toying with new things and I think both Darwin and Angel were better then their comic counterparts.

Re: X-Men First Class

Postby Supreme Convoy » Sun Jun 19, 2011 5:01 pm

I finally saw X-Men: First Class last night. The major cameo was spoiled for me last week. Oh well. It was still a treat to see Wolverine.

I was surprised how much I loved the movie. The trailers & commercials didn't do it for me. The Photoshopped posters didn't win me over either. I found it weird that the film didn't have a multimedia marketing frenzy like Slurpees or toys.

I love that the movie didn't feel like the previous installments. It felt very much like a James Bond movie, most obviously whenever Sebastian Shaw was on screen. Who knew Kevin Bacon could be such an awesome villain?

Things that I loved...
-Magneto. I thought X-Men Origins: Magneto could've been cool and was disappointed when that wasn't happening. I didn't realize that those ideas were incorporated in this movie. He's my favorite character in the movie. I also nerded out that he had his comic accurate helmet with that fork on the forehead. And the scene at the very end with the Nazi coin is amazing. I'm shocked that the filmmakers were able to get away with such a gruesome scene.
-As I mentioned above, I love Sebastian Shaw as a Bond villain.
-Erik being responsible for Charles' paralyzed legs. I always thought Magneto was responsible in the comics but apparently not. That part of the movie was a real shocker for me and it totally works.
-The movie wasn't jam packed with endless cameos like X-Men 3 or Wolverine.
-Of all the students, I thought Hank McCoy was the best. Really great character.
-Kinda wished we had more scenes with Darwin.

A few nerd observations that hopefully someone could answer...
-Sebastian Shaw was absorbing the nuclear reactor. What happened to all that energy when he was killed? Or was he stopped before he could absorb enough deadly force?
-Was the public aware of the mutant involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis or was there a cover up?

**SPOILERS**

The best of the 5 X-Men movies (counting Wolverine, I did like that one).

No questions asked.

The scene when Erik kills Shaw with the coin is horrendously gruesome, yet awesome.
