Finally got my set applied. Looks awesome! definitely putting these guys with G1 cast. They're not that important to IDW anyway, just background characters. So this set is very nice.

One complaint. the chrome gun for hoist.... that **** is freaking tight as hell. arggg people should really account for Chrome thickness. Felt like I was going to rip the fist off shoving that thing in there.

How does the Takara set end up looking on the Hasbro figures? I got shafted for the set I wanted, and I'm now wanting to know if the alternate set is at all worth it.

I posted some pics earlier in the thread with the chrome version. Do you guys want another pose to see a better comparison? I have the Hasbro bots and ended up with the chrome set even though I ordered the brushed aluminum. It wasn't worth it to me to try to switch them out.

I have the FP G3 trailer that came with a bunch of chrome weapons, so these guys fit in nicely with my collection...

Shiny! I ordered the very first version, was contemplating switching to the chrome set, but ultimately didn't make the change. For those of you that got yours, are they as shiny as mine here? Or did you get the brushed aluminum look? I'm not complaining, but I am curious which version I ended up with.

Image
Also of note, there was no additional paint on Hoist's wings; they are one solid color. I can't tell if I like this more or less than the original painted protos. I might take a silver sharpie to them for some more detail. They are fine this way, but I kinda liked the original color shots. What do y'all think? Image

When I was deciding to buy either the chrome or non-chrome set the only thing I worry about is the color of the orange plastic not matching the Hasbro's Hoist. But like the pictures hat Aggie shows it matches spot on. Besides the wings having no silver paint and the chrome weapons there is no other differences (that I can see, correct me if I'm wrong). I also prefer the wings to be all orange, where was the silver paint on the wings inspired from anyway (was it on the G1 toy)?

Also on Chrome, When has it become fashionable to hate on Chrome? I find it really strange that everyone is after the silver painted ones on this set and the chrome set being less desirable? (Also people hating on the Chrome on Generations Jetfire) What's going on? People used to love chrome which (I thought one of the reasons made the Henkei figures more desirable). What's going on? Chrome is suddenly tacky?

For me at least, it is not a matter of chrome looking better or worse, it is being consistent with the figure in hand.

The US releases don't have chrome on the projectors or other weapons, so it looks a little out of place on them.

If I had the Japanese releases I'd want the chrome look and I DO prefer it. I just don't like these molds enough to pay import prices.

As far as the paint on Hoist's wings, I personally think it looks better. It breaks up the wall of orange a little. It is not G1 or anything, but as these are classics, not MPs, a little creative license comes into play.

Makes sense. But I don't believe the takara versions have any chrome either.

As a rule, I definitely prefer metallics over chrome; I believe they help make figures look more cohesive. Random chrome, and in the case of Henkei, random colored-chrome, draws attention to the fact that the rest of the figure isn't chromed.

There are obviously exceptions - MP-10's chromed parts are well-placed, and make sense given the alt mode. Most chromed Henkei weapons are also OK, IMHO. But Henkei Cyclonus' wings, for example, seem out of place to me.

henkei chrome is on a case by case basis for me. like the datsuns, im ok with because its emulating G1. and actually the tiny bit of red chrome on smokescreens spoiler is fetching. but yeah.. theres a lot of random nonsensical chrome in henkei..

In this particular case, the chrome sticks out like a sore thumb. Not to mention the fit is gonna be tight and scary on a flimsy fist. I once had to sand off chrome on a KO electro disruptor mirage so he could hold his weapon. Then there was the igear G2 seaspray that can only hold his speargun underhand unless youre willing to file out the chrome inside the fist holes and hope it doesnt start to peel. And do I even need to mention the rocket launchers on the TFC gear of war set ? Chrome sometimes works, but not all the time.

I got my Takara Hoist and Trailcutter along with the upgrade set. I must say they look really good in bot mode with these accessories. I haven't converted them to their respective truck modes yet but I have modified how the bot modes look by fidgeting with how the chests are to give them a more G1 look (the Autobot symbols are visible and the hood is pointing straight down rather than the grill facing forward). The chrome on the gun pieces fits in well even though the silver bits on the bots are just silver metallic paint and not chrome. It makes the weapons stand out a bit more, which in my opinion is a good thing.

I think that definitely gives it more of a G1 toy look, though I'm also feeling the fat Target Wrecker from DotM, too...

I think the arm lowering is a function of bringing the hood that far down. Perhaps the arms can come up a bit more, but then they won't lock into the mirrors.

Yeah, the arms are lower because the chest is lowered like that. I don't have them locked into the mirrors. I raised them up as high as they can go.

Got my chrome set last week. I may have to try sanding the weapon for Hoist. It is crazy tight. I don't want the fist to crack. I'm not applying the stickers. Bought the Takara two pack and they look fine as is to me.

Glad you were able to find it. Other then the foolishness of them having made it so that Hoist's towing arm is off center, it isn't a bad set. Certainly helps their robot modes immensely.

I just wish they hadn't so screwed up the attachment of the towing arm... Grr... So close to perfect, otherwise!
