It will come as no surprise to people following the news on Transformers - from the Tencent game, to CybertronCon, to the recent Sun Wu Kong rumour, and all the way back to the Age of Extinction collaboration - but China is one of the biggest developing markets and audiences for the robot brand, and the general manager of Hasbro China also believes it to be the case. Speaking to China Daily, Zhang Yuchen had this to say:

The Transformers may have been around for more than three decades, but Zhang Yuchen, general manager of Hasbro China, the parent company of the brand, believes that the popularity of the iconic toy figures are just about to hit its peak, especially with four Transformers films set to hit the silver screens by 2025.

Zhang is optimistic that with the surge in nostalgia for the toys and the growing profitability of selling peripheral products from a movie in China, 2017 could very well be “the year of Transformers”.

“It’s been very exciting because over the last decade, the movie universe has given old fans something new and brought in a whole new generation of Transformers fans. That is probably one of the biggest forces driving Transformers in China,” said Zhang.

“We now expect to see explosive growth in the sale of Transformers products in China with the upcoming series of movies,” he added.

Similar trends have been noticed with the 2007 Paramount live-action movie in Western markets, too, so this is not entirely new. What is new is that the brand is looking to make a big mark in the country through media, movies, games, toys and a themed hotel in Shanghai in 2018. Remember:

The second installment of the movie franchise, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen broke the 12-year box office record set by Titanic to become the most-watched foreign movie in China.

In 2014, the fourth movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction, generated 300 million yuan ($45 million) in China, contributing to almost one-third of the global revenue. The upcoming one in the franchise, Transformers: The Last Knight, is scheduled to be released in 2017.

Seibertronians, it's review time! As reported on earlier, Machinima's Combiner Wars series now has a second episode, and it's now online! After a less than satisfactory first episode, this episode will really tell the fate of the series. Yay or Nay? Let's break it down to find out.

We start on Cybertron this time, as apposed to Caminus in the first episode, and we quickly change to a shot from what I'm assuming is Starscream, as it cuts back and we see him flying just a moment later. Starscream is on a reconnaissance mission, to gather information on the state of Cybertron. On his flyover, he witnesses some bombs going off on the surface below.

From this vantage point it almost looks like Starscream was the one that dropped the bombs, but I seriously doubt this is the case.

We pan backwards, as mentioned before, to see the Decepticon fly to a large silver building. Here again we have an issue with the choppy animation. As mentioned previously on the boards, Starscream appears really choppy, while the background moves fluidly with the camera.

Transformers News: Re: Machinima Transformers Combiner Wars Animated Series Discussion Thread
Starscream enters the building

Starscream enters the building from a top landing bay, and slowly descends using the thrusters on his feet. He lands and meets with Rodimus and, randomly, the Mistress of Flame. These bots are apart of the "Council" we've been hearing about.

They discuss the state and threat of the combiners, and how word of Computron and Menasor's fight has broken out on Cybertron. This is why there's so much unrest on the planet. Peace has been achieved between the AutoBots and Decepticons - and the council doesn't want to ruin that. They all consider using the "Enigma of Combination" for one reason or another. Rodimus wants to use it to take over an army of combiners, turning a threat into an asset. The Mistress wants to use it to wipe out all the combiners in one felled swoop. Starscream has an objection to this, as the combiners are transformers, too. Wiping them all out would be genocide. Besides, some of the Combiners have been loyal to, even fought for, the council.

Transformers News: Re: Machinima Transformers Combiner Wars Animated Series Discussion Thread
Rodimus and the Mistress of Flame are introduced to the series

The Mistress feels it isn't Starscream's place to talk about killing other transformers, given his past. We also learn in this discussion that not only is Optimus Prime in hiding, but Megatron as well.

See, now we're getting somewhere. Now we have a story to work with. One that plays with the original concept that was proposed, and not too terribly I might add. There are still some issues, such as some of the lines delivered are a bit stiff, and the mouth-movement-to-actual-voice-and-words is way off and not ignore-able, but it goes leaps and bounds above episode one. But we're not done yet.

We start to view the council meeting through the scope of a sniper rifle. It targets Rodimus, Starscream, and the Mistress. The council walks over to the Enigma of Combination, and agree they should study all it's powers before making any brash decisions.

Transformers News: Re: Machinima Transformers Combiner Wars Animated Series Discussion Thread
A sniper sets up an attack on the council

The sniper is revealed to be Windblade, set on stopping the council one way or another. She decides to fire at the Enigma, and somehow misses. She hits Starscream in the shoulder, and he falls. Another problem I have is right here. There's such a weird, delayed reaction to Starscream being shot by the rest of the council. There's a good two seconds before they really do anything. The Dialogue and sound effects become a little clunky here, as the Mistress raises the alarm and Rodimus checks on the former Decepticon.

Transformers News: Re: Machinima Transformers Combiner Wars Animated Series Discussion ThreadThe Enigma of Combination

We return to Windblade. She hears a noise behind her and immediately jumps and turns around. It's revealed to be Optimus Prime, now out of exile. He still doesn't say anything, and the episode ends pretty much on the same shot as the previous one.

Overall, episode two is a lot better than episode one. It gives us actual emotions, and actual dilemmas for the characters to face. It still suffers from that 5 minute time constraint, and trying to make people understand a whole new continuity with a new story line in 5 minutes in near-impossible. My only wish is that the past to episodes would have had a bit more of each other in them. Meaning, episode one, the hard-to-follow action-feast that it was, could have definitely used a little more (or, a lot more) story. And, on the flip side, episode two could have used a bit more battles and action. But, all in all, you're starting to win me back Machinima. That Wheeljack name-drop didn't hurt, either.

in New Real-Time Combat Strategy Game from Hasbro, Backflip Studios and Space Ape Games

BOULDER, Colo. – June 2, 2016 – Hasbro Inc., Backflip Studios and Space Ape Games today released TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS, a new real-time combat strategy mobile game featuring the most iconic characters in the Transformers universe. Published by Backflip Studios (DragonVale, SpellFall, Paper Toss) and developed by Space Ape Games (Rival Kingdoms, Samurai Siege), TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS breaks new ground for the genre, pairing authentic Transformers storytelling with fast-paced gameplay, beautiful 3D animation and hundreds of characters with diverse strengths and abilities. The game is available now for free download on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and on Google Play for Android devices.

“The Transformers franchise is one of the most iconic in the world, so it is exciting to include these characters in such a compelling mobile gaming experience,” said Julian Farrior, CEO of Backflip Studios. “We are thrilled to partner with Hasbro and Space Ape Games to launch TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS and think that Transformers fans are going to love teaming up with their favorite Autobots or Decepticons in these highly engaging mobile battles.”

Inspired by Hasbro’s “Transformers Generations Prime Wars Trilogy,” TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS players must choose to fight with Optimus Prime and the Autobots or Megatron and the Decepticons in a battle to decide the fate of planet Earth. Once allegiance has been sworn, gamers assemble a powerful team of playable characters, raid enemy bases for Energon stockpiles, and construct the Space Bridge to add reinforcements from Cybertron, all while playing in real-time against other players around the globe.

The game also features notable storytellers and voice actors from the Transformers franchise, including dialogue written by comic legend Simon Furman and voice acting from Peter Cullen, the original voice of Optimus Prime, and Frank Welker, the original voice of Megatron.

"TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS offers players an engaging storyline and incredible gameplay experience,” said Mark Blecher, Senior Vice President, Digital Gaming and Corporate Development at Hasbro. “The game harnesses the unique strengths and abilities of hundreds of characters from Transformers lore, which really helps it to stand above existing real-time combat strategy games and delivers on the Transformers promise of More than Meets the Eye.”

“With TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS, our team was dedicated to making a high quality, hand crafted experience that fans of both mobile games and Transformers will enjoy,” said John Earner, CEO of Space Ape Games. “We’re really excited about the finished product and can’t wait to help grow and support the community around this game.”

While Seibertron.com was on its way to New York and the Javits Centre (and something slipped in the internet cracks), Toy Fair 2016 has already started for Hasbro and the Transformers brand! Tuning in to the investors webcast, we have collated below all of the relevant information for fans of the giant robot franchise, including all the relevant images from the presentation shown during the event.

Note: Opinions and statements expressed during webcast may not result in actual results. Photography not allowed.

First speaker is Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner, repeating some of the information covered in the interview given in the past couple of days. Overall, good franchise revenues, despite Transformers decline.

Hasbro is intent on building on digital gaming - venturing for the first time into mobile gaming with Backflip’s Transformers: Earth Wars. More below.

Paramount: Michael Bay and Mark Wahlberg are confirmed as returning for Transformers 5, which is set to be released on June 23rd 2017. No images, but more on all this below.
Multi-brand universe with Allspark Pictures: Micronauts, G.I. Joe, ROM the SpaceKnight, M.A.S.K., Visionaries.

Transformers News: Toy Fair New York 2016 Coverage - Hasbro Webcast

Deb Thomas CFO - General investor and economy information.

John Frascotti - Hasbro Brands
The biggest share is among 12-17 year olds, but Hasbro also dedicated to special collections in the form of Star Wars Black Series, Marvel Legends, Transformers Generations, with the intention of connecting multiple generations of fans.
China Transformers Live show mentioned (more later)
Big focus was placed on the ‘modern fan survey’: identifying consumers from casual fan to superfan. Entertainment and storytelling are recognised as being crucial to the brands, fandom is not just about collecting the action figures.

Fans want to meaningfully participate - they feel a sense of ownership, loyalty, willingness to co-create, give feedback, participate in fan votes
Machinima Combiner Wars series mentioned, ‘short form entertainment’.

Digital Gaming - As above, big focus for future Hasbro strategies.
Social Reward trend driving gaming (2bn gamers in the world!)
Gaming, competing, sharing - particularly excited for the new Backflip partnership: Transformers Earth Wars.

Transformers News: Toy Fair New York 2016 Coverage - Hasbro Webcast

Transformers - Tom Warner and Jared Wade
Rich history of the brand, ‘but we’re just getting started’.
Fans are acknowledged and recognised as crucial to the brand (30% of all consumers), and they make no distinction between movie year or non-movie year: 2015 proved that.
Trypticon, the fan-vote poll winner, will be featuring in comic series, digital series, and of course, as a toy.
Transformers are expanding online presence to Instagram, Snapchat, Weibo - and we can expect more convention presence from Hasbro around the world.
Entertainment expansion: Live show in Las Vegas, Roll Out album, IDW Publishing (150+ stories planned for 2016 already).
A brief segment on trend and licensed apparel, fashion week, more clothing and accessories to be seen.
Hasbro is meaning to expand global reach, with a specific focus on China in 2016, as they establish a new blueprint - which includes the CybertronCon presence and the live show.

Entertainment focusing on multiple age brackets (yet somehow still insisting on it being all just for male fans):
Rescue Bots: Season 4 (longest running animated show for Transformers!), new theme (Race to the Rescue), new Rescue Bot Quickshadow.
Robots in Disguise: Season 2 airs in March on Cartoon Network - re-introducing the Mini-COn Weaponizers theme and gimmick. They show Power Surge Optimus Prime and NAME, which has four modes of play, automorph with minicon interaction.
Older fans: Machinima animated series, 8 episodes, 7 minutes each - Windblade’s perspective, Starscream has Enigma of Combination, fan-built first female combiner Victorion (as overwhelmingly requested by fans) will also appear in series. It sounds like the story is very close to the IDW version.
Backflip - Transformers: Earth Wars is the first part of Prime Wars trilogy.
In Fall 2016, we will have Titans Return, the second part of Prime Wars trilogy, that starts where the story of Earth Wars ends, but with a specific toy line. They point out that Titan Masters figures are compatible across entire line, and Fort Max is in showroom at Toy Fair.
[Video shown in room, not via link]

As for the cinematic universe, they reiterate the importance of the writers’ room at Paramount, and confirm Transformers 5 release on 23rd June 2017. They also revealed a Bumblebee spin-off movie for 2018, and the next movie in the main series to appear in 2019. Deadline seem to be confused about this. I’d rather trust Hasbro on that matter.

Heeeeeeeeeere’s Offroad!

Then, we have a very special treat for our listeners – an interview with none other than James Roberts of More Than Meets The Eye fame.

Transformers News: Twincast / Podcast Episode #113 "Signal to Noise"
We insisted he do the interview with the jacket on.

If you just came here for the interview, you can find it at 47:30 of the file, wherein our brave host Scotty P and devious News-Staff-slash-resident-comics-expert Va’al inherit the wind:

  1. What schemes has Roberts unleashed in his travels back to pre-war Cybertronian society?
  2. Time travel paradox?

Transformers News: Twincast / Podcast Episode #113 "Signal to Noise"
Paradox schmaradox… at least until a certain briefcase is involved.

  3. Remain in the Light was an awesome arc and powerful story, made more powerful by… prose?
  4. Roberts shows us his love for music, and for the growing More Than Meets the Eye community.
  5. Which (T-Rex) characters should we expect, which are gold, and which are big ole black holes?
  6. The Decepticon Justice Division finally returns – oh, the humanity, err *ahem* morality.

Transformers News: Twincast / Podcast Episode #113 "Signal to Noise"
Bird, Dragon, or Bird-Dragon? Why not both Zoidberg?

Our sincerest "Thank You" greetings to Mr. Roberts for lending his time to the show, and for the amazing content at that! We hope you all enjoy listening to the interview as much as we did conducting it.

After that, we return to our traditional comfort zone: upcoming Transformers toys. Images of the new, simplified Cyber Series sub-line took us all by surprise. What do we think of these 7” figures? Are they a welcome addition to the Generations fold, or more of the same? This is also the part where you learn another terrible Twincast secret: We don't know how to read good, and want to learn to do other things good too.

Transformers News: Twincast / Podcast Episode #113 "Signal to Noise"
Just don’t take away our Generations, man.

Platinum Edition Blitzwing and Astrotrain are Awesome and/or the Worst Thing Ever. Is Platinum Blitzwing an homage to Shattered Glass or Flywheels? What’s with that orange on Astrotrain? Will the Twincast crew be picking these up? While we decide, check out Seibertron’s awesome galleries of G1 Astrotrain and Blitzwing.

Transformers News: Twincast / Podcast Episode #113 "Signal to Noise"
Alpha Bravo, is that you?

In other Platinum Edition news, the long awaited Coneheads are being reissued. Now this is something the Twincast crew can get excited about… if the price is right. New Platinum set, same question: will the Twincast crew be picking these up? Better yet, can you spot the differences between these newbies and the originals? Check out Seibertron’s galleries of G1 Thrust, Dirge, and Ramjet to try your hand (or rather, your eye).

Transformers News: Twincast / Podcast Episode #113 "Signal to Noise"
Sticker shock?

We finish up the Twincast with some bragging rights. What did everyone get since the last recording?

Transformers News: Twincast / Podcast Episode #113 "Signal to Noise"
No complaints. Really!

And remember, send any complaints, rants, and cease & desist orders to IHateRazorclaw@seibertron.com before the next episode.

Don't forget, the show only gets better if you tell us how. Drop us a review on iTunes and be sure to tell us what you love, what you hate, and what you want to hear!

Not on the show to give your take? Probably not, so don't forget to keep the discussion going on the Seibertron.com Energon Pub Forums by simply replying to this post!

Got a question for the Twincast? We take all of them, we just don't take them all seriously! Leave a question in the Ask the Twincast thread and, if it makes the cut, it may get read and answered on the show.

Brimming with spectacular CG animation and endearing characters, this internationally acclaimed motion picture delivers a fun and highly entertaining movie experience for kids and the entire family.

THUNDER AND THE HOUSE OF MAGIC tells the story of Thunder, an abandoned young cat seeking shelter from a storm stumbles into a mysterious mansion owned by Lawrence, a retired magician. With all of Lawrence’s animal friends, including Jack the Rabbit and Maggie the Mouse, and a dazzling array of automatons and gizmos, you’d think this fantastically strange house wouldn’t have any vacancies. But as far as Lawrence is concerned, there’s always room for one more! Just as Thunder begins to feel at home, trouble strikes when Lawrence ends up in the hospital and the magician’s naughty nephew tries to trick him into selling the house. But Thunder and his newfound friends have a few tricks up their sleeves as they put aside their differences to defend their home with a delightfully spooky strategy.
