At this year's BotCon it was revealed that we'd be getting Deluxe Thunderwing in the Generations toy line. However that wasn't the only appearance from the G1 Pretender at this year's convention, as Energon Pub member and Transformers customizer dak entered BotCon's Customization contest with his IDW-based Thunderwing custom. You might not recognize it from the pictures, but the figure uses Cybertron Supreme Class Starscream as a base. Check out this enormous masterpiece below!

Transtopia Newsletter - August 2009

We don’t get much (or any, to my knowledge) artwork submitted that is purely photo manipulation so I thought I’d bring tljhtr1979’s contribution to your attention this month.

In ‘Battle For The Arch’ we see Megatron beckoning Optimus Prime as Prime prepares himself to leap to the challenge. In the background Bumblebee seems to be preparing to comb the wreckage of a nearby damaged building for survivors, unaware that Starscream is lurking atop a building behind him.

tljhtr1979 has used ‘09 concept Bumblebee, ’07 Movie Megatron with ROTF Prime and Starscream. Pictures of these are superimposed onto a photograph of a street scene which has had rubble and damage added.

It’s a shame that tljhtr1979 is not also a talented model painter. This picture would look better if the toys used had been painted to add that extra touch of realism, but even so, this is a very effective piece of work.

Burn was kind enough to talk to resident Transtopia Artist Psychomud this month for our Artist interview. Here’s what he had to share:

Joining us this month from Transtopia is none other than Psychomud. Residing in South Korea, Psychomud is a talented artist who took out 2nd place in this year's BotCon art contest for his rendition of Apeface, and was also crazy enough to put his hand up to be interviewed. So enthusiastic he virtually interviewed himself for me!

About me in a nutshell:
1. I live and work in South Korea for the Department of Defense.
2. I won 2nd place at Botcon for "Decepticon Apeface".
3. At Chicago Comic-con (Wizard World) 2008 - i was a featured artist at the Sketch Magazine artist alley table.
4. Did a pin-up for Skystorm Studios "Art of HellGirl" comic.
5. I have designed and illustrated logos for various organizations/sporting venues/motorcycle clubs here in South Korea - including recently designing/illustrating for the Songtan-Si Dart Association (dart league). I work for them to design the special award dart pins.
6. I DREAM to one day work for IDW - preferably but not limited to drawing transformers.
7. Right now, I am working on a "mosaic-like" 1-shot full comic written by Mike Priest and Shaun Flaughterty (which I am sure I misspelled his last name).
8. I has survived 2 wars (once as military, once as a contractor - as I am now) and if things keep going like they are - might be in a 3rd one here on the Korean penninsula. ;(
9. Although I started working hard at obtaining an illustration career late in life (36 now) - I have been drawing since 3. Not to mention, I know illustration pays next to nothing, and with my current job I will be able to retire in Thailand (at 45-ish) to live/work - hopefully long distance as an illustrator for IDW.
10. I love seibertron.com - and play HMW while I draw.

But I wasn't about to let it end there, I had to explore deeper, find out what makes Psychomud tick, or at least ask a few more questions so I look semi-professional!

Plenty more to this interview, click here to get the full scoop on Psychomud!

Alright folks, Name_Violation here, reminding you its that time again. So this month I searched high and low (not really) to find this months fanfic selection. I would like to thank everybody who submitted something this last month, I actually had something to do this time.
This months tale is set in the Movie universe, and is about humans, Autobots, and... well i should Just let everyone find out for themselves. A good read and precursor of things to come. I rate this pick 3.5 stunticon names out of 5.

Dead End
by hellkitty

Pars Prima
Bourzey Castle, Southern Syria

Ratchet ducked, instinctively, at the buzz-thump of the EMP burst. Yellow dust shook down from the large stone walls of the gateway he crouched in. Something deep in his chassis gave a sickening dropping feeling as he heard the distinctive clattering crash one of his fellow Autobots falling over. He cursed, softly.

“Ironhide,” Flareup said, her voice sick. “He’d gone ahead.”

“As usual,” Lennox added.

Prime gave a worried scowl. He wasn’t angry at Ironhide, Ratchet knew; but he’d been fighting these challenges to his authority for cycles now. It didn’t make them any easier that they were familiar. “We’ll need to disarm the EMP before we can retrieve him,” he said, calmly, changing the mission objectives instantaneously, without any outward sign of the inner distress he was feeling.

“On it,” MacCallum, one of the NEST soldiers, said, shucking his electronic equipment and grabbing a tool kit and running into the darkness of the Syrian night. The stars above gave a cold and lightless light , just enough for the humans to be able to pick out the contours of the old castle which the Decepticons had picked for their first base on Earth. Ratchet and the other bots had no choice but to wait. One EMP casualty was enough, especially on a mission with one approach route up a steep grade of shifting gravel and very little chance of a Chinook pickup. Chromia and Flareup rolled up to Prime.

“We can go on with the humans,” Chromia said.

Prime shook his head.

“We’re faster than Ironhide. We can dodge an EMP. You know that: that’s why you brought us along.”

“You might be able to dodge one, but they might have daisy chained them.” Lennox, cutting in. He was strangely protective of the cycle bots.

“So what do we do?” Flareup rolled back and forth on her wheel, anxious, peering into the night into which MacCallum had run.

There wasn't much artwork submitted in May so I thought I'd write about two of them that really grabbed my interest.
When I saw Rabotnik's picture (without seeing any information about it) my first thought was 'that looks like Optimus Prime and Megatron combined'. It turns out that is exactly what it is. The two modes are full of references to both leaders;
The metallic grey, the rocket launcher on the arm, the two dark shapes (wheels) on his hips, the bucket head, the rocket launcher behind his shoulder all mimic G1 Megatron whilst the red and blue suggests G1 Optimus Prime, as does the windows representing pectorals. Notice the head unifies both characters by being both blue and buckety.
This is the only Transformer art work that Rabotnit has produced, and he only signed up at Seibertron to share this picture. This is a shame as I would like to see what other strange concepts he could come up with. Imagine the strange stories that could be created in a universe where Prime and Megatron get spliced together...
Take some time to look around Rabotnik's website: http://www.rabotik.nl/ as it has some cool stuff, including a short animation showing the development of Optimega Pron. You'll find it here.

Newsletter June!
If you look at Hanch Prime's first page of his blog you'll see several excerpts of comic art featuring G1 Optimus Prime, Megatron and Starscream. A close look at these pictures suggests he used the Masterpieces as models, and it is worth taking a close look as the pictures have such intricate details. The lines are crisp and clear so the level of detail doesn't confuse the eye. What is also interesting is that, similar to Rabotnik's website, Hanch Prime has given us two versions of the pictures - one showing the rough planning sketches and the other showing the finished (but uncoloured) line drawing.

Send us your artwork!
Art entries are reviewed on a monthly basis for the newsletter. Send your entries here by May 28th for the July newsletter Please note that your artwork needs it's own thread/gallery or both.

All right boys and girls, it’s that time of the month again (no not THAT time of the month). It’s time for this month’s fanfic. WE NEED MORE SUBMISSIONS! I can’t stress this enough. I know you people are creative, let’s see it!

I'd like to throw a topic at everyone this month. This month I would love to see some submissions about a city-bot: Metroplex, Tripticon, Fortress Maximus, Scorponok, Grand Maximus, or Metrotitan. Maybe about their thoughts and goals, maybe a fight, or maybe whatever else you can come up with. Who will write next month’s chosen submission? Only time will tell….

All entrants have received a cookie for their participation (check your folders). This month’s runners-up include CrabHeart for a laugh, and an old entry by The_Fires_Of_Inferno for a dark and artistic tale. Thanks, guys!

This month’s winning story is a great G1 story of first impressions and misunderstandings between Autobots and humans. It’s a lighthearted read, written by Neko and definitely recommended. I give this story 4 cultural misunderstandings out of 5.

Shoots and Ladders
by Neko » Tue May 05, 2009 12:20 pm

Synopsis: G1.

Sometimes first impressions aren’t always the right ones, but around the Ark, one truth remains firm and everlasting: When in doubt, duck. Spike-centric series of related one-shots.

Chapter One: Traffic Tickets and Color Wheels

The day had begun much like the day before and the one prior to that.
For the most part, it was very pleasant. Strange, alien, and mind-boggling, but pleasant.

Everything around him was big. Very big. Just looking up at the ceiling too long made him dizzy, which was kind of fun for a while until he started feeling nauseous. After taking a moment to secure his equilibrium, Spike returned to his current pastime: Robot Watching. Well, they referred to themselves as Mechs and even seemed to have taken offense when Spike used the ‘R’ word.

He was careful not to do that again. When he could help it.

It had barely been a week since the world had woken up to having Giant Alien Ro—er, Mechs wandering around their backyard and Spike was still riding a giddy high that’d been with him since he and his father had been rescued from the waters of the Pacific ocean after the oil rig they’d been on was attacked…by other giant alien Mechs.
Evil giant alien Mechs. Who called themselves Decepticons. Spike made a mental note to ask one of the Autobots how they came up with those names! Perhaps the name has more of a terrifying connotation in their native language, but something seemed to have been lost in translation.

It was fascinating to watch the Autobots as they went about their duties to get their ship-turned-impromptu-base up and running: repairing bits of corridor, replacing broken panels and consoles, testing out everything. They appeared so alien-like yet so human; the young boy could not help but be fascinated. The Ark was a complex, highly advanced piece of technology that boggled Spike’s mind whenever he attempted to wrap his around the sheer improbability of it all. Everything seemed so intricate, so delicate; circuitry and the like ran through almost everything, the floors, the walls, everything.
Had Spike not been seeing Mechs who most certainly weighed a good couple tons walk on the flooring he was certain he would be scared to do anything but tip-toe across the metal plating, all too aware of the delicate, and likely expensive as hell, circuitry underneath. Yet everything was guarded, reinforced, and covered to a degree virtually unknown and certainly unheard-of to mankind. Even if he had a diamond crowbar, Spike didn’t think he could do the ship any real damage; maybe a dent in the wall if he swung hard enough. But that was a big maybe.

Sitting on the ledge of one of the consoles, Spike allowed the scene before him unfold like some never-ending television show.
For the most part, what was once the bridge of the ship had become the main control room, the official room of business. It was here that Spike had the best vantage point to observe humanity’s newest allies and really it was one of only a few places where he could be out of way of large clambering feet. The Autobots were always outwardly careful whenever he was around, but in everyone’s best interest Spike always took the liberty to find elevated seats to keep from getting caught underfoot. For the most part, the day was routine and uneventful and Mechs wandered through the control room, deaf and unaware to all except their work.
He hadn’t met all of the Autobots yet, or spoken to most, but they didn’t seem to mind the young human watchong them as they worked; though Spike did notice one of them kept glancing at him as if to see if he was still there. After a while it began to nag at the boy, wondering if maybe the Autobot was silently trying to tell him to scram, that he was annoying them. The last thing he needed was a pissed-off robot. He was about to scoot off the edge and find some other room to observe when the door to the far right of the room opened and a Mech walked in, malice seeming to rise off his red armor plating like heat.
When the Mech glanced toward Spike and then tromped forward with deliberate steps, Spike froze. In his mind, he wondered what he had done to anger anyone. He couldn't think of anything, perhaps he wasn’t looking at Spike. Maybe it was one of the Mechs next to him or….

“You!” The Autobot said, pointing toward Spike and any hope of avoiding a confrontation was deflated. What had he done?
As the Autobot approached, Spike shrank back, glancing pleadingly to the two Mechs who were working on the large computer only a little ways off, but they seemed just as confused as he and even a little curious. Spike belatedly realized that the Mech was a lot shorter then most of the Autobots and he had a similar shape to Bumblebee, but despite the similarity, the Mech’s red armour and little horns made him look more like a (comparatively) little devil. The small Autobot impended over Spike, blue eyes aglow with fury. His hand shot forward and Spike clenched his eyes shut instinctively. When nothing happened, he opened his eyes warily and was greeted with a small slip of paper pinched between the Mech’s large fingers.

Bemused, Spike glanced up at the angry ‘Bot quizzically.

When no explanation was forthcoming, Spike attentively reached out and took the little piece of paper, giving the Mech one more uncertain glance. Looking over the words on the paper, Spike clamped down on the sudden urge to giggle inappropriately. He bit his lip and looked up, noting the Autobot seemed to expect something from him.

“OK?” Spike asked, unable to completely mask his amusement.

“Explain this!” boomed the Autobot.
If the situation hadn’t gleaned the attention of the room before, it certainly did now. The perpetual sensation of diminutiveness suddenly multiplied as the Autobot practically loomed over him. It was quite a disconcerting feeling, especially considering this was supposedly an ally.

“You’re human, you should know!”

“I do know; It’s a ticket,” said Spike simply. What was there to explain?

“What is it for?!”

He blinked, confused. “…Says here you ran a red light….”

Logic told him that should have quelled the red Autobot, however it only seemed to create more ire. “So?” the ‘Bot demanded.

Spike struggled to answer the question with any sort of dignity.
“Well…that’s against the law.”

“Says who?”

Spike regarded the Mech with an incredulous stare. Was he being serious? “Uh…The Law? The President, Congress…our entire judicial system? Everyone.”

“Well, how do you expect us to know that?”

Spike blinked, unsure how to answer him. “Well…. Everyone knows…it’s just common knowledge.”

“Everyone knows what?”

Spike allowed himself a small smile as he explained a concept he knew since he was in kindergarten. “…that red means stop.” It was curious to see the Mech’s face change from intensely furious to utterly confused in the span of a second.
“That makes absolutely no sense. Red is a color, it doesn’t mean anything.”

It was Spike turn to look confused and even a little offended. “Of course it does. All colors have a meaning. Well, most do. It’s psychological.”

“How stupid!”

Spike was vaguely aware that there was now a small audience gathering around them, some of them looking rather amused. A tall green Mech walked up beside the smaller red one and placed a placating hand on his shoulder. “What’s wrong, Cliffjumper?”

The red mini-bot turned to the taller one. “I got pulled over by the human police today and the stupid fleshy gave me this thing!” he waved the itty-bitty slip of paper around like a piece of confetti. “A ticket!
How stupid is that?”

“You ran a red light,” Spike reminded him. “That’s a big traffic no-no.” Despite the probable imprudence of such an action, Spike wagged a finger at the Autobot as if gently scolding a toddler.

“What does it mean when you get a ticket?” the green Mech asked Spike before Cliffjumper could respond.

“Well…usually it means a fine. This is your first one so that’s pretty much all it means, but if you’re a repeat offender you could lose your license or get sent to jail. But if that ever happened to one of you guys I don’t think they’d send you to jail…the impound lot, maybe….”

“For not obeying a stupid light?” Cliffjumper demanded, furious again. “What’s the point? Are they some religious relic or something? Is it some taboo to not respect the shiny lights? Have I offended your primitive culture?”

Spike rolled his eyes, trying not to feel offended. “No. They’re traffic lights. It helps regulate the flow of traffic at intersections to keep people from crashing into each other when they cross the road. When you ran a red light you broke the law. You could’ve caused a wreck and hurt someone.”

Cliffjumper shook his head in exasperation and grumbled. “What a useless system. Using colors as traffic signals….”

“Works for us,” remarked the human with equal grouchiness. As enthralling and as fascinating as these Autobots were, he had limits on how many insults on his people and culture he could take. “Red means stop, yellow means caution, green means go.”

“Why? Why not blue means stop and red mean go? Or black means stop. That makes more sense than red.”

“We wouldn’t be able to see a black light very well. And…red is kind of…well, people see it as kind of an ominous color.
It grabs people’s attention.”

“Cliffjumper being the exception, apparently,” a dark blue and yellow Mech smirked from the group of spectators, a red chevron on his forehead. Spike had noticed several of the Autobots with a similar design. It made it kind of hard to remember their names.

“Ominous?” Cliffjumper asked dubiously. “How? Red is an Autobot color!” He pounded his fist against his chest with bravado. “The color of bravery and strength! It’s a heroic color. What’s so slagging ominous about the color red?”

Spike was silent for a moment as he analyzed his own perceptions of the color in question and why it always caught his attention. “…red’s the color of human blood.”

The group went silent as they absorbed the statement, understanding and confusion playing their minds at once.

“Usually when we see red the first thing we think of—well, I think of—is blood. And then other related images pop up. Like anger, death, murder, pain, torture, war…and so on,” added Spike. “But it also has the same connotations like you said. There are some colors that have multiple meanings depending on the context.”

“How so?” The green Mech—Hound, wasn’t it?— asked. He, like several of the other Autobots, looked intrigued and Spike felt a bubble of jollity rise from the pit of his stomach. So far, his time around the Autobots was spent being virtually ignored by all save a few he’d made friends with, and his insides filled with the warm-fuzzies at the notion they were actually paying attention to him and even asking him things. His inner child squealed with joy.

“Well, let’s take your color for instance: green.
Usually we associate green with nature, for obvious reasons—it’s the most abundant color in nature. From that association we get things like life, peace, freedom, and tranquility.” The green Mech smiled at that. “But then green can also mean jealousy. There’s a saying that describes someone as being ‘green with envy’.”

“How about yellow?” asked Bumblebee, one of the few Mechs so far he had gotten to know fairly well. Spike had not seen him come in.
Beside him stood a Mech he had been introduced to as Prowl and beside him was Optimus Prime. With such a prestigious audience hanging on his words, Spike began to feel a bit self-conscious.

“Yellow? Oh, us, well in a traffic light it means caution and you’re supposed to slow down…,so when the light turns red you can stop.” He paused and add, rather embarrassed, ”But then again, most people speed up so they can dodge the red light, so I guess that one’s a bit of a catch-22. But yellow can also mean happy, peaceful, and fun. It’s considered a happy color.”

Bumblebee smiled at that, but Spike was confused when around him, the Mechs began chuckling and murmuring to each other. Spike caught a muttered ‘oh the irony’ and ‘Someone go tell Sideswipe.’ Spike hadn’t met anyone named Sideswipe, or at least he didn’t think he had.

He turned to look at Bumblebee, tilting his head quizzically. The yellow minibot merely shook his head and waved the silent inquiry away, chuckling.

“I’ll tell you later,” he said.

“What about blue?” someone asked to Spike’s left, but he didn’t see who.

“Blue? Ah, that’s kind of a hard one. See, a light blue, like the sky, is considered a happy color. But a deep blue is more mellow and sad. We don’t call certain styles of Jazz ‘The Blues’ for nothing. Blue can either mean really happy or really sad.
One extreme to another depending on the shade or hue. But there’s an old idiom that says someone who talks really fast without stopping is “Talk up a blue streak” but I’m not sure how that relates to the actual color.”

The room erupted in another bout of laughter and several Mech were shouting ‘Ain’t that true!’ Spike made a mental note to ask Bumblebee about that as well.

Hey Transtopia folks - Burn wants to interview you. How did you get into Transformers? Why are you addicted to kitbashing? What was your first repaint like? What do you do with your spare time?

Don’t keep Burn waiting any longer – he’s getting bored at work. Send him a PM here.

[size=150">Reviews
This is a new section that does not have a banner yet but will. This time Burn reviews a new set of shiny stickers!

Let me begin by saying I'm a big supporter of Reprolabels. I've been using their labels soon after they began business and have always praised their service and quality of their products.

That being said, I decided to try out the "opposition".

Opposition you say? Reprolabels have opposition?

Well only when it comes to faction stickers and only for Autobots and Decepticons.

I was searching through Hobby Link Japan during one of my regular searches for Transformers and weaponry from other lines which I use on my own customs, when I came upon a set of faction labels produced by a company called Hobby Design. "Metal logos" for my TF's, well I thought that sounded pretty nifty so I ordered myself two sets, which, with postage, set me back $15.90AUD (Roughly $13US)

What do you get? Well you get a sheet of with 40 stickers, 20 Autobot, 20 Decepticon, ranging in sizes from the biggest at 8mmx8mm (0.315 inches) to the smallest at 3mmx3mm (0.1181 inches).

When they arrived the first thing I noticed was the "Kodak Paper" label on the back. hmmmm ... printed on Kodak Paper, wasn't sure if that was a good sign or not.

The second thing I noticed was that they weren't cut out. One of the biggest steps Reprolabels made was when they went from labels you cut out yourself, to ones that were pre-cut and you simply peeled off and applied. This seemed a step back to me. However, the reasoning for it soon became obvious.

For a quick experiment (more a case of me being too impatient really) I applied one of the stickers to one of my recent figures, Bling. It was here that I discovered that while you have to cut the sticker from the sheet, you don't have to trim it to the edge. Once you peel off the backing sticker you then affix the label to the surface you're applying it to, press it down nice and hard, then peel off the clear plastic coating leaving a nice shiny metallic faction sticker in it's place! However a word of warning, you need to be REAL careful when removing the clear plastic coating as the stickers are made up of individual pieces and some may not stick. See the pics for what I mean.

At the point in time of me writing this review, i've only tried the labels on one figure, and my mobile phone, and the one problem I can see is that the metallic surface and the size of them tends to obscure the details, of course this may be dependant on the background surface too given that i've only used them on a dark grey surface and a metallic silver surface.

Overall? I think they're a half decent set. They could be a little larger (to accommodate larger figures) and I think given the right figure, will set the figure off nicely. However I think these labels may be best suited not for figures, but for things like your mobile phones, iPods, etc, in other words, they're bling for Mojo's bling.

I'll be sticking with Reprolabels for my stickers.

Now for some pictures!

Welcome to the Transtopia Newsletter. We are proud to give you an update for the month of November. Lots of things are happening in this hot forum – from artwork to customs, from updates to upgrades. Our members have been hard at work. To better reflect the community’s artistic talent we have changed the name of this newsletter from “Custom Monthly Update” to “Transtopia Newsletter”. Over the next few months we will be rolling out several new sections to the newsletter. Stay tuned. Until then drop by Transtopia for the latest work. -Stormrider

A Message from Ryan
Hey everyone,

In a few short weeks, an all-new feature section will make its debut on Seibertron.com called "Transtopia". This new section will feature the creative work of the many talented Seibertronians that make up this website. Transtopia will be the place where members of Seibertron.com (we're looking at YOU) will be able to showcase incredible custom figures and kitbashes, beautiful artwork, and amazing fan-fiction.

Transtopia will be dedicated officially to one of the greatest members of the Transformers community, Bill "TFmaster" Koshorek. Bill was the very proud owner of the fantastic Transtopia community that used to reside at tfmaster.com. Bill approached me at BotCon 2006 about moving the Transtopia community over to Seibertron.com. I took over the hosting of tfmaster.com in November 2006 after agreeing to create a new Transtopia here on Seibertron.com that merged the best of the Transformers mega sites with the best of the creative minds within the Transformers community. Before plans and ideas could be completed, Bill had a massive heart attack in March 2007. Sadly, Bill did not make it and it seemed that Transtopia might die with him.

Over the next year and a half, I felt an immense amount of guilt over not completing Bill's dream. That was until 2 staff members on Seibertron.com, First Gen and Stormrider, came along and really started pushing for the creative content in the Transtopia forums to be featured on Seibertron.com once again. Their interest is in making sure that the Transtopia community thrives and breathes life back into the Transtopia project and ultimately Bill's dream. In November 2008, I began programming the new Transtopia gallery section that will feature Customs and Artwork, which was the primary focus of Bill's Transtopia.

Transtopia will be different than any other application on the major Transformers websites. You'll be able to create your own galleries, add images to those galleries, select which categories those images belong within, automatic on-the-fly thumbnail creation, the ability to easily change the sort order of your galleries and images, easy search functionality, view galleries by users, and more!

In addition to the customs and artwork sections of Transtopia, I am also working on an all-new Fan-Fiction section that will allow you to add fiction, chapters and many other similar advanced custom functionality that will be built with writers in mind.

I have three goals that I hope to accomplish with Seibertron.com's Transtopia: 1) Create a fun and easy to use section for fans to showcase their creative talents, 2) bring back some of the incredibly talented Transtopians to Seibertron.com and 3) make Bill very proud. I'll know #3 will happen when #1 and #2 happen. If I can accomplish those goals, I'll be a very happy person.

Check back later this month to check out the all-new Seibertron.com Transtopia! In the meantime, here's Stormrider's monthly update for Transtopia ...

Animated Starscream Face Resculpting Guide
First of all thanks to Maximo Prime (of SECTOR70)who's idea it was that i write this guide.

Tools you will need;a modelling knife,a selection of small needle files,some very fine wet & dry sandpaper,
some spray undercoat/primer and most importantly some sculpting material (personally i use Green stuff).

Step one.
Take apart the head and using a file or modelling knife open up the mouth area as wide as possible

{L_IMAGE}

Be carefull to not to damage the "lug" that the screw fits into when the head is reassembled..
{L_IMAGE}

This is how the front of the head looks at this stage..
{L_IMAGE}

Next fill the hole with Green Stuff..
{L_IMAGE}

Trim off any excess with a modelling knife..
{L_IMAGE}

Now using a sculpting tool begin to carve the mouth..
{L_IMAGE}
When you are happy with the shape leave to dry for at least 12hrs.

Now using a wet finger lightly smudge over the green stuff,this smooths out the surface nicely(please note i don't know how well this will work with other sculpting materials).
{L_IMAGE}

Next using a fine grade sandpaper sand down the green stuff as smoothly as you can..
{L_IMAGE}

Now i spray a light coat of undercoat..
{L_IMAGE}
This will show any imperfections or areas that require any additional sanding.

Using VERY fine sandpaper sand again..
{L_IMAGE}
And undercoat again.

Repeat this process until the face is smooth..
{L_IMAGE}

Finally a couple of general tips.
Look in comic books for some great expressions to copy & if you don't have any sculpting tools get friendly with you're dentist,chances are you might be able to scavenge a few of his old sculpting tools.

I imagine after you look at the McDonald's Beast Wars galleries, many of you will be asking: "Why in the world are there almost 400 photos of the McDonald's Beast Wars figures?" Let me take a moment to explain why these figures are such a key piece to my history with the Transformers brand, why they mean so much to me and how these little guys ultimately tie into part of the origin behind Seibertron.com.

Manta RayPantherBeetleRhinoUnder-3

The McDonald's Beast Wars figures represent a very distinct moment in the history of the Transformers brand. I had discovered my last Generation 2 figure about 10 months earlier in May 1995. On the back of an upper shelf at a KB Toy store at the Genesee Valley mall near Flint, MI, I had discovered Laser Rod Optimus Prime stashed behind several other toys. I had never seen this figure before and was truly elated at this very incredible incarnation of the most iconic Transformer ever. For many months, I thought Laser Rod Optimus Prime was THE last Transformer. I scoured the local Kmarts in the Flint suburbs where I grew up as well as a several Targets for many months but never found any new Transformers. Not only was this before the Internet would drastically change our lives, it was also before I had ever discovered a little store chain called "Wal-Mart."

Fast forward 8 months later to January 1996. There was a brand spanking new "Big K" (a Kmart store variant that was comparable to many of Wal-Mart's stores) that had recently opened near the McDonald's that I worked at as a teenager on Owen Rd. in Fenton, MI. Shortly after that stores grand opening (which was a HUGE deal to this town back then after the old school Kmart store had closed on the other side of town), I discovered a new series of "Beast Wars Transformers" figures. I didn't discover these in the fall of 1995 like many other Transformers fans have claimed to have found these figures.

This new line of transforming animals was apparently a product of one of Hasbro's competitors, Kenner. I had thought that Hasbro must've sold the Transformers brand to the highest bidder due to the obvious decline in sales toward the end of the Generation 2 line. Little did I know at that time that Hasbro had actually purchased Kenner recently (which was most famous for its Star Wars line) and had decided to move all of their action figure lines to that "brand".

The first set of figures that I purchased was the Optimus "Primal" and Megatron 2 pack that came with a mini-comic book that reminded me of the mini-comics that used to accompany Mattel's Masters of the Universe line during the 1980s. It was a no-brainer since those were the only names that I had recognized amongst toys such as Cheetor, Waspinator, Rattrap and Razorbeast.

CheetorDinobot
bw_artwork_cheetor.jpgbw_artwork_cheetor2.jpgbw_artwork_dinobot.jpgbw_artwork_dinobot2.jpg

I thought it was very odd that Kenner would make two of the most powerful Transformers not much bigger than the Generation 2 Cyberjets. It also struck me as odd that they were not using the Autobot and Decepticon factions. What the heck were these "Maximals" and "Predacons"? Did Hasbro not sell Kenner the rights to some of their copyrights? And why did "Optimus Primal" turn into a bat and Megatron turn into an alligator? What happened to the Transformers?

After I opened the package and read the mini-comic book, I realized that these new Transformers didn't appear to have any relation to the Transformers I had grown up with. The comic pretty much made sure that I knew that these weren't Hasbro's Transformers. "Bio-Genetic Engineering?" Animals? No Energon? Seriously -- c'mon Kenner! Regardless, this was a test of my loyalty to the "transforming" from one thing into a robot concept under the "Transformers" product banner. I knew I didn't like other transforming robot toy lines such as the failed Gobots line from Tonka so I bought a few of the other figures that I could afford at that time.

Fast forward a month later to February 1996. As I mentioned above, I was working at McDonald's as a "swing manager" (basically a "shift manager") at that time while I was unsuccessfully attending the University of Michigan's community college in Flint. Imagine my surprise one day when we were received some paperwork about an upcoming Happy Meal promotion that we would be receiving: "Transformers Beast Wars" for the boys alongside "The Littlest Pet Shop" for the girls.

I'm sure a smile gleaned across my face as I noticed the classic Generation 2 "Transformers" logo next to the Generation 2 Autobot symbol above the words "Beast Wars". This wasn't "Beast Wars Transformers" ... this was "Transformers Beast Wars" with the word "Transformers" positioned dominantly over the words "Beast Wars" instead of the other way around. Imagine how thrilled I was to see the use of the G2 font and Autobot logo after a couple of months of wondering what the heck Kenner had done to the Transformers line I thought they had bought from Hasbro.

As the weeks went by, we received more promotional materials for the McDonald's Beast Wars Happy Meal toys. My hopes were quickly dashed that there would be a continuation of Generation 1 or 2 styled Transformers to accompany the Beast Wars figures I had purchased at Kmart. Instead, they were these lame little beast figures with extremely generic names: Manta Ray, Beetle, Panther and Rhino. I'll let you use your imagination to figure out what each figure transformed into. There was even an unnamed toy designed for children under three that was a head of a lion that turned into an Optimus Prime looking character.

MegatronOptimus Primal
bw_artwork_megatron.jpgbw_artwork_megatron2.jpgbw_artwork_optimusprimal.jpgbw_artwork_optimusprimal2.jpg

Once we received the Happy Meal display piece for our restaurant, I gladly volunteered to set it up. I thought it was pretty cool to have loved the Transformers for so long that I was able to set these up first hand. Looking back at this experience, it wasn't really that big of a deal but I sure thought it was at the time. And to think that my parents had wanted me to work at VG's, a local grocery store chain on the east side of Michigan!

The induction of the McDonald's Beast Wars figures led to a stream of creativity on my behalf. The new Happy Meal boxes, which featured a lot of new artwork for the Beast Wars figures as well as the McDonald's figures, really helped me accept these figures as official Transformers figures. I had even gone so far as to draw character sheets for all of the Beast Wars Transformers that I owned after I had come up with an idea to incorporate these new Transformers into the Generation One stories I had grown up with (thanks to McDonald's use of the Generation 2 Transformers font and Autobot logo). I even have the artwork still to show you guys my cartoon-styled take on these "Beast Wars" guys. Optimus and Megatron were who they always were, Terrorsaur was the new Starscream type character (most likely due to his alternate mode and wings in robot mode), Tarantulas was my new Soundwave type character (most likely due to the visor on his face) and Cheetor was my new Prowl type character (most likely due to me thinking that a cheetah would "prowl" and because I thought his face kind of looked like Prowl's at the time). This was months before the Beast Wars cartoon's pilot episodes aired on television and about 6 months prior to Cheetor's dream sequence which cameoed the Decepticon Starscream in "The Web".

PantherRattrap
bw_artwork_panther.jpgbw_artwork_panther2.jpgbw_artwork_rattrap.jpgbw_artwork_rattrap2.jpg

Within a couple of months, my excitement about the Beast Wars Transformers really started to heat up. I was very excited about my beliefs that these could be new incarnations of the characters that I had grown up with (even thought some of my character associations didn't really make at the time looking back on all of this). As I continued to purchase more and more of these Beast Wars figures, I had grown to accept them. Sure it was a new take on the Transformers, but I was enjoying these new incarnations just the same (much to my own surprise).

After buying a toy magazine sometime in the spring of 1996, I saw an advertisement for a Transformers convention called "Botcon" that would was going to be held in Chicago over the 4th of July weekend run by a local group of guys from Ypsilanti, MI who went by "The Men-In-Black". After so many years of thinking I was the only person around into Transformers, I was very excited about the prospect of meeting other Transformers fans at this "Botcon" convention, I had begun working on a fan newsletter I called "Trans-Forum". Fortunately I had ended my employment at McDonald's by this time at 19 to start working as a car salesman for the Al Serra dealership organization after dropping out of college 3 times. To start a reader base for Trans-Forum, I grabbed all of the names and addresses I could find from the letter pages in the Marvel's "Transformers" and "Transformers: Generation 2" comic books. The first issue of Trans-Forum went out to almost 100 people in May 1996. I even made a special "Botcon" edition which I gave away to people at Botcon 1996 in Chicago. The fanbase for Trans-Forum continued to grow year after year which led to the next phase of my involvement with the Transformers community.

RazorbeastRhino
bw_artwork_razorbeast.jpgbw_artwork_razorbeast2.jpgbw_artwork_rhino.jpgbw_artwork_rhino2.jpg

Some time during 1998, I began working on a new Generation One comic book that took place after Marvel's run of the original Transformers comic book. I was fascinated with the Japanese terminology which I had only begun to learn about back in 1995 after purchasing a bootleg Masterforce video. The Internet had exposed me to a new word that I really liked which the Japanese used for the name of the Transformers homeplanet Cybertron: "Seibertron". This word would be the title of the comic book idea that I had because I wanted to implement key elements from the American continuity as well as the Japanese continuity which I had recently discovered. The "Seibertron" comic book gained mention in one of the issues of the Trans-Forum fanzine during that year.

Trans-Forum eventually evolved into Seibertron.com during the summer of 2000 as I had become more and more fascinated with the prospect of making my own website on the Internet to showcase my interests in the Transformers. That's a whole other story in itself that I might go into another time.

TarantulasTerrorsaur
bw_artwork_tarantulas.jpgbw_artwork_tarantulas2.jpgbw_artwork_terrorsaur.jpgbw_artwork_terrorsaur2.jpg

I attribute my interests in contributing to the Transformers community to the McDonald's Beast Wars figures. Maybe the Beast Wars cartoon would have prompted me to get involved with the community. Maybe not. It was the McDonald's Beast Wars Transformers that got me to imagine that these new characters were somehow tied into the original Transformers. While the McDonald's Beast Wars figures might not be that exciting individually, I attribute the start of Trans-Forum to this Happy Meal promotion which eventually led to the creation of Seibertron.com.

If you were wondering at the start of this article why the McDonald's Beast Wars Transformers have almost 400 images amongst their galleries, I hope you now understand how special these figures are to me. I wanted to treat these figures just like I would any other Transformer toy since I consider these 5 toys to be a part of the official Transformers toy line. Each gallery is complete with comparison pictures of the other figures from this set, comparison pictures with the other Beast Wars characters who were pictured on the Happy Meal boxes, detailed photographs of the Happy Meal boxes, scans and photographs of my artwork of these figures and even a couple of special items that I had retained from my tenure as a McDonald employee such as the reference card as well as the instructions for putting together the store's display for this Happy Meal promotion.

I hope all of you enjoyed this flashback in time and that maybe you learned something new about the origin of Seibertron.com. I wouldn't do all of this endless work if it wasn't for such an amazing audience of people that I get to entertain. I hope that all of you are enjoying the hard work that myself and the entire staff puts into this website every day. Isn't it interesting to think that you might just owe your enjoyment of this site to the McDonald's Beast Wars Transformers? Thank you for supporting Seibertron.com ... it's been a wild ride for me personally during the past 10 years. I can't wait to see what happens in the next 10 years.
