With the comic book adaptation of Transformers: The Animated Movie being released this week for its 20th anniversary, Wizard Entertainment Group took this time and interview the comic's writer, Bob Budiansky and penciller Don Figueroa.

Budiansky "I think the basic concept of living robots has a lot of appeal. The fact that they can change into all sorts of weapons and devices puts them at a level beyond humans. In other words, the transforming concept is cool, but if your next-door neighbor turned into a Buick it would look kinda silly—but it works really well when a robot does it. People can accept that. Plus, add the eternal conflict that the Transformers are locked in, and their ever-expanding mythology, and you have a very rich playground of ideas to run around in. But that’s just from a story point of view. Hasbro’s been putting out some great toys over the years as well".

Figueroa "It’s a fan’s dream! I tried to stay as true to the original, even adapting my style a bit to that of the cartoon, but not totally copying it frame by frame. It’s such a classic that I really didn’t want to mess with it visually too much".
