Ok, where to begin? As many of you know, I've been a pretty big naysayer about a variety of issues regarding the upcoming Transformers Movie. Most of my concerns have revolved around the designs of the robots. While I still think the look of Megatron and Starscream is pretty bad, other characters such as Blackout, Barricade and Bumblebee are saving my overall opinion. The leaked script that I read during August 2006 is actually a big part of what started to turn me around about the movie. While I think it's great that Transformers "transform", I've always been more interested in the story behind the Autobots and the Decepticons. I found the script interesting, entertaining, compelling, emotional and true to an alien invasion of Transformers robots coming to Earth. While I found the script up to par, I still had my reservations about the movie.
Until tonight.

Let me rewind by about 6 hours. Tonight was the big event that truly brought me from Chicago to a fun-filled weekend in New York that just happened to intentionally coincide with Toy Fair 2007. The event was located at the Walter Reade Theatre on 165 W 65th St in New York city, on the northside of Manhattan and east of Central Park (near WABC's studios). The doors to the event opened at 5:45.

Upon entrance to the event, I had begun to immediately feel underdressed in my black pants and button up shirt. It had become obvious very quickly that the event wasn't designed to cater to guys who run major Transformers fan websites. Regardless that I was missing the attire that most were wearing, I quickly saw some familiar faces from Hasbro, Hunter PR and, of course, several key people within the Transformers hobby.
The walls of the front rooms to the theatre were decorated with various Transformers Movie posters, most of which prominently featured the Autobot and Decepticon symbols. The cardboard cutouts of Optimus Prime and Bumblebee were near the place where we checked in our coats. The 4 primary products featured at Toy Fair (Optimus Prime helmet, arm blaster, Leader class figure and Ultimate Bumblebee) were also on display. I expressed to Aaron Archer that I thought the Bumblebee figure was excellent. He seemed to be really proud of the figure. I got the same sense from Brian Goldner during a brief conversation with him at Hasbro's Toy Fair event this past Saturday.
The staff of theatre people operating the theatre were all dressed in black Autobot and Decepticon t-shirts. It was pretty cool to see all of these people wearing Transformers shirts ... and we weren't even at a BotCon or comic book convention. The staff of people handing out drinks had black Autobot and Decepticon napkins which several of us kept as souveniers.

After a few drinks, we started moving into the theatre to view the presentation. I sat next to Tony Bacala (tfw2005.com) and Rick Alvarez, one row above Brian Savage and one row below Kevin and Jason Lukis (unicron.com). Ben Yee (bwtf.com) was there also but I'm not sure where he sat at the event. I'm assuming that most of the people who were in the theatre were executives of various companies or worked for Hasbro, Hunter PR, Paramount, Dreamworks or various retail chains (the CEO of Toys R Us was apparently there).
Brian Goldner (Hasbro - CEO) took the stage once everyone was in the theatre. He made several comments about the Transformers franchise before making some introductions. I missed the name of one of the people who were on the stage. Tom DeSanto was present, but not on the stage. Brian Goldner was joined by Adam Goodman (Dreamworks), Wayne (didn't catch his last name) and, of course, Michael Bay (Director). Here are some of the things that were said about the Transformers Movie prior to playing the 4 different scenes:

There were a total of 4 scenes previewed at the event. If you do not want to read any spoilers, please do not read any futher. Here are my notes and thoughts on the scenes that were previewed:

After the event, a group of us were gathered near the coat check toward the front of the building. I talked to Paula Walsh (Hasbro's Public Relations Director) for a little bit. Brian Goldner joined the group to ask a few of us what we thought. I said "Remember that little Transformers 101 stunt from my website?" everyone kind of chuckles nervously, not sure where I'm going with that comment. "Let's just say that tonight was Transformers 102 and it was MY turn to get schooled." Everyone in the group laughed and I felt a lot better after acknowledging the Transformers 101 thing directly to Brian. No hard feelings, right? ;)
The Transformers Movie reminds me most of Independence Day (ID4). It doesn't seem to have the stupid slapstick humor that I didn't find appealing in Armageddon but it does retain some of the classic humor that Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum demonstrated in Indepence Day as well as Bruce Willis and Ben Afleck in Michael Bay's Armaggedon. It's not Steve Buscemi type humor.

Click here to view screen captures from the trailer ...
The action seems very similar to Indepence Day (ID4 - Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum). ID4 is one of my all-time favorite movies so I'm pretty pleased with this direction. The scenes were absolutely incredible, the transformation of Blackout was fascinating and spectacular, and the mood was exactly what I was hoping for in the movie. I still think some of the robot designs could have used some improvements to be more reminiscent of the original characters but it's too late for that now. From what I've seen and from the version of the script that I've read, I think ILM has done a top notch job with bringing Transformers to life. The robots are designed to look like REAL Transformers, not computer animated or cell animated or toys for that matter. I think this goal was accomplished.
I've read that a few people out there were questioning if Hasbro/Paramount/Dreamworks "bought out" some of the outspoken people such as myself who attended this event. If getting to see a sneak peak of the movie so that I can share my thoughts with all of the fans of my website constitutes as being "bought out", then that's what happened. I think their main objective was to give some key people in the Transformers hobby a taste of what Hasbro/Paramount/Dreamworks have been seeing so that we could share that with you. It's a little different to hear the opinion of a die-hard fan like myself and not from someone who's officially involved with the movie. I saw it. I got it. It's going to be a spectacular summer blockbuster that most of us should enjoy. Ben Yee (bwtf.com), Kevin Lukis (unicron.com), Jason Lukis (unicron.com), Rick Alvarez (Transformers Collector's Club, etc), Tony Bacala (tfw2005.com) and myself all seemed to genuinely enjoy the movie. If I can look past some of the robot designs that I don't really like and was able to thoroughly enjoy myself while I watched the scenes that I saw, then I'm pretty confident that most of you will be able to enjoy the movie as well.

The Transformers Movie is going to be a very solid action flick that audiences worldwide will thoroughly enjoy. If you're a fan that is really against this movie, all that I ask is that you see the movie at least once with an open mind. You know the movie is going to be different. If you can accept the Transformers Movie for what it is, I'm pretty confident that you'll find yourself having a great time with the rest of the audience.
Stay tuned to Seibertron.com for all of the latest news regarding the Transformers Movie. I'll see you in theatres starting July 4th, 2007!

| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28509) Posted by Bluebullet on February 19th, 2007 @ 9:49pm CST Hmm. Everything I thought about this movie is assured. A slap to the face of everything that came before with forced humor and War of the Worlds mixed in.
Hey Seibs, I heard that someone in the room that worked for Bay was talking about "Megatron". What did he say and what made him shut up?
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28512) Posted by Seibertron on February 19th, 2007 @ 9:52pm CST I don't think I heard anyone talking about Megatron.
I think you're being awful harsh about this movie since you haven't actually seen anything yet. If you see as much of the movie that I saw and still feel that way, then so be it. But I think if you watch the 25 minutes of film that I saw, I think you'll be impressed.
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28514) Posted by Fang Wolf on February 19th, 2007 @ 9:55pm CST Independance Day you say? Arg, I hate that movie, I only liked it when I was 8 -_- Bugger, I'll still give it a chance though. | |

| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28529) Posted by Liege Evilmus on February 19th, 2007 @ 10:10pm CST I've toured and lurked around alot of TF sites. This is the only one that I have respect enough to watch and follow. Not to say the others are not without merit in their own rights, but this site rocks.
In my time since I've signed up here, I've agreed with dam near every sentement I've seen or read. As a natural contradician, that's saying alot. I had hopes for this movie since its inception, but knowing what Hollywood does, they weren't high. However I always tried to keep an open mind during all the posts, drama, and leaks surrounding it. Eventualy, that open mind started to shut, and realy became more ajar than open. Still, as I've mentioned, I respect the opinions of this site and it's staff. So reguardless of the design flaws, if you say its good, I'll take your word and push my mind open till 7/4 when the film itself determins how it will close! ------------------------------- Sorry, although I'm tempted, I don't wanna see the clips you brought yet. Thanks, but again, I wanna be suprised on 7/4 with what I see.
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28530) Posted by Bluebullet on February 19th, 2007 @ 10:10pm CST
I have seen something. I have seen Bumblebee become a mute oversized dog for Shia Labeouf, Megatron become a scrapmetal vampire, Optimus stealing Rodimus's decals, Ratchet become a yellow bird, Starscream become a bug/ape/chicken hybrid, Ironhide become so Texan he has a bull's head, Frenzy become a TV antennae who wants to be General Grievous, and every humanoid trait of the Transformers be stripped away. I have seen more than something. I have seen an eye full. I will not contribute any money to this generic monster/alien invasion movie with a beloved pop-culture brand on the cover. Nothing will ever change my mind about this movie and I will protest and rant about this movie until the day I die.

You major in marketing in college? Pretty much exactly what I didn't want it to be. Instead of going back on your TF101 thing you should have asked about Megatron and why they did what they did.

| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28540) Posted by Seibertron on February 19th, 2007 @ 10:22pm CST
No I didn't major in marketing in college. I'm just good at what I do. There wasn't a reason to ask why they did what they did. We already know why they did what they did and there's no changing it at this point. I can either be miserable because Megatron looks like crap or I can enjoy the other aspects of the movie that I think are great. There's no sense dwelling on things that are out of my control. I liked the script. I like Sam. I like Bumblebee. I like just about everything except for Ratchet, Megatron, Starscream and Frenzy. I actually even like Ratchet ... just not as Ratchet. Same for 'Screamer.
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28543) Posted by Colinus Maximus on February 19th, 2007 @ 10:26pm CST I was looking forward to it from the begining, but this review of the preview has be drooling in anticipation. Then you add the comparasions to ID4...I need a time machine to jump to July 4th! ID4 is one of my favorite movies and to date one of only 2 movies I saw multiple times in theatres (3 times, the other being The Fellowship of the Ring which I saw twice). | |

| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28577) Posted by Robinson on February 19th, 2007 @ 10:42pm CST Blue Bullet, I think its time to look past the hatred for the movie and stop seeing everything with rose colored glasses, I respect your opinion on the designs and how you feel however seibertron is right, you really haven't seen anything. | |
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28581) Posted by Transtopias Rodimus Prime on February 19th, 2007 @ 10:44pm CST Dude Ryan, do you have Carpaltunnel from that review? ..... Where to start? I've gone through all the feelings of betrayal, hatred of Bay, and the Bot designs, just like everyone else. Although I think Mr. Siebertron was really trying hard not to scream/cry during his recount of the evenings events, I think the movie will be great. It may not be what all of us '80s kids wanted for 20 years, but I never wanted Optimus as an Ape. Look at where Beastwars/Machines ended up. BeastMachines is my favorite cartoon series now. Change sucks no matter what it is. The only regret any of us true Transfans will have is if we don't watch this on a giant screen with 100 other Transfans. If you go and watch the movie at least twice in the theatres then you can talk all the smack you want. Until then... Transformers Rule! | |
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28587) Posted by Zeds on February 19th, 2007 @ 10:50pm CST We don't have long to wait in the end. This movie will simply rock and if it doesn't well who cares. Life will go on and I will still continue to collect TFs. | |
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28593) Posted by AbsumZer0 on February 19th, 2007 @ 10:54pm CST As someone who doesn't care much at all for either Independence Day or Armageddon (in fact, the only thing I enjoyed about Armageddon were Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare's performances) this review pretty much cements my lack of interest in seeing the film. I always expected the special effects to be great but I'm not interested in effects alone. What with the typical Hollywood action-adventure script the only thing that would have brought me to the theater were recognisable characters and a G1-faithful backstory. | |
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28604) Posted by Transtopias Rodimus Prime on February 19th, 2007 @ 11:07pm CST You're all adults now, You should make you're own movie. G1 style. You know all of us will watch. It matters not if a few of us don't watch and "give Bay our money", the guy,s already rich and he's going to be alot richer come July.
Come on, watch it. You know you want to. (subliminal: watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it.)
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28612) Posted by chuckdawg1999 on February 19th, 2007 @ 11:28pm CST Nice to see you've made it home in one piece. The review is great but didn't change my opinion of the movie. Oh well, have fun with it guys and I'll see you on the other end of the hysteria; I'll be the guy in flannel holding the sign that says the 80's aren't dead. | |
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28626) Posted by Seibertron on February 19th, 2007 @ 11:46pm CST
Thanks for the message. It was quite an ordeal of a trip to get back here. To be honest, I just didn't have the energy to do anything more with Seibertron.com on Friday night once I woke up or on Saturday or Sunday. It felt great to take a few days off from the site for once. I think once everyone has a chance to see the movie that they'll enjoy it. If they're looking for something that's not there, then that's their issue. The movie is what it is. It's got the recipe for a major summer blockbuster along the lines of Armageddon and Independence Day. If you don't like those kinds of movies, then I don't know what to tell you. Heading to bed ... night guys.
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28630) Posted by Transtopias Rodimus Prime on February 19th, 2007 @ 11:53pm CST Yeah what he said. G'nite Chi-town from a Cardinals..I mean Transformers fan. | |
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28632) Posted by Decepticlone Soundwave on February 19th, 2007 @ 11:57pm CST Well Ryan, from your little review here, I'm not to worried about the new movie now. Form what you've said, it seems to be okay. I too am still a little ticked off at the faces of some characters & the fact that some of them don't speak, but I can adjust. Maybe it won't suck............... | |
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28654) Posted by Revimus Leo on February 20th, 2007 @ 12:21am CST This review just gives me more faith in the film. Heck, my anticipation has been growing since I first saw the trailer. Granted, I too, am not carzy about the design of some of the faces, but really, this sounds very great.
The part with Sam's dog made me laugh. I can just see it now. Iron Hide: *Nearly avoids crushing Chihauhau.* Oops, sorry little feller.. Chihauhau: *Yaps at Iron Hide a little, and then pees on IH's foot.* Iron Hide: Why you little varmit.. *Aims an arm cannon at the dog.* This'll fix'ya! Sam: What the? No, don't shoot him! >< *Completely flips out at Iron Hide.* I know, I know, but I really hate those little "rat-dogs" as my dad calls them. XD Anyways, back to the comments. Really, like ID4? I saw that movie, was pretty good to me. Never saw Armaggedon, but my dad did, and he liked it, so this is all good news to me. And Decepticlone Soundwave, they will talk in the film. They were only mute probably because the VA work is still being finished, and these scenes were the most complete of the ones worked on. So don't worry, at least the Autobots won't be mute, not sure of the Decepticons though... If Bumble Bee speaks in the Prequel Comics, but not in the Film, well, I think you get the idea... Anyways, I just have this one thing to say. Bring on 7/4/7.
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28689) Posted by Immortal Starscream on February 20th, 2007 @ 1:18am CST awesome review, and i cant wait to see these monsters in action,
yes, i still think they look like monsters, but ive been wanting to see them in action nonetheless, and this review solidifies that resolve and blue, i don't think your trolling, and i respect your views and opinions. i agree this is a total change from what my transformers are, but so was beast wars, and when i finally made myself watch it and check out the toys, they were awesome, and most of them had fugly monster bodies and faces. that being said, the only reason anybody is saying these things to you, is that you are very abusive in stating your opinion, your accusations of siebs taking money to give a good review is a prime example. you are totally entitled to your opinion and to voice them, but so is everyone else, and it becomes easy for people to take things personally when it comes to voicing our views. a modicum of tact is a must in these situations.
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28705) Posted by Arcadius-Prime on February 20th, 2007 @ 2:18am CST Why is Bumblebee mute? What's that all about? | |
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28720) Posted by Wolfguard on February 20th, 2007 @ 3:05am CST I've gone back and forth on liking and disliking what I've seen, and whether I'll pay to see it in a theater or wait till it's out on DVD. I'm going to do what I've been doing with everything in my life lately, and that's to have an open mind about something I have not experienced.
I'll be seeing it at the theater. If I don't like it, big deal. In the grand sceme, what's $10 bucks? Just less than a full hour of work, that's all. Seibertron effin' rocks the Kazbah.
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28727) Posted by ShGarland_1383 on February 20th, 2007 @ 3:21am CST If I end up waiting for the DVD, it'll be just like Silent Hill: it would have been too much of a bother to go see it in the theater to be worth it for me, even if it is Transformers.
Really looking forward to this though. By the time 7/4 comes around I should be able to at least try to go see it at the nearest Harkens, because my nephew's gonna be out of school by then and I'm sure his mom's going to take him out to the movies at least once during summer break. Not sure how interested they'd be in the Transformers but I don't think they'd be too put off if I go on my own and see it.
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28778) Posted by chcoppoc on February 20th, 2007 @ 6:41am CST I am glad Seibertron went and gave his objective review. Like most things, I prefer to get the opinion of someone less inclined than to enjoy the movie, and the author of the Transformers 101 article is about as objective as it gets!
I will say that I remember seeing the Beast Wars commercial for the first time on TV, not seeing cars and planes and cassette decks, and REALLY getting a sinking feeling in my gut. My initial knee-jerk response was "Where is OP?" Then I saw the first cartoon, then the second, and I was hooked. It was not G1...not even close. It was not cars and planes and cassette players. Worse, the voices were not even close. But the story was so good and the characters were so unique I was able to get past my initial response to the show. Nothing will ever be like the children of the 80's remember, and as one I can say that is sad in a way. Something about our shows like Transformers, Thundercats, and GI Joe will never be the same again. But this is a new generation of kids that are watching the one thing I loved most as a child...Transformers! Over 20 years and our kids are watching our favorite show. How many other cartoons and toys can claim that same fame besides Barbie and Hot Wheels? I look forward to taking my 4 year old to go see his hero (thanks to the boxed set of G1) - Optimus Prime. See ya there!

Do dogs normally pee on other creatures when they get frightened, angry, or provoked? I thought most dogs either barked, ran away, or attacked their provoker. Reading Blackout's transformation sequence excites me. But reading about the cliched humor depresses me. By the way, were they referring to Shia's haircut when this comparison was made?

Can it. ... Anyways, Seibs, thanks for the review - especially some of the additional details. The 102 comment must have been a relief at the end. Sounds like a lot of things will be different, but a good amount of thought and good effort has been put into the production value. I'm sold anyway, but this certainly makes me feel a little better about inviting lots of people out to see it.

| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28909) Posted by War Hammer on February 20th, 2007 @ 10:11am CST It was a very good review of the preview to be fair. I've seen the clips of Blackouts transformation and I've seen the stills, while the CGI will no doubt be out of this world it still won't help me overcome the failings I see in this film.
Basic ingredients have been changed to a tried and tested methodology regarding the transformers. I didn't know Bumblebee was a mute, which I can see will offer comic relief but it's another silly design change against a character I used to love. I won't go into the same old argument about the head or character redesigns but you all know what I mean. It still hasn't changed my mind I'm afraid and I will be saving my money for something, I'll just download the movie on release. It differs from people to people but in my case this movie has diminished my enjoyment in transformers as a whole. **Before someone tries to flame me or tries to tell me I'm wrong, I'm only expressing my opinion and not comparing mine with someone else's over the movie.**
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28912) Posted by Gaijin on February 20th, 2007 @ 10:16am CST What little I have read of the posts of this site's many members, I have to say that some of you act like people are attacking you personally, when in fact, they are telling what they feel or saw in the movie. Now, I agree that people should be free to express themselves however they should- afterall, I reside in the US, where the Amendment states Freedom of Speech. But, to push others to believe as you do is just not cool.
I personally did not attend the viewing, and I, too, have had reservations. But, since day-one, I have been overall pretty stoked about this movie. I refuse to pass judgment, regardless of how I feel about the Transformers' troublesome designs, until I go see the film in July. In the meantime, from what I have read from Ryan's report as well as the others who attended, I am even moreso excited than before. Thanks to Ryan and the others who attended and gave reviews.

| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28938) Posted by Prowl76 on February 20th, 2007 @ 11:06am CST I can't wait to see this. I've even convinced some friends who aren't really into transformers to go see it with me. | |
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28940) Posted by Autobobby1 on February 20th, 2007 @ 11:22am CST While I do love a good action movie, which this movie will have a lot of, I'm most interested in the scenes like the one at Sam's house. The Autobots trying to blend into the human environments, human-Transformer interaction, and the Transformer's personalities are what I'm most excited about.
This movie will be awesome, and I hate it when people who have only seen robot designs and TEASER trailers disregard it. Only Ryan has seen it, so you can't tell if it sucks. It's only different.
| Re: Seibertron's review of the Transformers Movie sneak peek event (28948) Posted by Optimus Convoy on February 20th, 2007 @ 11:40am CST So, now the main person who spearheaded the hate towards Michael Bay and this movie has changed his mind and approves of it, does that mean everyone else suddenly likes it too?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be an ass, but if Seibertron sees the whole movie before all of us, and changed his mind, I get the feeling everyone would change their minds too.

He hasn't seen the whole movie, just what he told us. Several scenes, that's all. But is BB really a mute?
