For those wondering, this is the only articulated leader class figure for the TAV and Robots in Disguise lines so far, and has clear windows, show accurate painted detail, electronics, and accessories to be used either for him or his team mates (as shown in his awesome commercial).
EDIT: Now with more images showing off the electronics and various pegs and ports!

Oh man, and all those combiners!
The EX Prime as a robot was great. Reminds me of the current TT Shinkansen line. The dragon mode and torso mode Really for the diehard fan if you want to track them.
Why it never made the cut to the domestic market.......mystery for the ages (that or Hasbro wasn't interested). Also noticed that TFGo! combiner teams were very limited. Not even hobbysearch carried it.
Hasbro passed because there wasn't an established price point they could fit into since 2 of the 3 team members were priced differently. This comes from Vangelus at Bot Con a few years ago, he made a point to ask the Hasbro rep.
The Go Prime combiners are OK but I completely soured on them when BBTS wasn't sure they'd be getting the "fixed" version of the Jet bot and combining EX Prime was such a fiddly pain.
So BBTS couldn't guarantee the legs? Well mech surgery can easily fix the issue thank Primus.
Btw, on TAV21, as we can see now closer, there's no way a 3rd party can add a panel to cover the legs up in robot mode without destroying the figure's aesthetic.
Shades of Star Convoy and Godginrai.

How can you ruin the asthetic of giant boxes that don't move? Anyone could come up with flat panels that fold out from inside the legs to fill in the gaps.

The inside of the legs are completely open sir, where the car would sit inside while in trailer mode.

Seems like Hasbro put you up to the challenge, here is their Leader OP for the line (its just a big brick upscale of the 3 step changer):

I you look at these pics, you can see that there is no inner leg panel, you just see the empty trailer half. Kinda like the back of CW Ultra Magnus' legs but on the inner side instead.

Come, on, dude. Two panels that can snap in and out like plugs/covers. It's not that hard to do. As long that the 3P company don't make them pink with spikes going all over the place, the aestetic cant be ruined by something so simple and subtle. Unless OP have empty legs on the cartoon model, that is.

I think he means what you are getting out of this toy in comparison to what Hasbro is putting out for the line (and especially in this size class). However, I see it a bit differently. Hasbro and Takara have very different thoughts regarding these lines. Hasbro sees it as a third line, not targeted to collectors with the exception of the warrior class (they stated as such several times). Takara however, sees the TAV as collector based as any previous toyline to the point of even using it to release previously unreleased molds or new decos of older molds. They have split all the easier toys into the TED line so as not to confuse the two which are targetted at very different age groups. Obviously, as a collector I will gravitate more towards what takara is doing at TAV since they are targetting me. TED is not and neither is Hasbro's Robots in disguise line. I wouldnt say one is superior to the next, just that only one of the three show lines (RID 2015, TAV, TED) is literally for me.

How are you then gonna attach them (the panels) firmly without ruining the aesthetic? Securely I mean. Adding a clip on secureely wouldadd stress marks on the mounting part. Also, adding some unuseable panels when in truck/cargo mode.
And, has anyone attempted to fill up the gaps in Godginrai legs? It also has a gap. Just saying. The gap has a purpose.

you are overthinking how the panels would work. Panels would just snap by the insides. Fisher Price's Construx did it 30-something years ago:
As for Godginrai, I have the figure and he's my favorite G1 TF ever. Yet, I never saw the gaps in the inner legs of the super bot. Why? Because they are very, very small. Plus, his posability only have 2 settings. Legs closed (no gab visible) or appart at 30° (gap hidden in shadows). Also, Ginrai's legs are VERY thick, hiding the gap even more.
You just can't compare to that Leader TAV-21 OP who have very long and thin legs, who can make ninja poses. Plus, the hollowness is much more complete than Ginrai. In Ginrai's gap, the super mode head can barely fit in. In TAV-21's gap, a whole deluxe car can fit. I don't think you can find a TF that can compare to TAV-21 in term of gaping legs, He's unique.

You do have a point with the gap. Must be a holdover from the unused Roller/head module design that was eventually dropped. And yes, the gap in GGR isn't too much of a problem as most of the time we keep his legs stuck together in super mode unless you split them. Then the gap would be noticeable.
TAV-21 is poseable, and like more x 10 poseable which also be a visually irritating if you look at his empty legs. Heck, Jetfire's inner thighs and forearms are distracting enough I grant you that.
So unless them 3rd party makers find it financially viable to release panels (that won't color conflict) and won't cause too much damage when clipping on (btw the official Die-Cast Matrix that can clip on G1 Optimus' chest cavity causes significant wear/paint (for the iPod g1 color version which had fully painted surfaces) wear if used and that's 1st party) and not cost an arm and a leg like CrazyDevy used too, I'm in. B
But still having reservations. Maybe leave good enough alone.
Posted by fenrir72 on July 4th, 2015 @ 10:05pm CDT
Mine would probably be delayed given that a local typhoon is here abouts, delayed enough already from HK though with the same departure stamp while the Japan origin stuff (Adams and UW-010) arrived much faster (go figure).
Asking because, well really. TFYuki displays PG with Superion but UW Superion manual doesn't mention the target master interaction at all.
Though we already knew it for the domestic release but still sort of a waste for TT not to advertise it in the manual.

Heh, you're not alone. Paying the price of a complete figure for just a few bits of plastics always make me pause. I must REALLY like the kit to indulge. I bet to make any kit attractive, they may add a G1esque gun or something. Heck, how about a transformable Roller?
Anyway, as usual, it's wait and see.

Nah, the last one was a Movie Legends Starscream... done in green. Look up "Starscream KeroKero Version" and "KeroKero Ace" magazine, December 2011 issue.
In case you're wondering, "kero-kero" is the sound a frog makes.

I guess? He was alright in prime, not watching rid, but the whole not talking thing, is seriously pissing me off now, he's been a generic mute for 8 years now, talk about an extremely bare-bones mascot, he doesn't even talk. I'm not saying the development of his relationship with raf wasn't poignant, but I think its time we let him go, or as rid did, at least let him talk
But to the point, kinda tired of the regurgitated bb repaints; glad the dark days of rotf and dotm are over when there were multiple bee's in a wave/shelfwarming at the same time

I would like to discuss 2. First, Steeljaw (or Phantom Jaw, the version I got). That is a very complex transformation for a line said to be more simplified. And I like the tail. But the fron of the truck has a problem and I dont know if its just me. The front halfs (the legs) dont peg in properly and one side is really off. Did anybody else have this problem?
As for Drift, oh man, what a great toy. I love how they use flipped panels inorder to use the vehicle kibble as a different pice in robot mode. So it makes for almost full alt mode integration while also having robot mode detail that doesnt show in alt mode (kinda like AOE Hound to a far lesser extent).
I love that panel flip. the hood of the car is still on his chest but it becomes a totally different piece

The Steeljaw mold for some reason makes it difficult for the legs to snap together firmly in alt mode, but it can be done. You have to push them together HARD, but it will happen, and the hood will be nice and flush along the central crease. However, looking at your picture, I wonder if the problem is a misassembly, like using two left joints in the legs instead of a left and right version? I've had that happen a few times with figures, like HFTD Soundwave and Generations 2012 GDO "Dead End." When space for robot kibble is tight, little oversights like using the mirrored part instead of the intended one make a huge difference for tolerances.

Yep. They are. I just confirmed it on mine (just unpacked it tonight along with my UW Superions). I think yours might be defective, unfortunately. Try to fiddle with it a bit more. I kind of got mine to peg together oddly in the front like yours, but was able to get it right again.
On the upside, I'm glad I waited for the TAV VS 03 set for Strongarm. Not only does she look better than the Hasbro version with her improved paint apps, I'm loving the "Big Bad Wolf Cop" version of Steeljaw, er...Phantomjaw, with whom she comes paired. Yeah, I could have gotten the Takara Strongarm months ago, but I couldn't say no to another wolf Transformer.

Congrats on the haul! And yes, it does peg in. But man that was some crazy force I had to apply. I thought I would break it. But yes, it pegs together and stays that way. One side is a bit above the other but not like before and there is no gap. Man, I would have never thought I would have to force it that much.
My main complaint now with the mold is that the head is not on a ball joint. Since his most stable pose is hunched on his tip toes (really cool balancing going on), its too bad he doesnt have a ball joint letting us lift his head up a bit to see his prey.

I couldn't agree more. This is something I have been thinking about lately about a lot of different figures. I don't see why all heads can't be on ball joints. It gives full range of motion. A lot of CW guys could have ball joints and not impede transformation. You think its a cost thing?

I dont know. Technically you aren't using less or more plastic since you get a spherical hole at the bottom of the head and that amount of plastic is instead found on the joint. And for the CW figures, some have it and some dont (I forget now, who doesnt have one?) and I am clueless as to why, it makes it super odd.

Glad you got yours working. And yes, it IS a lot more force to get the hood to snap together than you'd think, but the plastic seems no worse for the wear after several transformations back and forth (e.g., no stress marks). This goes for all three versions of the mold I have so far (Hasbro's Steeljaw, Takara's Steeljaw, and now Phantomjaw). It is too bad the mold doesn't have a ball-jointed neck, indeed. However, you can get him down close to the ground in some cool poses that make it look like he's sniffing out a trail to find his prey.

Maybe it adds a complication to the assembly?william-james88 wrote:Cobotron wrote:william-james88 wrote:My main complaint now with the mold is that the head is not on a ball joint. I couldn't agree more. This is something I have been thinking about lately about a lot of different figures. I don't see why all heads can't be on ball joints. It gives full range of motion. A lot of CW guys could have ball joints and not impede transformation. You think its a cost thing?

What's up with your Drift? Is it a special variant or is the color just off in your pic?
