Oh, btw, Death Cobra will be getting a full page of this book. Robot, helicopter, headshot. I'm a big fan of the incidental characters and there are quite a few in this book.

Glad to be here. And yes, it'll be in black and white, because character models are in black and white. At least, back in the 80s they were. Since the images had to be sent from the art director's office to the animators, it was much easier to courier a couple of sheets of color models and then fax over the more voluminous character models. These days, since it's all digital, most character models exist in color. Were I to tackle something like, say TF Animated, I'd be more inclined to do it in color.

You know ... I'm thinking I'd be a pretty damn happy fan if we'd finally get a G1 Arcee figure for the 25th anniversary (perhaps done in a retro G1 style) or maybe even a Super Megatron from Takara finally. What do you guys say?

Does that scripting feel patronizing to anyone else?

Looks like I'll be picking this up, and looking for volume 1 as well.

And I need a bigger bookshelf.

Alas, softcover, but it is oversized, considerably larger than a standard comic book. If you really would like to see a hardcover, perhaps an omnibus collecting volume 1 & volume 2, write to IDW.

Do you mean the solicitation copy, or the text accompanying the images? Either way, that was not my intention. For the actual book pages, I wanted to inform and tried to adopt a neutral editorial voice. For the solicitation copy, I felt it appropriate to go a bit more sale-sy. I certainly wasn't trying to talk down to anyone, more to talk up the book.

The actual text in the book. The tone feels patronizing to me. I [b:8l4ywv7l]know[/b:8l4ywv7l] all that information already and the book comes off, to me, like someone explaining the Japanese series and characters to other fans in the simplest way possible because, otherwise, they just wouldn't get it. Seriously? I didn't get that at all. As I say above, I adopted a neutral editorial voice. You may know all about Magami Ban and what the individual titles of the Nine Great Demon Generals and Minerva's ethnicity, but I didn't want to assume that everyone would. Certainly, I didn't know all of this before I started doing research for the book.

Remember, this is primarily an art/reference book, not a detailed guide to Japanese continuity. On most pages I had room for about two sentences, and I had to assume that the reader was unfamiliar with the character. Some very basic biographical information and perhaps some trivia was all I had room for. If the info contained is old news to you, at least a good portion of the artwork is new, and the rest should be of higher quality than has been previously published.

I appreciate the feedback, but I'm afraid we're going to have to agree to disagree on this.

I already know all that information too as the big fan of japanese TFs I am (and the fact that those TV series were dubbed and aired here in Spain helps a lot), and I didn't get that feeling either.

(and btw, most americans have never properly learned about these stories and characters so I believe that little text will be highly appreciated)

I know admittedly very little about the Japanese TF series, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the tone of the text at all. It's informative, so it's actually rather helpful for those of us not entirely in the know.

You can't just assume that the entire readership that this book would be exposed to is going to know this stuff. The text helps.

I know bits and pieces of info about the later 3 (technically 4, with Zone) series, so the additional comments are appreciated.

Cant wait for this book, the first one was fantastic, I expect this book to be just as great.

The first one's O.K., although a bit incomplete. Does have some nice turnarounds and alternate/unused models, though.

Alternate/Unused models?

Models which were created for either the show or the comic but were finally not used (i.e. jumpstarters or battlechargers in the cartoon), or got redesigned to make them more/less toy accurate. I absolutely loved the first volume and am SO looking forward to the second!!
