The Legion Class are often viewed as cheapo simplified versions of more complicated and interesting toys. Well, that is exactly what they are! But in my eyes, no less fun then the larger classes.
As a kid my minis (Bummblebee, Windcharger, Gears, etc.) went everywhere with me. In my backpack to school, the grocery store with Mom, the back seat of Dad's Oldsmobile, and off to Grama and Grampa's house we go.

Legions, Legends, and all the smaller classes of past and present have become just as important a part of my collection as the bigger bots. So much so that they have earned their own shelf. Which I have dubbed Micronopolis.

Transformers News: Top 10 Best Legion Class Transformers Toys

This size class has had many names over the last 30 years. When asked to work on this list, WilliamJames made a wise choice in narrowing it down to Legends class, which started in 2005 until 2010 and then changed its name to Legion class. We covered the Scouts/Legends last time and this list differs from that one since it limits it to only molds which are made to represent a smaller scale of larger figures and found in the current Legion Class (which was once called Legends class). It made the job a little less daunting, but also made for a little more diversity, as I may have been tempted to just list all the G2 Gobots and their Car Robots/R.I.D. repaints.

Whether populating your pocket, or your Trypticons and Metroplexs, they may be small in stature, but these guys are BIG on fun!
Let's dig in.

10. Transformers Reveal the Shield Legends Class Optimus Prime
Dare I say, this Prime's transformation is the original toys done a little better? For such a little toy he has great detailing and his proportions are more fitting to what we've come to expect from our favorite fearless leader. It was a nice touch to include that ankle tilted stance with out any articulation, and it doesn't hinder the transformation at all. It is also always a nice thing whenever a Prime toy's truck windshield becomes his actual robot chest, and on such a small scale too. He has great arm articulation. Could he have used some knees? Sure! But, we're talking about Legends here.

9. Transformers Cybertron Legends Class Hot Shot
The thing I love about all the Cybertron Legends, is that the larger toys had such nicely simplified transformations, that they even translate well when shrunk down to pocket size. Hot Shot may not be the most articulated figure but he is a fantastic representation of his larger self. They even included his Cyber Key gimmick of flip up wings/spoiler. Of course without the key.

8. Transformers: Robots In disguise Legion Class Strongarm
Let's give the new guys a shout! Strongarm has quickly become one of my new favorite characters. Her Legion toy does a few things better than her warrior toy. Most notable, you can see her hands. This is achieved by deviating a tad from her show appearance, but she makes up for that with elbows and knees! She has a nice little color layout for such a petite thing. She sports a great sculpt and enough detail to take nothing away from this fantastic new character, and toughest little rookie on the force.

7. Transformers Cybertron Legends Class Vector Prime
Because I'll take my favorite dimension hopping Cybertronian mystic knight in any size! He's cast in a nice metallic swirl white, and his color layout is just enough to keep him interesting. Again the transformation is just a micron version of his great Voyager toy. What I like best is that, even when scaled down, he retains all the sculpted clockwork detailing that makes this character so cool to look at. Especially in his alt mode.

6. Robots In Disguise Legion Class Thunderhoof
Another new comer that has really captured my imagination lately and seems to have become a fan favorite out of the R.I.D. Decepticons is Thunderhoof. The longer this lil buck hangs out on my desk the more I come to enjoy him. He has really prodded me to rethink this list a bit. His transformation is ultra simple, but really gets the point across with a great little alt mode. But, robot mode is where he really shines. Although his elbows are fixed in a 90 degree bend, it barely hinders the pose-ability and expressiveness you can get out of him. You don't often see head swivel on a Legions toy, but when you cock his head just a little off center it really adds some 'tude to this dude. He also has a fantastic paint job with just enough in the right places, that he may even out shine his Warrior class counter part in this department.

5. Transformers Cyberverse Legion Class Evac
I'm not a huge fan of the Movie aesthetic, but I am a huge fan of a fun toy. I love it when a Movie era toy catches my fancy. Evac is a great example where a Movie design can be unique but still hit all the classical design marks. Hood chest, shoulder wheels, silver face, but in a really neat futuristic Cybertronian look. He has a great intuitive transformation and some decent articulation for his class. It also helps that his alt mode looks like my Honda Fit... if it were from outer space... and had a turbine propulsion system... and guns.

4. Transformers Generations (or GDO) Legends Class Bluestreak
I'm usually pretty loud about my affection for the Datsun Brothers, so darn tootin' one is going to end up on my list. I had originally put Prowl in this spot, but after a trip to this year's BotCon, I was finally able to land a Bluestreak, whom I had been chasing for a good while now. This Legends toy does a great job of capturing the visual cues of the OG toy in a nicely updated design. The engineering also pulls a lot of good things from the transformations of previous Datsun toys. Ending up with a nice little design that's a hoot to play with. What makes this version of the mold even more special, is that he was retooled with gripping hands, in which he can hold the awesomely G1 styled blaster that was added to the figure. It's too bad Smokescreen didn't get this mold to complete the trio. I'm looking at you Hasbro! (wink, wink)

3. Transformers Prime Cyberverse Legion Class Wheeljack
Where to start? One of the best articulated Legions toys on the planet. An absolute joy to pose. Especially wielding those Energon Scimitars! He has a nice detailed deco, and who doesn't love that alt mode? His transformation is fun, with his legs almost more G1 Jack than Prime. With those big wide feet he is one of the most stable and versatile Legion size action figures out there.

2. Transformers Reveal the Shield Legends Class Megatron
The best updated G1 gun Megatron we've ever gotten? A lofty claim, but he is an amazing toy. He has a transformation that is completely unique to him alone. Again aesthetically, a fresh update to the classic look, with a great head sculpt and a menacing little maw. He can hold some impressive poses with his great leg articulation. The gun barrel folding down is a neat solution to the arm cannon. The safety orange is a tad off putting, but laws is laws. William-James would have my head if I didn't mention the fact that this Megatron can be wielded by the MP-11 Seeker mold. A pretty great bit of fore site in design, but on my shelves you're more apt find him in the grip of Armada Unicron!
This toy was made to rule from atop a G1 Trypticon, and with an iron fist no less.

1. Transformers Prime: Cyberverse Cliffjumper/Tailgate

I think many Legion/Legends aficionados would agree that this mold takes the cake. A bitchin' muscle car alt mode, a mind blowing transformation, and the best articulated robot mode there is in this size class. The way the arms fold up into the hood, using the arms points of articulation is a stroke of micro-engineering genius. Then there are the feet. Not only do they have forward and back rocking motion, but the have ANKLE TILT! If this figure had hip and head swivel the world of Transformers might just implode on itself. He comes with my personal favorite Cyberverse energon weapon, and looks absolutely bad ass wielding that sword in front of those viking horns. This figure should be the measuring stick for all Legions to come.

Transformers News: Top 10 Best Legion Class Transformers Toys

As great as the Cliff version is, I personally prefer the Tailgate repaint a little more. The flames just give him a little extra heat. The fact that those flames end up as his tribal forearm tats is too cool.

I never liked the collect them. Not that I had anything against them per, but I used to prefer spending the money on the larger figures I really wanted. Buying metroplex changed my mind a bit as well as generations releases of figures not being available in other classes...

here's my personal top 10 list in descending order -

Rewind Titan Master Legend - he has a good looking robot mode...
Optimus Prime Legion
Bumblebee Legion
Cosmos (would be higher but his head gets stuck)
Cliff jumper Legends
Wheelie (suffers from qa issues but he's pretty awesome)
Powerglide (awesome robot mode especially but again like wheelie, he suffers from tabs not working in alt mode)
Bombshell Legends
Skywarp Legends(tho he skipped leg day)
Shrapnell Legends

WHAT? How could you forget Airachnid? The Legion Class of her is precisely 1 MILLION times a better figure than the deluxe. That's got to count for something, right? At least an honorable mention.

Frogbat - I love your list! But let's straighten something out before we get too deep. Legends is a confusing term now. Before the name was assigned to it's current class size, it was the name given to what we now know as Legions.
Your list is great and I love all the toys on it, but most are of a different size class. Just wanted to clear that up. ;)^

I assume we're not counting Cyberverse Commanders?

My list... is kinda hard. Especially since they come in groups.

Image
LOVE the Dreads, especially with their loose 'team uniform' -- not too restrictive yet nicely ties them together (despite how two are police cars and the other's a friggin' fighter jet).
... although Hatchet's a Commander and Crankcase is just OK individually.

Image
The Prime Terrorcons are my #2 fave. A little hoard of dragon monsters, NONE of which were the stereotypical western dragon that plagued the main Beast Hunters line! They also have the bonus ability to combine into Abominus -- not super amazing but an extra play feature is always nice (plus it's not like it hampered the individual figures any)

It's too bad the repaints were all exclusives somewhere. I'd have LOVED a second team, but alas.

Image
Devastator! He's what really got me into the size class. Understandably he's rather crude compared to later Legions, but he's made up of seven different figures (including the delightfully freaky but often ignored Hightower and Overload). Can't complain there.
Also, with the semi-universal connectors, you could do this:
Image
Image
The stand-alone Constructicons were pretty fun, too. Even if they have trouble standing alone...

One Legend that doesn't need a posse:
Image
RotF Soundwave. I believe he's the only one with a ball-jointed neck. Also got ball joints in his arms and legs, and hinged elbows, so he's quite pose-able. On top of that, his robot mode is simply imposing as hell (he's got a cape of solar arrays!). His alt mode suffers a bit, but it's a satellite, which are already fairly abstract.

I'm not sure if that's too many or too few...
Honorable mentions would have to go to Barricade, Ravage, and RotF Springer.

Strongarm is the only one on the list I own but she's great. Good articulation, cool little vehicle mode and a nice robot mode. I just wish she came with a weapon- I've got her with Divebomb's pistols at the moment but she needs something a bit more police-ish IMO.

The Legion Terrorcons are all great (except for Twinstrike/Sinnertwin with his self-destructive thigh tansformation). Hun-Grr is a characterful little beast with an awesome twin-headed dragon mode (I've also seen a superb custom of him into Gigatron) and Blot/Blight is fun as well, with a legitimately cool transformation and a really awesome troll mode. My favourites however are Cutthroat/Windrazor and Rippersnapper. Cutthroat is a really dynamic little figure- the gargoyle mode is very characterful, and the surprisingly articulated robot mode looks great. The toy actually looks oddly feminine with its wide hips and coquettish face- I'm toying with whether to have it as an actual fembot or an effeminate male/robot drag queen/Frank N. Furter (personality wise being somewhat like Knock Out except far more camp and far more sadistic). Rippersnapper meanwhile is just cool. Wibbly wobbly neck aside his robot mode is great, with a good body shape and great sculpting, and his beast mode is just awesome (in spite of the fact I can never work out how it's supposed to be transformed). It reminds me of a cross between a velociraptor and a piranha, and all in all works a LOT better than the "awkward upright landshark" mode of the G1 toy (Overbite did the landshark thing much better IMO). In fact I'd quite happily buy loads of Rippersnappers in lots of different colours- I do own the black Grimlock version but I'd love the Cindersaur redeco, and if they did him in Skalor or Overbite colours I'd buy 'em in a heartbeat.

The combined mode is a brick but I like him. His big ol' creepy claws and spiky shoulders are awesome.

As for others I don't own but kinda like, Cosmos is cool even if he is outstripped immensely by the Commander-sized version (which I must buy at some point). The Legion Seeker mold, whilst not very poseable (knees but no hips...weird) LOOKS superb, with a very striking silhouette and a great jet mode- I for one would have selected him over Optimus Prime as number 10. One I'm actually tempted to buy is Legion Bumblebee- the Legends 'Bee is cool but he's almost as big as the Optimus Prime figure, and in a Legends display that just won't do. Warpath is a really cool looking little figure, with a surprisingly cool tank mode.

I don't know if they count but I'd like to give the RID Minicons a mention. They're oddly fun for how simplistic they are- my favourite being Ratbat.

And finally, one who obviously won't make any lists due to being an unofficial offering, but who deserves mentioning due to how good she is is Iron Factory's Windblade/Miko. She's cute as a button, super poseable and a really fun toy in general. My single gripe with her is her slightly iffy paint QC, but given I got her for £15 (only 50% more than a standard Legends release in this country) I can accept it.

As others have mentioned the Beast Hunters Terrorcons are great. I don't have many Legion/Legends figures but they are some cool figures for being so small. Cutthroat, Hun-Grr, and Blot are my favorites of the six.

I don't own a single figure on this list and what few Legions/Legends I do own wouldn't make for a very good list. I will say that most of the G1 Mini Vehicles remakes are really nice, especially Cosmos and Beachcomber. If we're including Cyberverse Commanders then Hatchet and Powerglide would definitely top my list. I'm also a big fan of the Terrorcons, they're a lot of fun to mess around with and there are a few things you can do to make the arms look better.

Delta Magnus wrote:The Legion Terrorcons are all great (except for Twinstrike/Sinnertwin with his self-destructive thigh tansformation).

I have three versions of this mold and none of them have given me trouble transforming. Is the issue really that wide spread? He's easily one of my favorite figures in the group, right under Windrazor at the top.

I like all the Terrorcon love. They are a great and fun set.

You know what? Twinstrike was on the list but just got nudged out by Thunderhoof. Mine does have the exploding joint issue, but despite that, I love his sculpt and is also easily my fav of the group.

Hm, I've seen that Cliffjumper in the stores a lot before. Always passed it up because I didn't like the way the head looked. Now I wish I'd grabbed one! Oh well. The only one of these that I own is Hot Shot, and he's alright. I would have put movie Scorponok in before Hot Shot, but that's just me. :P

I really want to get that Strong Arm! But in Canada the new legends are SO overpriced!

I personally would have liked to see the TF:P Terrorcons in here too, because they're one of my favorite new iterations of a combiner team. I would have also put TF:P Insecticon in this list as well, but I'm bias to insect transformers! :PREDACON:

Great list! But would you mind copy and pasting it here viewtopic.php?t=107309&p=1804173#p1804173

Thats the list it would belong on more since your list is primarily about the more recent Legends class, which is about smaller figures that we cant find in larger classes (like deluxes or voyagers). The Legends we are talking about here is the toyline/class that started in 2005: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legends_(Transformers)

Oh we have many lists with that Insecticon coming up, you are talking about Hardshell right? Love that guy. But he's a Cyberverse Commander and those usually have more articulation, complexity and detail than the Legions class so they will be in their own list. There is easily enough amazing ones for a top 5 of their own ;)

And Walmart had the legions for 5$. You can always get a price check at TRU Canada.

Your link just sends me to the generations line, that doesnt really help. Can you just show me an image? Because I have a feeling we are talking about 2 different things. The Legends class being discussed is the one that predeced the legion class: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legends_(Transformers)

This list is only about the Legion class, those really small ones, but the thing is that it used to be called Legends class from 2005 to 2010.

The article is very specific, did you read it? And as I said the legends class you are describing were in the last list from two weeks ago.

Also the whole point is to compare toys of a common size class, those seekers of yours are not legion scale.

but you said legions/legends so.... legends class are included, if not dont include legends class
the whole point is you chose one of the most mediocre molds of that size for no 1 i do agree with the other choices on the list some should be no 1 more than cliffjumper, its like you just threw it in there because of no reason

I didnt write this list, Cobotron did. You would know that if you read it. I just want to be clear with you in case others have the same questions.

We both agree that there are 2 different clases called Legends, great. Thats why we wrote 2 different lists. Here is the other one (which I wrote this time), why dont you go take a look:

http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/ ... oys/35809/

Not everything called legends automatically works, or else we would write about these too:

http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Transformers_Legends_(franchise)

Cobotron's article was precise, all people have to do is read it.

Knowing this distinction, please let us know what your favourite toys that are legion class (or legends class 2005-2010) and who you would pick as number 1 instead of CliffJumper. Or you could go comment on the other list.

Anyone else is welcome to join in on the dicussion of this specific scale as well.

then maybe say the list is for the smaller legends only, from a specific time frame which was not really explained, if 2005-2010 then prime would be kind of outside that
and there are dozens of other toys that would replace cliffjumper for no 1, too many to list but if you want to go from same toyline i would say legion smokescreen for starters or air vehicons but cliffjumper shouldn't be on there any where

I could never get past Cliffjumpers "horns." They've been neutered to the point of ridiculousness.

Though the transformation looks to be way more involved than I thought.

Plus one. Universe/Classics Jazz. This was the best upgraded G1 Jazz before RTS deluxe one.

This could be my favorite list so far cause I love this size class, one reason could be my budget lol 8-}. There are so many I love I don't think I can bring my list down to just ten. I love everyone that was on the list, even though I expected to see Fixit :RID-BOTS: from RID.
Another one I have always liked was Universe Hound :BOT:, oh and Beachcomber :BOT:, like I said there are just so many that I love.

Thanks Mike! But hey, I'd love to see your list, even if it's 20 deep. You know I don't have some of those great Uni/RTS guys like Hound, Beachcomber, or Warpath. I felt like I couldn't really speak for them without actually handling them. I look forward to acquiring them some day.

I knew the minute I started writing this list, the exclusion of Fixit would be a thing. Here's my stance. I love him. Think he's great. But, there's two things.
1. He serves a different purpose than most Legion/Legend figures. Most L/L toys are meant to just be smaller versions of larger toys. Where as Legion Fixit is more meant to compliment the Warrior Class toys by scaling perfectly with them. The character should be that size.
2. And a minor two at that. His alt mode feels like an after thought to me. A technicality. I've only seen season 1 so far, and for the life of me can't remember seeing him in his alt mode.
But again, I think for the purpose of being the small R2-3PO character that he's supposed to be, he nails it!

So you know, he doesn't have an alt mode on the show.

Sorry for the late reply.
You made some very good points about Fixit :MINI: , and I can understand why he didn't make the cut.
As for my favorites, like I mentioned Hound :BOT: and Beachcomber :BOT: . Others that I can think of would be the RTS Megatron :CON: , Universe Wheelie :BOT: , Universe Warpath :BOT: (like you mentioned). I am sure I could go on and on since I love this size class, but those are the ones on the top of my head right now.

There are a lot of great figures in this class taking into account the limitations of the class (less articulation, etc)

The ones on the list I'm familiar with are great, but there's one guy missing I would have put on there. Prime Smokescreen. Guy's a better representation of the show model than the too flat, fake parts chest deluxe "Beast Hunters" version, IMO.

I like the Blue one especially - it's just a shame they never got around to making the Blue colouring on the Deluxe mould or a non-spikey black bumblebee. Perhaps something for a future platinum release.

Ultra Markus wrote: (clip)...There are dozens of other toys that would replace cliffjumper for No. 1, too many to list but if you want to go from same toyline I would say Legion Smokescreen for starters or Air Vehicons but Cliffjumper shouldn't be on there any where

I think they included Cliffjumper simply because of his unusually high Articulation. If you think of the toys as pocket size fun then the joints he has stand out somewhat.

Personally - I find the ones I keep coming back to time & again are Trailcutter (Trailbreaker) and Hound.

It's likely worth mentioning the sheer Number of Bumblebee's made in this scale too - let me put it this way I have a space for my Movie legions a space for the Universe ones and then another space for just Bumblebees.

I rather like the Transformers Prime Black Bumblebee 'Legion' too (the non-spikey one).

The more recent (Cyberverse Commander size) 'Legends' Like Wreck-Gar, Optimus Prime, Megatron (tank), or Starscream work really well with the smaller car ones too when they represent a larger character with a smaller Character like say Jazz or Hound with the smaller toy and Optimus with the bigger sized one.

Cobotron wrote:Wow! I didn't think this would be so confusing.

Hopefully people usually know what you mean when you say "Legion Size" even if you mean (old 2007 Legends class) so long as they don't decide to be pedantic about it.

But Transformers "are" confusing - I'm still not sure if the small Partner Figures that came with the likes of Tailgate or Swerve are (a new kind of) Targetmasters, Micromaster Triple-Changers or even 'Minicons' / Arms Microns.

Prime Wheeljack is great in any version (or size) I've seen, but that's the "special" version packed in with his spaceship. The single pack version of the figure had "Marlboor" type deco (with amazingly no controversy I'm aware of).

You are correct O. Sups!
I love that they paid that homage to the old Diaclone in such a new toy. I think they skirted any trouble by keeping that deco super vague.

still wish I had doubled down and gotten that single packed version. :(

I'd go with Decepticon Rumble, Laserbeak, and Ravage. I would've gone with the three Autobot Legends class triple changers if I would've seen them in the store before I saw Decepticon Rumble.

Those are the Scout/Legends class, they belong in another thread, this is for the older Legends/Legion class.

Though if this went for the even older spychanger class, Scourge (RiD) would have a lock on it.
